I think adlab was thinking it was a goal scoring opportunity but plenty of cover for Leicester

20th January 2021 at 8:19 am #174034Congrats to Leicester they are a very good side well managed by Rodgers which is why they top the League currently. Awful performance by Chelsea only Mount gave his all.

20th January 2021 at 8:49 am #174035I caught the Leicester- Chelsea game last night and had to admire the way Leicester play, they are well and truly in the title race . Frank needs an old head at his side, he’s got the players ,but maybe not the managerial nous yet, that will come with experience, I hope he’s given the time .

20th January 2021 at 8:56 am #174036Nine, Lampard now odds on to be the next manager to be sacked. Do you think he’ll still be given the 3 years Abramovich is supposed to have promised him? It’s looking ominous now. Fair play to Chelsea if they stick by him through this, despite my criticism of his appointment. Whilst I’ve been very critical of all of Ole, Lampard and Arteta’s appointments, it’s commendable all have stuck by them so far through difficult times. I do stand by the fact that all were truly bizarre appointments and the 3 were incredibly lucky to get such big jobs. One thing that sticks out with Lampard, though, is the fact he’s so liked by the media. I’m sure he’d have had a much harsher time in the press, otherwise.
The Atheletic again running with stories of his successor being likely to be a German speaker with the hope he can get the best out of Werner and Havertz. Nagelsmann is probably more likely to be available in the summer than now whereas someone like Tuchel is an easy appointment. I’d fancy Hassenhuttl to do well there, too.

20th January 2021 at 8:59 am #174037If I was to put money on it, I’d suggest it’s likely that, if Lampard does go, an interim manager will be put in. Avram Grant, Rafa, Hiddink? Someone like that. Then they will take stock in the summer with someone like Nagelsmann targeted together with another assault on the Bundesliga for Haaland and the like.

20th January 2021 at 9:12 am #174038You canβt be expected to make so many changes and for things to click straight away.
Frank needs time. It be great to see him given time even if Chelsea finish 10th. Just give him time. Good players there but Chelsea need to find a formatting and stick with it
Football can change so quickly . People lose their shit in a few weeks after a few bad results. The Everton defeat set Chelsea back after a great run. Itβs just takes one bad result to start a downward spiral and confidence goes. Now the defence looks terrible. Reece James making a few mistakes now. Keeper looks very shakey and loads of players out of form at the same time.
Tough spell for Chelsea . Same is happening at Liverpool

20th January 2021 at 10:07 am #174039No I agree Sean. I’m all for giving him and Arteta time. If you’re going to make such a risky appointment, at least have the conviction to stand by it. A couple of wins in their next two home games and it will all be forgotten. It’s that tight at the top that a few wins on the bounce changes everything. Same goes for a few losses. Utd lose a couple and Ole will be favourite to go again. Pep and Klopp are the only ones who have enough credit in the bank, so to speak, to survive anything but a freefall into midtable.

20th January 2021 at 10:12 am #174040The interesting thing Ed will be if Roman has changed his ways if Chelsea finish outside top 4.

20th January 2021 at 10:16 am #174041I’d bet my life savings on Lampard not being in a job next season if he fails to at least get top 4, Sean. In fairness, I’d say that’s the right decision too. A club the size of Chelsea after the level of investment they had since finishing level on points with 3rd place can’t be finishing outside the top 4.

20th January 2021 at 11:24 am #174042Ed, impossible to second guess Roman mate. But I don’t think he’ll be swayed either way by what the bookies odds are.π
Neither do I think Frank was the wrong appointment he was perfect for the circumstance at Chelsea at the time imo no Hazard arguably the best player in the PL, no possibility of signings because of the transfer ban and the need to try and integrate the best Academy players because of that and against all the odds Frank led the team to a joint 3rd place finish on points and an FA Cup Final appearance which with a bit more good fortune Chelsea would have probably won the FA Cup.
This season Chelsea topped their CL Group and the PL and after a 17 game unbeaten run only a few weeks ago were being tipped by many as genuine title contenders indeed even you had Chelsea finishing above United a few weeks ago.
The wheels have come off currently but imo I don’t think Roman will rush into anything despite the media’s attempts to try and fan the flames.

20th January 2021 at 11:40 am #174043Nine, as you say, there is no way we can know what Roman is going to do. The same applies to the rumours that he was going to stick by Lampard for the 3 years suggested. That, just like the sack rumours are exactly that, rumours. All we have to go on is almost 20 years of seeing how Roman usually acts and we’ll find out just how much he’s changed if indeed Chelsea don’t have an upturn in form and make the top 4.
I do think the transfer ban is all a bit overplayed. Chelsea still had Pulisic coming in that same season who, I belive, was yet to make his PL debut by the time Hazard left. Spurs had a self-imposed transfer ban and made the CL final so it’s not quite as big a challenge as was made out. It’s also looking like Hazard would have made little impact anyway and was clearly on the decline, despite a good previous season.
Lampard joined a team who finished third and were the Europa league champions as well as League Cup finalists. He also had an awful lot of talented youngsters to call upon with Chelsea probably having the strongest academy in the country. It was a very strong squad he joined and it was also a season when traditional top challengers clubs like Arsenal, Spurs all faltered. I don’t think Utd or Chelsea should be all that proud about finishing 3rd and 4th so far behind the top 2.
I really don’t get this argument that Lampard was the best bet because Chelsea had no money to spend. Did he have any experience of dealing with top players? Any experience of managing in the PL?
Obviously I’m not suggesting Roman would be swayed by the betting odds but the bookmakers are rarely out of pocket so you’d imagine they had based their odds on either inside knowledge or simply going by historical trends, which suggest patience isn’t a trait Roman is blessed with.

20th January 2021 at 11:58 am #174044Ed, all about opinions mate that’s the way I see it you clearly don’t no worries we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
Ultimately all Managers are judged on results no matter who they are.
United stuck with Ole when things were looking shaky now United sit top of the PL and there’s talk of a contract extension. I’m not suggesting that will happen at Chelsea but football is very unpredictable even more so this season.
What will be will be.

20th January 2021 at 1:26 pm #174048At this stage last season, Liverpool were on 52 points after 18 games played. Which means Leicester, who are currently top on 38 points, would now be 14 points adrift of the leaders if Liverpool were matching last season’s performance. So because of the huge drop off, this season is obviously making a lot of teams look like title contenders, when in a lot of other seasons, they’d be miles off. So though Ole has made a marked improvement this season to Utd’s point total by 12 points from the same stage last season, he hasn’t just suddenly become a possible title winning manager. A lot of it is skewed by the circumstances this season. Interestingly, Chelsea are only 3 points off their total from this stage last season. Indeed most teams are closely matching their points tallies from last season, with the two big exceptions being Liverpool having a huge drop off (18 points less) & Man Utd gaining 12 points, creating a 30 point swing.

20th January 2021 at 3:50 pm #1740532 things as far as Chelsea are concerned:
1]Nobody should expect them to challenge for major titles straight away after signing so many players, and
2]there are far too many attacking-minded playersn that Lamps is trying to put into the team @ the same tiem.i.e.Mount,Kovacic,Ziyech,Werner,Havertz,Pulisic.Out of em 6,only 3 can play @ any given time,4 if the 2 chosen wingers dont drop off their natural positions and come inside, thus causing a traffic jam and hinderng each-other._____________________________
