So sorry Sean thought you were serious, didn’t realize you were teasing the guy but nevertheless let’s not argue over it as it was a real great game to treasure. There’s too many controversial offside decisions in football so moments like that should not be added to yet another offside goal. Same as if an attackers nose or any irrelevant part of his body is captured as offside the goal should stand.

Blaze, that’s not strictly true about the offside, the player can be standing in an offside position when the ball is played forward and if a defending team player deliberately plays the ball then he’s not offside even if he doesn’t get back onside…..Pagan

Here’s what former Premier League referee Peter Walton made of Manchester City’s first goal on BT Sport:

“My initial thoughts were as Mings played the ball, it wasn’t a deliberate play on the ball, so therefore, didn’t play the player onside.

“However, the law says: ‘A player in an offisde position, receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, is NOT to be considered to have gained an advantage.’

“Therefore, Mings playing the ball deliberately – and we can see that he does that when he chests the ball – plays the Manchester City player onside, even though he is in an offside position. So therefore, the goal should stand.

“Rodri wasn’t gaining an advantage by being where he was, that’s the law and the fact that Mings makes a deliberate play on the ball, negates the fact that the player was in an offside position.”

Two very harsh decisions on Villa but on the basis of the current and flawed rules both were correct. I would have been furious if it had been the other way. However I do resent some of the media comment particularly from former Liverpool players and pundits not least the Liverpool Echo.
Why do they have such a chip oh their shoulders. They won the league last year and are only a couple of points behind. Perhaps Liverpool lads on here can explain .
I looked at the rules this morning(nothing better to do) and Mings, attempted to control the ball started a new phase of play. Mings then lost the ball so Rodri’s previous offside position was negated. Had Mings not played the ball and and not attempted to control it it would have been offside. Utterly stupid rule. However Dean Smith should know the rules and was correctly red carded.

Never even heard of that rule, just let players stand offside, then run back & tackle you? In hindsight I should’ve cleared it, 100%, but didn’t even know that was the case. Nonsense

It was the correct decision going by the letter of the law

Liverpool Echo. When I look at the City page on Newsnow articles concerning City are highlighted some of which are in the Echo. I look at some of them to see what they say on the basis that they have come on the City page.

I actually thought it was bad defending from Mings, looked he was trying to control it with his knee I think. Remember a few years back an attacker was also offside run back and headed it out the keepers hands and then scored. Basically it boils down to a lack of awareness.

Super strike from Silva for the first goal. What led up to the strike though might be within the laws of the game but if the laws of the game deem it ok “the laws an ass”.

Villa can consider themselves very unlucky to lose to both the goals they lost to last night.

And laws like this together with the offside rule that rules a player offside if he scores when his hand might be offside when a line is drawn against it in a freeze frame need urgent review imo!

Huge improvements from cancelo and particularly John stones.

I also think utd are genuine contenders. Ole now knows his best 11 and he has a plan.
