I think where Wenger left Arsenal and where they are now is too different. it’s unfair to accuse an accusation finger at Wenger when he built everything that is at Arsenal. The mess that is at Arsenal now is purely down to the Arsenal board not being proactive. as for the overpaid players you have mentioned, the only players who are Wenger era signing are Xhaka, Aubamenyang, Bellarin, Holding, and Lacazette. and of those players, all are Key pillars of Arsenal today, the rest are signed by his successors. he left Arsenal at 5th place, only missed the top four two out of 22 years he was in charge. but since he has left, Arsenal finished fifth place and eighth places twice.

16th August 2021 at 8:13 pm #182878Stevo, Conte would be a great appointment for Arsenal problem is I can’t see him accepting the nonsense that currently goes on at Arsenal.
As I’ve said previously I don’t think things will sort themselves out properly at Arsenal under the current owners it all goes a lot deeper than just Arteta imo.

Wenger is a legend and I will always love abs respect the man and what he did for us
Unfortunately he didnβt move with the times
Had total power and over spent on dross
All those you mention are either not good enough or dropped off the edge of a cliff
We had such a bad an overpaid squad with the likes of ozil
So with all that itβs been compounded by our atrocious owner and board
And now further by a rookie manager who isnβt good enough
Itβs not just Wenger but what fe left took tears to fix with a competent board and as we donβt have that we are still in a mess_____________________________

16th August 2021 at 8:23 pm #182880AnonymousYa, it’s a mess for sure. You can’t ask for new owners but you can ask for an experienced winner to be placed in charge of the team. Arteta was always up against it but he’s spent money and have they gotten even a little better?

16th August 2021 at 8:37 pm #182883It’s a common problem Steveo when managers have been there a long time and then leave. Wenger I think had a lot of power at the club, and when he departed, it left a vacuum and the owners seem to be still scrambling around for leadership & direction. Man Utd have only just recently settled down again after Fergie left.

16th August 2021 at 8:42 pm #182884Steveo,
I don’t disagree with much of what you say, except that when Wenger left Arsenal they were in a good position both squad and financially. much of the injuries that Arsenal as a club has suffered has been self-inflicted. and I would point an accusing finger to Arteta because he is the biggest culprit. although both Unai Emery and Wenger may take some responsibility. the only regret that Wenger could have was that he didn’t tie Sanchez who was Arsenal’s equivalent to what Hazard was to Chelsea to a long term contract. and since then Arsenal has failed to replace him. At least Chelsea has indirectly replaced Hazard.
Now Arsenal has a tough decision to make, even if they sack Arteta now, no big-name manager would risk their reputation in the middle of a season, so they would have to stick with Arteta, but how much more injuries can he inflict on the club until now and the end of the season? even the next manager needs a huge investment and time. ok, Arsenal would guarantee time and patience, but can they guarantee a huge investment?

16th August 2021 at 11:40 pm #182887probably controversial view here, but I actually think that Wenger left Arsenal in a stronger position (players-wise) than Fergie did with United. That united team had not had much in terms of player investment in the couple of years prior to his retirement. The writing was on the wall when he last won the league, that united team was shipping a stupid amount of goals and really, in my opinion Van Persie almost single-handedly won them the league.
When Wenger left, there was still a considerable amount of quality players left. The fact that subsequent managers have been unable to get the best out of them is testament to Wenger’s ability as a manager (as the above was to Fergie). I personally didn’t think Emery was doing too bad a job but obviously this wasn’t good enough. The problem is, Arsenal gambled that they could get better when in fact they’ve got considerably worse! Arteta is well and truly out of his depth, he seems to think he can be Pep 2.0 and achieve Pep’s style with inferior players. As Nine said, I can’t see any decent manager going anywhere near Arsenal at the moment, same goes for players. It’s a shambles_____________________________

I strongly agree. I have no idea how Fergie won the title with that team but he walked it, somehow. it was, arguably, his greatest achievement. No manager comes in afterwards and does well.

17th August 2021 at 7:50 am #182889Yeah I don’t think that’s particularly controversial at all. Only Ferguson could have won the league with that side. This was the team for his last game. All the good players on the bench were very much on their last legs. Very poor side

7 Valencia
4 Jones
6 Evans
28 Buttner
23 Cleverley
16 Carrick

20 van Persie

17th August 2021 at 7:55 am #182890I really think it’s time Souness was replaced at Sky. I genuinely can’t see what Sky see in him as a pundit. He’s an awful pundit and it was great to see Micah Richards put him in his place. He just comes across as a bitter old man, the way he turns his back on them. Very much enjoying Micah though who I think is a breath of fresh air

17th August 2021 at 8:54 am #182892No idea Lucky. He’s always had a massive chip on his shoulder regarding Pogba. Completely refused to praise him at the weekend despite Pogba getting 4 assists. He’s more than outstayed his welcome at Sky. Keane can also come across as an angry old man but seems less bitter and has great chemistry with the likes of Micah Richards.

17th August 2021 at 9:35 am #182893AnonymousI dunno, I’d have questions for Pogba. How many years has he been at Utd and it’s only very recently that he’;s starting to show his form there. Where was the motivation to play before now? He seems like he wasn’t bothered before and it is worse when you know how good he could be if he wanted to. I don’t mind Sounness so much, not saying that I always agree with him but I havent really been watching Sky now for a while. I watch matches on streams and that usually doesnt include pre/post-match.
I’m still unsure about Micah Richards. He used to annoy the hell out of me but I’ve seen a few good moments with him there towards the end of last season. I think maybe he’s the kind to get used to a bit.

17th August 2021 at 9:45 am #182894Bad day at the office for Souness how you can’t praise Pogba after that performance on Saturday and 4 assists is beyond me. But Souness was right they should have moved on to talk about Chelsea.π

17th August 2021 at 10:01 am #182896I actually thought the same of Hansen and Lawrenson on the MOTD. Souness’ days are numbered. Neville needs to be careful though, if Man Utd don’t win another title in the next 10 years or so, he will end up in the same bitter and twisted corner.

17th August 2021 at 10:27 am #182898Mak, on and off Pogba has been brilliant. Far too inconsistent though, so he deserves to be pulled up on that. But to not praise him after Saturday is baffling. Souness has always had an agenda against Pogba and it didn’t help when Pogba was asked about it for him to reply that he doesn’t know who Souness is π. His agenda seemed to crank up a few notches from that point on.

Mak, did you see the mini-series Keane and Micah did before the Euros? It was very good!
