I’m not sure if the cancellation of the cl first game worked in our favour as tuesdays defeat to Leicester broke utds momentum
Maybe the last week of 4 games in 8 days caught up with you guys. We played well but still so shakey at the back
Thiago looks much better last 5/6 games now he is fully fit

14th May 2021 at 8:30 am #179122In a season pretty much devoid of any fun for me and my team, and my fellow Liverpool fans, last night was refreshing to say the least!
But if I hear one more time how much United missed Maguire…! So they had their 2nd and 3rd choices starting. Liverpool had their 5th choice and at times this season 8th choice starting. Try being without Maguire, Lindelof and Bailly since October.

Worse still, try being with them!

14th May 2021 at 9:12 am #179124On Maguire though, it’s certainly not an excuse. Utd should have had more than enough to deal with a Liverpool side who are a shadow of the side they were last season, something which was apparent even before the CBs started dropping away. We simply weren’t at the races yesterday. No excuses.

14th May 2021 at 1:01 pm #179131I don’t think it says much about the standard of the league that if we win our game in hand we’re just 7 points off Man Utd in 2nd, which I think is basically the point Keane was making last night with regards to Utd. But I would say what is skewing the table in terms of City being dominant is mainly down to Guardiola. Yes of course he has greater squad depth, but at the halfway stage City looked as average as everybody else and no team could pull away. And then he found a system that did make his team take off and the rest is history. That’s generally the story of this season. It’s Guardiola vs the rest as opposed to City vs the rest. He’s a very robust manager and has many strings to his bow.

and yet here we are with 3 out of the 4 finalists in European competition. Utd have fallen away as of late, particularly once we landed in that nowhere land of not really being able to win the league but not really being in danger of losing our top 4 spot. I’m not reading a great deal into these last 2 defeats for Utd at all. One of which where we fielded almost an entire new side. That’s not to say I think we’ll challenge next season but there’s no getting away from the fact that Utd have moved on this season and have been the best of the rest after City.

14th May 2021 at 2:07 pm #179134But Europe is weak too Ed. Barca & Real are shadows of their former selves. PSG as we saw aren’t really all that. The Italian league has been weak for some time. And that leaves Bayern, who have been quite good recently, but I don’t know if you could put them up there with the great Bayern teams of years gone by. I just think so much comes from the manager now. Yes Solksjaer has made Utd quite effective this year. And ditto Tuchel since he came in at Chelsea. But I don’t think either side is extraordinary. With regards to Klopp, I don’t think he is a particularly robust manager but because he is so charismatic he is able to instil a strong mentality in his teams to drive results. But in purely football terms I think he’s been found wanting at times this season. Guardiola is strong across the board but won’t perhaps get the full recognition because of the money spent.

14th May 2021 at 2:19 pm #179135Yeah I don’t disagree with that Mikus. There seems to be a real decline in quality across all the big leagues. I don’t think Utd are outstanding in any sense. I’ve been saying for a long time I don’t think Ole will win anything of note with Utd and is not really good enough to take us to where we need to be. Whenever he does go, though, I think he’ll be leaving us in the best shape any post-Ferguson manager has left us.
With that said, when you look at the declines at Arsenal, Spurs and the like, all of a sudden, Utd’s slow progression looks like it shouldn’t be understated. Utd were never going to win the league this season. Second is a huge step forward, irrespective of Liverpool’s own decline.
I don’t think anyone will be able to catch Guardiola’s City next season either. Wouldn’t at all be surprised to see Chelsea winning the Champions League this month but I remain unconvinced that this Chelsea side are capable of a sustained title challenge. They’re still very much riding on the new manager bounce.

14th May 2021 at 2:33 pm #179136Yeh Ed, my post wasn’t so much an attack on Ole. He has done the absolute best he can. My post is more lamenting the lack of managerial quality & poor board strategies across Europe.

14th May 2021 at 5:36 pm #179148Lack of quality managers in football.
There’s a closed shop of managers that just go from top job to top job, which really limits the chances of a new kid on the block, on top of this there’s the “if you haven’t played eat the top you can’t manage at the top” attitude, and the fact that players don’t want to learn their new trade at the bottom.
Maybe clubs should loan out their ex players that they think have managerial potential to other clubs to do a sort of apprenticeship, with the parent club footing the wages. Look to get coaches in from other sports, see what they can bring to the table.
Management is not just about knowing the game, it’s about leadership and charisma…..Pagan

14th May 2021 at 7:55 pm #179156This is where Ole for me is a bit distasteful and seems to me he’s been in the ‘company’ of a certain well-known figurehead;
“let them off the hook”.
Why can’t he just Congratulate and just put it down to Liverpool being the overall better team on the Night? A Leicester Fan on Talksport phoning up for a call of this ilk when Leicester won. Ole shows no Grace when he’s lost.

14th May 2021 at 8:33 pm #179159Pagan, I think many players are more financially astute now and have advisers on what assets to acquire to cement and build their wealth. Add to that there are other lucrative options when footballers retire. Why sit in the dugout and put yourself under big pressure, potentially harming your reputation, when you can still earn big buckets being a pundit? I think Carragher has said he changed his mind on management when he saw what the job did to Houllier & Benitez, which left them bitter and paranoid.

14th May 2021 at 8:40 pm #179160Manchester United were without Maguire last night, and that was a big miss for them, a little known fact was that apparently though Liverpool were missing VvD and have been for most of the season, no one has mentioned that though😂😂😂😂😂…….Pagan

15th May 2021 at 7:35 am #179166Nil, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone on here find a serious injury to a player amusing, what is amusing though is Liverpool fans moaning about fans from other clubs using injuries as an excuse for losing games, I mean they’ve never mentioned they’ve had any injured players this season…….Pagan
