29th August 2021 at 1:33 pm #183953There is a big media buzz about Chelsea at the moment because of the business they’ve done and because they won the CL last season and are new challengers this season and that’s understandable. Yesterday was and did feel like a battle between an established power and a rising power.
Chelsea had a more composed first half than Liverpool and edged it in terms of controlling the game, but Liverpool did still get back into it and it is a real shame we couldn’t see what would happen in the second half had both sides had 11 men. Two contrasting styles, but both effective.
For Liverpool, with Van Dijk & co back, a lot of the ingredients are there again that helped them with their success in previous seasons. But I thought Hendo lacked sharpness with him easing his way back in, and I think they are also missing some magic in the middle to break teams down, which has been a problem for some time now. I’m all for blooding and developing youth, but I’m just still not sure if Elliot still needs a bit more time, and personally think Keita would have been the better bet yesterday.
As for Chelsea, they look a very resolute team and a very clever one going forwards. They do look like they’ve got that Mourinho-esque infallibility they had under him years ago. It’s just a question now of whether they can mirror that very high bar of City to win the vast majority of games and be almost flawless, assuming City maintain that bar.

29th August 2021 at 1:56 pm #183954Anonymous“Why do you feel the need argue for a final verdict here? be secure in your own opinion mate.”
Asking others for their opinion has nothing to do with my own security in mine. This is a football forum, I found it odd that you Chelsea lads think you were robbed and I wanted to see if my opinion was going against the grain, in terms of non-Chelsea fans.
“What is the rationale for 2-0 though?
Mak, towards the end of the first half Mount should have scored a second to make it 2 nil he didn’t and it’s all yesterday’s fish and chip paper now!”
He missed the target, just as Hendo completely failed , with an even better chance. Young Elliott could have scored at the start of the match but didnt, I’m not counting that as us being 1-0 up either, cause he missed. Hendo and Elliott score if they were better players, on better form, or in a good moment etc etc, just as the Chelsea chances went, which were few and far between. You werent the only team who weathered the storm like 😛
“Don’t get the debate. “
There’s a definitely air that Chelsea were robbed and that we were somehow saved by the pen/red. My side of the debate is that we were every bit as good as Chelsea up until then. The “should have been 2-0”, is basically saying that we somehow, miraculously shouldnt have had even 1 goal… which was going in until a defender decided to be a GK.
This is the problem with contentious decisions and LD is welcome to his opinion. I even think that Chelsea are good enough for the opinion to be valid. They have every reason to be excited about their up and coming team (Champions of Europe already). My own opinion is that Liverpool are the best team in the PL, although we’re carrying a few players ATM… a lot fewer than last season though and they will come good.
These opinions are all fine, really, it’s this 2-0, or that it wasnt a red card or whatever… this is definitely worthy of debate and discussion.

No, I’m sure that both our teams will give a really good account of themselves.

In defence of the argument and not any particular team being attached. Any really decent side at their very best would batter any other very decent side who were playing to their average level.
Chelsea at their very best would beat the piss out of Liverpool playing to an average lvl and vice versa. We’ve seen this so many times between top sides over the years in the PL.
Any team at their very best, is playing to a standard much higher than their average.

I agree with all of this except for Keita.
Elliott did very well for a lad who was playing his first massive game for us but does still look like he will need a lot of time to develop further. Maybe against weaker PL opposition, he might light them up.
Hendo was poor and maybe him not being up to full match fitness is a reason. Mane was poor and someone else mentioned Robbo on the other site, I agree there too. As for needing that extra bit of magic in midfield, well Thiago will be starting for us very soon and will give us more tools to open up opportunities.
I think this could be a defining season for Mane and Jota. We need more from both of them.

29th August 2021 at 2:44 pm #183962Half time in a game of few chances, although the longer the half on you can sense Spurs getting a tighter grip on proceedings… and we’ve just scored a bit of a flukey goal there….
But to continue the ongoing coulda, woulda, shoulda theory from yesterday, we deserve to be 6 up on the balance of play except for the part about the ball going in the back of the net… 🙂

29th August 2021 at 3:17 pm #183965Mak, regarding Henderson, Robertson & Keita, I can never quite understand why managers will still plump for their first choice players even when they’re not completely fit. You see it often in finals when a star man who’s been injured rushes to get fit, the manager plays him, and they rarely do anything because they’re not fit. It doesn’t matter how good they are, if you ain’t fully fit or sharp, you’re not really much use to anyone. So it’s not surprising Robertson & Hendo had average performances. And it’s frustrating when Tsmikas & Keita, who have been much fitter and sharper, were left on the bench.

29th August 2021 at 3:20 pm #183967Bit flat this half, Watforjd seem to be saving themselves for a 10-minute blitz for the end of the game, and the Spuds are pretty knocking it about without much urgency… this could come back and bite us in the Arsenal… time for some subs to mix it up a bit I think…

That’s what I thought but then someone came along and contested the argument.
“Is “talking bullocks” a specialist subject? Sign me up!!! “You’ll have to go through me first.
“Certainly was 1-1, Mak, I was watching… “
You’re mistaken.
Mikus, that’s an excellent point alright man. often we just wouldnt have the option to go without but in this case, Klopp maybe should have gone with Keita and Tsimikas. I didnt agree with you regards Keita in place of Elliott but I do in place for Hendo, this time. It’s rare that I’d prefer Keita to Hendo besides that though. Of course, if Keita were playing to a very high level and miraculously not injured after 4-5 games then sure, I’d consider starting him ahead of a fully fit Hendo but that’ll never happen.
