7th May 2019 at 12:42 pm #40193Money is a major factor in a Club winning things and as Adlab points out it always has been and always will be.
But it’s not just what you spend but how you spend it.
It’s no accident that City and Liverpool are the two best performing teams both have spent and spent very wisely.
If Spurs had invested wisely who knows where they might be now.
United have invested enormous funds but on the wrong players and they’ve had a revolving door policy on Managers to since the departure of Fergie which hadn’t helped. Which confirms it’s not just throwing money at it.
Pep is a major factor at City as is Klopp as indeed is Pochettino. They are now the Super Managers and how long they stay at their current Clubs will have a significant impact on the continued development of the top 3.
Also nobody can now spend more than they generate and there is now a major focus on City’s revenue creation and transfer spending from UEFA too.

7th May 2019 at 12:43 pm #40194Adlab absolutely itβs the team with the money wins. The slight difference your mob has is you spent unprecedented money over numerous season in a row to basically buy the EPL. No one else had that luxury except Chelsea. Itβs not like you built your squad over many seasons, you know strengthen where you need it, your mob just splashed the cash & no one else could compete.
Back in the day most players loved the clubs they played for, had pride in wearing the shirt & had a genuine passion for their clubs. Nowadays they donβt give a rats ringer, whoever pays the most is the dream move. Fact is Everyone else is playing catch up to your mob & you will win the EPL for the next few seasons. We spent huge money just to try keep up & won nothing. You have world class international players coming off the bench that would be starting in pretty much any other team. As I said I take it with a grain of salt, you can literally buy sports titles. I feel for the likes of Nil that get down about it, I watch games for entertainment. I didnβt watch many Liverpool games this season compared to last season because we were attacking everyone last season.
Must admit I love seeing manu wasting their money on average players, no complaints from me on that one._____________________________

7th May 2019 at 12:46 pm #40195Oz, I am with you mate to a large degree. I get it. My Parents have been telling me for years what you’ve asserted about not getting too caught up.
You mention however it’s the supporters that care, and obviously those ones care enough to regularly attend the grounds. If we then suddenly decided not to care then where would that leave us?
Man United have supporters that reached a point where they realised there was a serious disconnection between the Club and the Community and thus why Salford City was created.
The way the infrastructure is, there are rarely home grown individuals born and brought up in the city of Liverpool that break into the First Team. You could say the same for a lot of other Prem Clubs. Managers are placed under the Spotlight to assemble a Team and deliver Results quickly – largely down to the point of view of the amount of money invested in the game. Of course, Supporters have expectations and those who remain on a journey continue to hope for the best. Some will feel let down when falling short and express their feelings of disappointment.

7th May 2019 at 12:49 pm #401969 the thing is the start city have on everyone else, thatβs why theyβll stay at the top. As I said world class internationals that would be starting at other clubs coming off the bench, all the rest are playing catch up. I built a bit of respect for Pep but lost it after his interview, youβd think Liverpool played against teams in the Scottish league the way he reckons we had it easy. He has it easier than any manager bringing top quality off the bench.
Anyway no point arguing about it, it wonβt change. Iβll honestly laugh when city win it again next season, it doesnβt bother me at all but I donβt get people thinking they are all that & a bag of chips, theyβre just richer than anyone else._____________________________

7th May 2019 at 12:51 pm #40197If money was the sole dictator of success, youβd expect Man City would be leading Liverpool by a lot more than just 1 point at this stage of the season. And weβve also got further in the CL than City have. Money is but one of many ingredients you need but itβs not the sole dictator of success. In big moments this season, the pressure has got to both Guardiola and Klopp and no amount of money can legislate for that. Thatβs not to say money still hasnβt had a detrimental effect on the overall game, but it can never truly destroy the essence of the game – i.e. that itβs still ultimately about 11 human beings against 11 other human beings. And nobody is infallible.
Interesting that Gary Neville said last night that Man Utdβs target next season should first and foremost be to field 11 players that actually want to play for the club, not how much money they spend. And I agree.

7th May 2019 at 12:52 pm #40198Sean, that’s actually a good way of looking at it mate.
I don’t know a team in mankind that could potentially finish the season with 97 points but not be crowned Champions. Freakish as it look on paper, we’d be the Team ever with the highest points as Runners Up.

