Jim, please forgive my sense of humour failure but third or fourth time around it gets a bit wearing.

For the sake of clarity I hold no candle for Liverpool other than admiring the football they play and JΓΌrgen Klopp in the same way I admire the football Man City play and Guardiola.

I do think Liverpool will be City’s closest challenger for the title but for all sorts of reasons if Chelsea don’t win it and I think it very unlikely that they will challenge let alone win it I would prefer City to win it which was exactly my position last season.

I look at spurs and they have a fantastic 1st 11 and some very good back up players aswell.

Son wasn’t in the squad on sat as away. They have two of the best centre backs in Europe. One of the best strikers in the world

Excellent side who will be right up there.
I do think they will lose to utd on Monday though. Their last few performances at old tarford have been shocking. Last year was really poor.

Sean, I agree mate as I said in my post above “I think Spurs are a potential challenger too and frankly should be higher in the betting than Chelsea. “

              Too early.
We have two serious injuries one for three months, one for the season.
Imagine if Spurs lost Kane or Liverpool Saleh. Anything can happen. Last season we lost Mendy for the season and so on. Injuries happen. You need a big squad which is why I think Spurs may come up short.

Whilst I think the injury to KDB will have an impact on City as others have suggested City are much more capable of getting by without KDB with the strength of their squad than either Spurs could should they lose Kane or Liverpool should they lose Salah.

i don’t care what people think of spurs. what i don’t get is the adoration for this liverpool team who have so far won nothing, finished 4th in the league last season, 25 points behind city. got in my car before and they had a phone in on talksport discussing liverpool being the only credible challengers for city. i genuinely want to know why people think this. whats is it based on? its not the liverpool fans saying this. its the media, its people on this forum, its people on other forums, its everyone but no one is actually saying why. personally i think its because they want it so badly.

We are progressing but nothing to get carried away with. It’s only two games old which is why I don’t understand utd getting written off

We have done nothing that is very true but we are progressing very well. Very enjoyable to watch and a lot of positivity on and off the line ch but let’s just relax. You would think. There was 2 games to go

We have challenged for the league twice in about 18 years now all of a suddenly we are 2nd gavourites when we have spent less then utd over two seasons and finished 6 points behind them

I really don’t get why people are writing other teams off. It’s maddness. I think we will finish 3rd but I’m really hoping we can win some trophy

Some of the absolute shite spoken after the first games of the season.

Perreira is going to be great for utd. Big interview then he’s taken off at half time and now all of a sudden he’s crap again. Crazy talk

Then it’s like Shaw is bsck after one good game. Keita is top top class when he hasn’t got out of 2nd gear. Emery is playing the same way as Wenger and nothing’s changed with regards style of play when it clearly has.

The season is two games old and people are getting written off and others over hyped. It’s just silly

The reason why Liverpool and City are the favourites is because there is maximum harmony between the managers and players at both clubs and both have top quality squads now, City obviously having the better strength. Also, whoever is going to compete with (or even beat) City needs to also match their very strong attack because this further increases the odds of you winning games (assuming the defence is also strong, which again was proven and backed up in the stats on MNF last night showing Liverpool had very strong (and champion level) defensive stats in the last 6 months, which if extrapolated to a full season, showed them conceding just 28 goals I think it was). They’ve also added and further strengthened their squad throughout the team over summer, and certainly look to have had the best window out of the top clubs by addressing many of their weaknesses. (They may however be more susceptible to injuries than other teams it should be said).

In comparison, Arsenal are very much under construction this year with a new manager who has to coach new ideas and sort his squad out. Mourinho still doesn’t have the team and squad he wants imo, and I just don’t think he trusts or has faith in them to deliver what he fully wants or expects. He’ll obviously only do so badly because he’s still a top coach but only doing so badly ain’t enough to compete with the high bar Guardiola has set. Spurs will always be a very solid and effective side but for me lack the top quality attacking play and goals of Liverpool and City (but we’ll see). Chelsea may also do very well but they still have a new manger there who will take time to instil his philosophy.

