As far as I understand it, the 50+1 does not mean that the supporters have to invest 50% of the value of the club, as obviously that could never happen. But what it means is that supporters have a casting vote for want of a better phrase in the meaningful decisions that a club makes, at least those decisions that affect the supporter e.g price hikes, sponsorships. They don’t have a say in team matters, purchases or selections. They are more like custodians of the club, which is exactly what they should be, and that would prevent people like the Glazers building up these massive debts in their club. I don’t pretend to understand exactly how it works, but I promise you, it wouldn’t involve Man Utd fans having to find £2bn!!

3rd May 2021 at 3:58 pm #178567Ed, Chelsea were there under Bates, the club owed millions under him, but he managed to keep the wolves from the door, and despite the huge debts growing turned Chelsea’s fortunes around, and then made his money by selling to a very rich buyer.
All the Manchester United fans seem to want is all the money they make to be invested in the club so that even within the FFP restrictions they become financially the most dominant club in the land if not world, which isn’t a million miles away from what the ESL was all about.
To be able to buy a top football club now you need to be a very rich and successful business person, and successful and rich business people didn’t get where they are by giving money away……Pagan

3rd May 2021 at 4:01 pm #178568Ed, to be fair I’ve said all along the United fans have every right to protest against the owners providing it’s peaceful, how beneficial it might be though is open to conjecture and it wasn’t my intention to lump the protestors all in to one that’s why I said in my opening paragraph “Putting aside the rights and wrongs of yesterday and there was a bit of both”
I don’t know how true this claim is but I read a report that there was a claim yesterday from one of the lead protesters that United won’t get to play another PL game at OT this season assuming that’s true that’s why I said “and they are not going to help the Club or themselves if they continue with days like yesterday again.” peaceful or not.
The rest is of course all conjecture but the Glazers have been unmoved now for 16 years despite all of the protests. I guess only time will tell.

3rd May 2021 at 4:06 pm #178569If you think this is solely about player investment or wanting to be the top dog Pagan, you’ve missed the point. I, for one, don’t want my club to be the club who spends the most money. On the contrary, there is so much more prestige to finding success through lesser spending than your rivals. I would much sooner see Greenwood and Rashford banging in the goals than buying someone for £100million.
The fact that the Glazers have taken so much money out of the club is the issue, not the fact that they haven’t spent enough on players. A club’s ability to compete is so much more than what it spends on players. It’s about the stadium, the training ground, the youth teams, the women’s team. All these areas have been allowed to decline under their ownership.
Again, would you want the Glazers at Chelsea?

3rd May 2021 at 4:25 pm #178572Ed, the Ladies team!!! Don’t make me laugh, they currently sit second in the WSL and didn’t exist 4 seasons ago, they didn’t have any players when they were accepted into WSL2 and then went out and bought the whole team which included international players.
Would I want the Glazers? Not in place of Roman, but he is an exception. Are the Glazers better than what Chelsea had in the 70s yes, are they better than Bates, probably.
If you had to name the top 4 clubs who have the “bought there success” label, then you’d probably go for Real Madrid, Chelsea, Man City, PSG. Who coincidentally are all in the CL semifinals.
Sport is all about being top dog, yes we’d all like to see homegrown talents playing and winning titles, but would you’d sooner spend the money and win things than have local lads playing mid table footy?…..Pagan

3rd May 2021 at 4:30 pm #178573“would you want the Glazers at Chelsea?” Ha, ha good point Ed.😊
As is the neglect of OT and the training ground but when the money the Glazers have taken out of the Club comes up with a quite a few United fans often so does that the money going out reduces United’s ability in the transfer market.
The problem United fans have is that United have become just too big and too valuable and at £4 billion it would seem if the Glazers can eventually be convinced to sell it’s likely to be to a consortium or a very rich Sovereign wealth nation.
MUST’s 4 requirements to the Glazers to be agreed by Friday to stop further protests will be tough for the Glazers to agree to imo.

3rd May 2021 at 4:35 pm #178576Pagan, the ladies team was famously disbanded shortly after the Glazers came in for not being profitable enough. All of a sudden, ladies football skyrockets in popularity and they want a piece of the pie again. They’re 4th by the way in the WSL, not second 😁
I’m not sure what point you’re making with the last sentence? Would I rather win with bought players than not win with homegrown players? Yes of course. The fact they’ve taken £2billion out of the club while the infrastructure has been allowed to deteriorate is indefensible.

3rd May 2021 at 4:43 pm #178580The MUST letter to the Glazers which I can’t see it going down very well with them.
“Dear Joel The Fans Forum wrote to you and your senior management team on Friday. We don’t know if you saw it, but after the events of yesterday we trust your attention is now fully focussed on the question of what happens next at Manchester United.
“First things first, let’s be very clear that no-one wants what happened at Old Trafford yesterday to be a regular event. We are football fans and we want to support our team. We don’t want to spend our days off work protesting outside our football ground. But what happened was the culmination of sixteen years in which your family’s ownership of the club has driven us into debt and decline, and we have felt ever more sidelined and ignored. After sixteen years not one member of the Glazer family has ever had so much as a conversation with us, the club’s Supporters Trust. Yesterday, that frustration reached boiling point. For the vast majority of the thousands of attendees at the protest they made their voice heard peacefully and respectfully. We support the right of fans to protest lawfully and, although we did not personally witness any such acts, of course we do not condone any acts of violence.
“None of us want this to continue. We all have better things to do. So we need to find a way forward, and we have a four point plan for you to do that:
“1. Willingly and openly engage and promote the government initiated fan-led review of football and use this as an opportunity to rebalance the current ownership structure in the favour of supporters
“2. Immediately appoint independent directors to the board whose sole purpose is to protect the interest of the club as a football club, not its shareholders
“3. Work with the Manchester United Supporters Trust and supporters more broadly to put in place a share scheme that is accessible to all and that has shares with the same voting rights as those held by the Glazer family. Should the appetite be there amongst fans then you should welcome, and offer no opposition to, the Glazer Family shareholding being reduced to a minority or indeed being bought out altogether.
4). Commit to full consultation with season ticket holders on any significant changes to the future of our club, including the competitions we play in
“We request a response to this 4 point plan, in public and in writing, by Friday.
“This is the only way to move this issue on. We strongly suggest you take it.”
United’s next home game is due to take place on Wednesday, May 12 against Leicester City.”

3rd May 2021 at 4:45 pm #178582Ed, within that 2 billion is the debt incurred in the purchase I presume, I would presume some of the employees of the club earn more than the owners, there’s not many businesses where that’s the case…..Pagan

3rd May 2021 at 4:51 pm #1785839, that’s not going to happen, rough translation
1. Give away £2 billion of your money
2. Let someone else look after another £2 billion of your money
3. Have absolutely no say in the £2 billion you don’t control, but still act as guarantor
4. Do as your told by a very small minority of the revenue stream
That’s an offer you can’t refuse…..Pagan

3rd May 2021 at 5:02 pm #178584Pagan, The gun against the Glazers heads in the last 3 lines is likely to antagonise rather than anything else imo.
Pagan re Ken Bates I knew him quite well as I made my company a Club sponsor over a number of years.
Not saying Bates didn’t make mistakes but his heart was always in the right place re Chelsea imo.