7th May 2019 at 12:56 pm #40200Unless Watford do a Wimbledon of 1988, the Cup is sewn for Man City and at the very least they would provide Liverpool the pathway to play in Next Season’s Community Shield in August at Wembley Stadium – que sera sera π

7th May 2019 at 12:59 pm #40201Nil donβt get me wrong mate, I love LFC & will get back to see another game at Anfield. I absolutely love the history, I love the people (scousers are some of the nicest people Iβve met on my travels), I loved the city, I just felt I fit in there. I just canβt take sport seriously enough to get involved to much. Not just football either, I used to love rugby league & boxing but theyβve gone down the gurgler to me as well. I still coach some kids boxing but donβt like the way itβs gone at the top level. The best used to fight the best, now itβs all political & about who promotes who & what agency the fighters are with. Crazy stuff.

7th May 2019 at 1:03 pm #40202Mikus definitely expected city to have it wrapped up long before this, the lads have done amazingly well to push them this far. Itβs not like them winning is a surprise though is it, pretty much everyone predicted them to win it at the start of the season, we just made is closer than most expected. So close yet so far away, we could win 20-0 next game, have lost only 1 game & still not win. Great effort though all things considered. Great effort by spurs as well, I hope they get in & win the C/L.

7th May 2019 at 1:07 pm #40204Mikus maybe not the some indicator of success but definitely the main one. As the Silverchair song says β you say that money isnβt everything, well Iβd like to see you live without itβ.

7th May 2019 at 1:08 pm #40207Oz, @ 12:49, Brendan Rodgers last night in his Post Match Conference made an interesting point on players playing with personality. I noticed that a lot with the examples of Maddison, Chilwell, Choudhury, and Ricardo. They could dribble the ball, keep close control, turn and shield with Panache.
I saw different sides to Aguero, and both sets of Silva’s. They can’t take it when they receive their own medicine of quality and aggression. Good on Mike Dean to award the Free-kicks and not shy away on home soil.
The core and extended quality has taken them over the line. You’re right mate on them not being completely ‘all that’, but in the same breath as much as I’m disappointed at the prospect of all this being at our expense, you have to sometimes acknowledge what they’ve achieved and offer a Handshake to them.

7th May 2019 at 1:12 pm #40208Oz, @ 12:59, mate you’re living proof of LFC having a World Wide Fan base. We have done for decades. You are right about Liverpool being a great city and having a great community. It’s all these silly stereotypes and stigmas attached, but I just ignore all that.
Every geographical area across the country has it’s good and bad points.

7th May 2019 at 1:19 pm #40210As a United fan I’m very dissappointed that the club has spend so badly. We have no leaders in our team. And the club have no strategy or real aim. After SAF we’ve hired Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho and now OGS. Four managers with different profiles. And they all bought/ are going to buy their own players. It’s like insisting on putting together a jigsaw with pieces you know are not going to fit together. It’s simply bad planning, bad strategy and short term thinking.
I was one of those blind enough to get caught up in all that nostalgia about OGS, the link to the past and the United way. Now I think it’ll end in tears at the end of next season at the latest, and then it’ll be swings and roundabouts once again. When you plan that badly no amount of money will save you. That being said I’m not too impressed with City. Yes, they’ve bought well but their owners have more money than basically anyone, so it’s hardly a level playing field. You should expect City to win with that kind of financial backing. If anything it’s pretty poor that they’re not performing better in Europe. Perhaps Gullit was right when he said Pep can’t do it without Messi?
(https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2019/04/19/5cb9ec1022601dbd338b4577.html)I think Liverpool (and Spurs for a long while) have done remarkably well pushing City to the limit considering they both are a league below when it comes to being able to spend money. With that in mind I would really like City to slip in the banana skin and lose out to Liverpool. If not for anything else then because it would be epic to see Nil’s reaction on here if it did happen π

7th May 2019 at 2:21 pm #40212AnonymousNil, the City lads were under immense pressure. I feel like you’re writing off their character a bit dare I say “Willy-Nilly” π .. I couldn’t help myself there sry but ya , I mean I know what you’re talking about. There were a bit of lashing out going on. Silva could have been off TBH. I just think we’ve got to give people a little slack under such conditions.
You have previously called Aguero a “so called” great player but in my eyes, he truly is and without the “so called” bit. I’d love to have him in our team. He would give Firmino a run for his money no problem, maybe even keep him out of the team.
