Mak, lol I had my Dad sat with me when that VAR took place; was putting it in Cricket terms to explain it to him like DRS π He then thought when Jota scored again, that was going to be disallowed π

31st October 2020 at 8:24 pm #169459In the words of Graeme Souness “Salah threw himself to the ground in an unnatural way and it was a harsh penalty and I’m a Liverpool fan.”
But Salah not the only one and they are always more likely to be given than not given and there was contact.
It always felt like Liverpool would just about take the points but they are a long way away from where they were after 7 games last season obviously Van Dijk is a big miss but they weren’t there even before the Van Dijk injury.
Liverpool have great attacking quality though which will always help and on the plus side today Nat Phillips had a good game and he should probably play v City.
The odds at the bookies may say City are the favourites but that means nothing although currently City are looking very settled defensively which they weren’t last season but look a bit short up front a fully fit Aguero if he can stay fully fit will fix that.
From a Liverpool perspective Jota looks to have been an inspired signing and it may come down to whether Liverpool can do it without Van Dijk and whether someone like Phillips can plug the gap or whether they need to buy a Centre Back in January.
Overall I still think the title is between City and Liverpool right now City are looking more together, whatever happens I expect the race for the title to be a lot closer and you can’t rule out one of the outsiders coming into it either maybe more than one.
But 7 games is far too early to make any real conclusions.
Big game next weekend though.

31st October 2020 at 10:48 pm #169464AnonymousExcellent post Nine. With regards to Liverpool there’s a lot to feel worried about and a lot to feel confident about. I’m really stuck in the middle here because, as you say Liverpool are not what they were last season but as I touched on before, they tend to take a while to really start putting teams away. It’s easy to forget all the marginal wins and that seems to be Klopp’s specialty, when things arent going perfectly.
The bookies can have City as favourites and that’s all fine, I definitely don’t want to be playing them right now. I won’t rule us out of a win but I’m also kinda bracing myself, because everyone who watches us knows that we can be got at. On the other hand though, we will be utterly devastating with Mane, Jota and Salah. Van Dijk is an absolutely HUGE loss but Gomez and Trent were poor for a good few games already also,so it’s not just that. We seem to be improving defensively but City has come too soon, we’ve got to out gun them, whilst holding them off to a good extent. No easy task but when Klopp realises that he’s got to start Jota with the other 2, it’ll be very very hard to live with us then, especially since Thiago will be bombing the crap out of back lines.
I am absolutely over the moon about the 2 signings we made. I can already see that it gives us a much sharper edge but that defence has got to get it together if we want to defend the title. Alisson is back, Thiago is back very soon (on time for City? no idea, I hope tho with a few mins against Atalanta please).
Special mention to Robertson who was immense at times today. he’s the one player from our back 5 who’s started this season like he was still trying to win the PL last season. The club have got to give him more money and a longer contract. I think i remember that he was actually only getting something like 40 or 50k a week. if thats actually true, it’s absolutely criminal.
It’s bad enough that Wijnaldum wants to leave, if Robertson did, I’d lose my mind.
But ya, on the whole I still see Liverpool as favourites. When the going gets tough, we’ll shift up a few gears… I just hope we’re able to do it during the City match, or we may be in for a humiliating defeat.

1st November 2020 at 9:12 am #169468We are conceding To many goals so city favourites for me
They are keeping cleans sheets. You donβt concede goals like we do and win the league
We are not playing well but we are top. We will get better. We are missing big players at different times all season
Massive game next week and we need Matip abd Thiago fit and ready to start

1st November 2020 at 9:16 am #169469Jota is perfect for us. Iβve always liked Shaqiri and he can make a difference from the bench
Two great passes in our last two games.
Mak, totally agree about Robertson. Heβs the best left bsck in the world in my opinion
The deal of the century so consistent

1st November 2020 at 9:31 am #169470Sean, it’s hugely encouraging despite our current situation what we were able to unearth yesterday.
Williams slightly reminds me of John Scales. If he gets more games, we have another regular center back.
Shaqs and Jota look great together as link up players bring in different patterns of play.
When things are a little one dimensional, we can now bring something different on the table.