Just read that Mino Raiola has criticised Paul scholes because he dared to point out where Pogba was poor vs Brighton! Really! Fat agent who knows nothing about football criticises Scholes for saying his pay cheque was poor, Scholes being one of the best midfield players England has produced and thats from a City fan! You couldn’t make this stuff up. Talk about deluded agents lol.

Raoila is a joke of an agent and a joke of a man, Jim. He’s desperate to get as many big moves out of Pogba as possible over the course of his career, in order to get his pay off. If Pogba was half the player Scholes was, we’d have got good value for money.

In other news, talksport this morning discussing whether VvD and Gomez can be the best centre back partnership in premiership history. Seriously? Based on what? A clean sheet against palace? It’s just absolutely ridiculous.

mikus – to counter what you have said.

last year liverpool had maximum harmony between the manager and players and they came 4th.

liverpool have the same attack they had last season which helped them finish 4th. they’ve added shaqiri but i don’t think he will play enough to make a huge difference.

defensively they did well, but you don’t work things out based on 6 months. i believe last calendar year (maybe year before) spurs got more points than any one else, but it works over a 38 game season from august to may.

if you look at liverpool’s form from january to the end of the season they came 3rd – 7 points behind city, 6 behind spurs and level on points with united.

squad has more depth, i’ll give you that but i don’t think anywhere near enough to compete with city this season. if salah or firmino get injured it will be very difficult for them. huge depth in midfield though.

the thing is, if it was liverpool fans saying all this stuff i wouldn’t have an issue with it. they have every right to be optimistic. one of my palace supporting friends thinks they have a top 6 midfield – he’s completely wrong but love his optimism. what i dont get is that all these outsiders are finding any reason possible to big liverpool up at the moment and its based on absolutely nothing. as i said previously comments like – last season they would’ve dropped points in that type of game – really piss me off especially when last season they won that exact game!

Paxton, some fair points. I’ll just say a few things:

I think Liverpool undoubtedly got distracted by the CL particularly in the last few months of last season and obviously had a weaker squad than they do now. Without that distraction, I think they could well have finished 5-6 points better off, which would have had them close to second with Man Utd. Now obviously, that’s still 20 points to make up on City, but it’s a start.

As for the attack last season, they were still 2nd highest in terms of goals scored in the league. I don’t really this side of the game was the major problem for Liverpool last year (I will certainly agree with you that whilst that front 3 is incredibly effective together, if you lose anyone out of it, particularly ManΓ© or Salah, it would lose quite a bit of its edge, so there is a vulnerability there which is why Liverpool wanted another attacker and why they went in for Fekir, though they could obviously revisit this area in January).

The main problem as we know was the defence and that didn’t get rectified until half way through the season. I hear what you say about the defensive stats only being over the calendar year, but the point is the defence was a big issue and has now clearly turned a corner and has been further strengthened over the summer. That should be worth at least another 10 points to Liverpool over the season, so there’s 15 points potentially made up to City.

Also, as well as VVD, I think Keita will prove to be a huge signing – I think the club has finally found a replacement for Gerrard and that will have a huge impact on the club at both ends of the pitch. Obviously no player is like for like, but we saw what difference a player like Kante made to Chelsea. Another 5 points made up to City potentially? And City may get a bit distracted by the CL this year if they get further so who knows.

It should be said it could still be close with the other challengers, and there may well be an element of the blistering way both City and Liverpool play that has got the media a bit carried away. But given the above, there is still good reason to believe these two will be the two main challengers.

Let’s look at it another way if Liverpool aren’t City’s main challenger who is and why?

Arsenal and Chelsea are in transition with new Managers and are unlikely challengers so that really only leaves Spurs who many consider with no signings not quite as strong this season as Liverpool with the signings of VVD in January and Alisson and Keita in the Summer and United currently are all over the place.

I wouldn’t rule anyne out for the title race even United it’s far too early but it looks like the two main challengers to City currently are Liverpool and Spurs providing both remain fairly injury free.
