When the chips are down and you want your senior players to pull the rest of the team up with them and lead by example, they go completely missing.
Points after falling behind last season:
1. Man Utd = 31
The next best had 20 points. If that’s not evidence of the ability to pull the team up when the chips are down, I don’t know what is. Even on Saturday, the reaction from Leeds equalising was excellent. Now, I still don’t think we’ll challenge but it won’t be because the team can’t pull themselves up when the chips are down IMO.

18th August 2021 at 8:40 am #182934that’s a good point, however that is more of a result of the problems Ole had with them starting games really badly. Many teams go a goal down and come back from it and granted ManU did that very well last season. My point is more that those two players go awol against the big teams when they should be standing up and showing what they are made of.
In the 10 league games against the other top 6 teams from last season the stats for those two players look like this:
Fernandes: 3 goals (2 pens), 2 assists
Pogba: 0 goals, 0 assistsIn arguably their biggest game of the season, the EL final, they went completely missing.

18th August 2021 at 9:01 am #182936AnonymousQuite right Mr. Fox, in our days no such thing as going missing for the big games, those are the ones you shine the most.

18th August 2021 at 9:17 am #182938I personally think United are the favourites to wim this PL season. Because they had been improving in the last two season. Theybhsve goals and assists everywhere in the team. They have what Chelsea, Liverpool and City doesn’t have which is Bruno Fernandez who scores from central. They have Pogba who despite getting unfair criticsm is a creative player and can score from midfield. They have Sancho and Rashford out wide and M. Greenwood waiting in the wings. Their defence is solid. And most importantly they have Ferguson in the background to advice.π what more proof do you need?

18th August 2021 at 9:24 am #182939I think utd can really challenge this season. They have everything going forward but Iβll still question their defence. I thought maguire was excellent in the euros. I think heβs a real leader and heβs gone some way to prove me wrong but I still having a niggling doubt about him
Utd conceded more goals then Liverpool last season which I found baffling. The goal Kepler situation aswell but I even think in midfield they are strong.
Varane will make a huge difference. Itβs utds best starting 11 since 2011 in my view

18th August 2021 at 9:31 am #182940Ed excellent point about utd coming from behind last season. Every time they went 1-0 down, they seemed to up a gear.
I really fancy them to be right up there tvis season.
Chelsea aswell. I see tuchel playing it down but Chelseaβs squad is right up there with cities. They are an excellent side
On paper it should be the tightest league for years.

Yeah that was a real problem last season Sean. I think we condeded the 2nd most goals from set pieces last season which was a real problem for Utd. We brought in a new set-piece coach in the summer which will hopefully remedy that.

18th August 2021 at 10:52 am #182943The key difference in comparison to previous seasons in recent times is stability, progression, and continuity. Allowing time and players to develop in their own skin to gain experience and maturity.
There is a steady ship with United and a momentum going good enough to challenge for the Title. There are new additions too to strengthen the squad overall.
It’s keeping the players fit and consistency in results.

18th August 2021 at 12:18 pm #182947Thatβs it nil. Some question ole but thereβs been progression each season.
Heβs bought quite well again this summer. Itβs just the freak results like losing to sheff utd last season etc have to stop

18th August 2021 at 12:36 pm #182948I wonder how David Moyes would now get on with this Man Utd squad with this much improved recruitment team in place? Serious question.

18th August 2021 at 1:03 pm #182949Mikus, the ultimate difficulty I felt Moyes had his timing.
His ‘shoe-horned’ into a slot where big shoes needed filling and rebuilding. To a degree, at that point of time and the squad reminded me of Liverpool circa 1991.
Ageing players. It’s an interesting point with what he has got out of West Ham.

18th August 2021 at 1:06 pm #182950That’s it Sean. Sometimes you have to be prepared to ride out when things are going so good.
It’s been difficult for Ole. He’s kept a really good head and focus in the job. The Media, some fans etc have jumped on his back.
Too many managerial changes too soon hinders.

18th August 2021 at 1:22 pm #182951Well that’s it nil. It was awful timing for him and the long term vision the club saw for him (by giving him the 6 year contract) was never really there, but it is now with Ole. Yet Moyes is much more experienced than Ole. I’m not saying that would necessarily mean Moyes would now be doing better, but I just think it’s an interesting one to ponder.

18th August 2021 at 1:35 pm #182953I think the United job was far too big for Moyes but it was a massive task taking over from SAF whoever took over.
Tbh I’m not sure the United job is not to big for Ole too time will tell.

18th August 2021 at 1:59 pm #182956I think Moyes is a very underrated manager who just took the right job at the wrong time. I think taking that job set him back 5 or so years in his career. He became a bit of a joke amongst fans. “The chosen one” etc.
I always said the only manager with the arrogance to take over from Ferguson was Mourinho. I honestly don’t think anyone (bar Mourinho) would have succeeded in replacing Ferguson, especially with him still around. The fact Mourinho later came in and largely failed is beside the point, as I think he was a different manager back then.
Moyes has done wonders for West Ham and is finally showing what a good manager he can be.

18th August 2021 at 2:29 pm #182960Ed true enough Moyes has done well at West Ham but straight after United he had two poor showings at both Real Sociedad and Sunderland. Be interesting to see where West Ham go from here the Europa League might stretch them.

18th August 2021 at 2:30 pm #182961Yeah Nine, that’s what I meant by how the Utd job set him back. I think it made his next jobs more difficult as his reputation was in tatters following the Utd spell.