1st November 2020 at 10:31 am #169472Good post Nine.. Mak…I told you Jota would be a good signing for you, he fits the Liverpool mould to me. As to titles, way to early to say who and it may even be somebody else!!!! Liverpool are going to go through what City went through without Laporte last season, the difference, to date, is you are picking up points, we dropped them. Although we have tightened at the back we are lacking up front but I do not for one minute this will be a boring game, it will be well worth watching Without Augerro/Jesus not sure where goals coming from apart from howitzers from Rodri/KDB

1st November 2020 at 11:00 am #169477Laporte is an exceptional defender Brian. He will make a huge difference to city this season
Can only see a city win next week to be honest as we are conceding so many soft goals. We are missing something tvis season but we are still grinding out wins

1st November 2020 at 11:29 am #169479Having Watched MOTD the Salah incident was never a penalty for me, no blame towards Salah, but weβre moving towards a non contact game, a slight touch on the bottom of his foot and he throws himself to the ground and rolls around holding his ankle, the ref again can only give what he sees and give a penalty, then VAR steps in, thatβs when it goes wrong, the call from VAR should have been, minimal contact, not enough to go down, go and have a look at the monitor.
As I say weβre now moving towards a non contact sport, If we keep rewarding exaggeration in the game then the players will keep pushing the boundaries. Once again no slight on Salah or the ref, just a general moan on the direction the game is going in…..Pagan

1st November 2020 at 2:01 pm #169484Villa getting 2 late late goals. Just shows even being 4 nil up, there’s no foregone conclusion. Football without fans is like ping-pong. Well Done Saints above all though in holding on and it’s their day today.

1st November 2020 at 2:22 pm #169485AnonymousSean, we definitely concede too many goals currently, to win the league, I’m not arguing that point. In time I think we’ll shore it up though, even without Van Dijk. To win the PL, you need a good defence. If anyone has learned that over the past few seasons, it’s us. Of course we’ll need luck with regards Alisson though and if we can stop picking up injuries in general that’d be great.
A late flurry in the Villa V Southampton game. They made their comeback way too late though but I am reading that Ings was taken out by a knee injury… I’m just hoping that it’s not a re-occurrence. He has had enough serious injuries for one career.
Brian, I was hopeful of him fitting in but didn’t expect him to be able to get much of a chance. To then take it with both hands like this… As for where the title will go, were we not the 2 who have fought most over it in very recent years then it definitely would be too early to talk about it and even then, you’ve got a point. Our defensive problems started before Van Dijk was injured and as things stand, no team has conceded more than Liverpool, which is absolutely crazy for this side but as you say, so far we’re mostly getting the results. It won’t last without improvement though but I’m happy to take the points as we gather ourselves. Getting going without Van Dijk will be extremely hard for sure and playing City without their strikers might sound appealing but you’ll always have goals in you. There are a lot of positives to look at here for me , so Im gonna do that and hope we can nick the points against City. The defence will not be fixed this week, nor next, It’s gonna take time.
As for something else altogether, I see Hazard scored his 1 goal in over a year (he actually scored 2 in this game). I hadn’t been following his situation, was he an absolute disaster at Real or did he get a huge injury or what?

1st November 2020 at 2:46 pm #169487Pagan, it just demonstrates the complete lack of any leadership and accountability with regards to VAR. None of the officials dare to speak up because they all just bow down to the groupthink and fear speaking out. Thing is – it would only take a few referees to stand up to this nonsense and not give such penalties and it would change things. We need the better and more senior referees to start standing up and taking authority over it. The fans also need to get together and pressure such things, much like youβd do to pressure your local MP. The fans should really have more representation over these matters – they support and pay for most of it!
