1st January 2024 at 5:22 am #211611Nil, it is awful that players houses are being broken into as they play but there’s a simple solution to this. Players and clubs can afford to have people watch their places and it would be nothing to them either. So I’m not interested.
As for more and more people stealing from supermarkets (food). This is not a crime problem. This is a poverty problem, and the solution is not so easy.
As for the title race. I just want us to get through January without falling off. I’m not throwing out the white flag just because Salah is going but our attack is already really struggling, so Klopp has got to find some ways of getting the others to improve or it could be a very bad month or so for us.
We start with Newcastle, our last game before we lose endo and Salah. I hope we don’t enter our tough times on anything but a win. That is what scares me the most.
I guess we’ll play Gakpo there? I don’t actually have a problem with that. He’s not Salah but when he isn’t lamenting life on the ball, he’s actually a very good player and he’s got cannon for a foot.
Chucky, going back to a previous comment about how Liverpool could have had a red card for a possible 2nd yellow. Yep, that’s absolutely true. Could have. Should have tho? I dunno. I think it wouldn’t have been a first yellow card… And hey if I’m wrong, we’ve gotten quite a few going the other way. Is there a team with more red cards than us? All very soft from what I remember. I think maybe except 1? …
I don’t wanna have long talks about how Liverpool are being mistreated etc though. I honestly hope we’ve seen the back of it but it’s the league that’s suffering and I am kinda coming around to the idea that there is FINALLY ACTUAL match-fixing within the PL.
I don’t mean on the “we just lost and I’m upset” way.
This season is definitely different so far IMO. I would have to delve further I to things in order to cement my concerns though and I can’t be arsed ATM.
My position on VAR has not changed. I’m still in favour of it but I want the reffing entity to be changed. I don’t think refs should be flying off to the middle east for paid vacations just before they officiate in matches versus rivals of said state owned clubs tho. That’s a conflict of interest and even if it weren’t, the scheduling issues that those refs encountered was highly unprofessional.
Going to the weekends games, I’m glad I didn’t bet. I’d absolutely have lost on that arsenal match. I see everyone is counting them out (especially their fans) .. look, it’s fair to be upset but the reality is that every league winning team has these kinds of results. Sometimes they cost you 2 points, sometimes 3.
Of Liverpool lose tonight, they’ll be ruled out. If they win they’ll have the ribbons tied on.
It’s just one match in the eye of the storm.Utd… Wtf are they up to? Plain weird.
Garnacho is one hell of a player. I’d base my attack around him, not try to shoehorn him in anywhere._____________________________

1st January 2024 at 10:34 am #211613Happy New Year to you numpties…
Mak, with regards to that yellow, I’ve seen a hell of a lot “less” be given a yellow for tugging back a player on a breakaway… absolute yellow card offence… maybe the 2nd yellow element had an effect on the ref’s thought process (afterall, we all do piller the refs to “ruining” games on occassions)… but I think if the boot was on the other foot, you’d be signing a different tune, especially if Pool dropped 3 points.

1st January 2024 at 4:19 pm #211615Mak, whilst I take the point of Poverty including of course the cost of living which effectively has been the icing on the cake to a recession back in 2008 compounded with 13 years of Tory cutbacks, even factoring in the most extreme of mitigating circumstances, there really in our society isn’t any room for theft and crime.
Supermarket workers are demoralized; this is not in their remit to be forced to manhandle shoplifters, but the Police have their backs to the wall with their own workload (so it seems). We do need solutions where the crimes are met with consequences.
Grealish is in a position to hire security and a property of such stature should be highly secured. Again, it doesn’t excuse invitations to just help yourself. We have really lost grip and this is a massive aspect of our lives along with our health service and public services we need to Reform and must be raised this year during elections and when candidates outline their Manifest.
Onto Liverpool, Mak, we’ve been here before, in fact, I sense de ja vu re Salah; and Mane when he was with us. Klopp has had many years of this and by now should have something in place. The difference what I recognize this time round is that we just don’t have any fringe strikers/gamechangers to come off the bench, ala Divock Origi. We’re lacking in this area and we’ve lost sight of the strive to bring in players beyond our first 11 and regular starters.
I’m happy where we are and not going too overboard. We know by now what the press etc are like. It is about 1 game at a time, respecting the opposition and earning 3 points. It’s quite scary as we’ve not reach that point of going into a bad run.
January could be a real defining month. We just need to be forward thinking and adapt where we can with our squad. If we can nab a Jan signing, then even better.

The funny thing is we did have the boot on the other foot (if it was a shirt pull that stopped a breakaway), because we had this against someone and he got a 2nd yellow that a reasonable amount of people around were saying wasn’t a yellow. It was though and the ref gave it.
If I can find it, I’ll take another look. I don’t remember thinking it was open of those breakaway fouls but… I could be wrong._____________________________

1st January 2024 at 4:39 pm #211618Well, Nil I can only give my own opinion on things but IMO the Tories are only ever working for the betterment of a significant minority. They sold your population down the Brexit path because it benefitted them and their friends, but it took away from the entire country’s economy and I don’t know what you can do about it but get slightly poorer every year.
If there is something to learn from the world over the last decade, it’s how vulnerable we are to mass manipulation. Of course we always were but it’s being exploited more and more.
As for us not having any room for crime, I think we’re too used to being so safe that we don’t realise that this is actually nothing and it might get a lot worse. It isn’t just Brexit though, not even close. I think that’s just a bit of a doubling effect for the UK, because we’re seeing a rise in thieving over here in Ireland also. Things get worrying when the theft is food-related. That’s people struggling to get by. I heard that some food donation charities are struggling because they are inundated with people looking for help.
Ireland is one of the richest countries in the world but the poverty margin is rising in a cost of living crisis, and we’re starting to see that point where people are being pushed over the edge.
I wouldn’t be too worried about workers in Asda, who would get fired if they tried to manhandle a thief anyway. Let Asda handle security, or just let the thief walk out with the goods. There is no in-between there. The thing I’d start to worry about is an escalation as more and more people feel the need to turn to crime in order to feed themselves or their families.
“We do need solutions where the crimes are met with consequences.”
It depends what they are stealing, surely. I don’t think I would want to throw someone in prison for stealing food. That’s me though, I know the law would disagree this me. I’d prefer to look at what’s causing it and maybe try to resolve that, rather than treat the growing symptom inappropriately.but less of that ya football 😛

1st January 2024 at 4:53 pm #211620Ya Nil, it could be a really defining month and more in a potentially negative way than a positive one.
Like, if do really well, it won’t be that defining, because City are going to start sweeping teams aside and they won’t stop. If we struggle without Salah though then our title contention could end this month. As for not having Origi. Good clutch player but not that great as a starter. I think we’re a little spoiled for choice really, as we will have Gakpo and Jota there to come in and as much as I love Origi, Jota is twice the player he was. Origi scored some incredibly important goals but Jota can be trusted to score as a starter. He’s a player who I think is missing something in order to be nailed on as a starter for us full time but a great backup player who I think almost all other teams would only love to have as a squad player.
It’s weird because as I’ve talked about this, I feel less worried now. We’re so spoiled for choice to have Diaz, Nunez, Gakpo and Jota all ready to go when Salah heads off.
I guess it’s just that we’ve seen some of these players struggling for goals recently.
Maybe if we settled down a bit better and started moving the ball around at a higher tempo, these players might find themselves in positions to receive the ball and score?_____________________________

1st January 2024 at 5:03 pm #211621Mak, a bit of good news I’ve learned is that we’ve recalled a youngster back from Dundee (left back) and also Fabio Carvalho. I like him; reportedly, he’s not done as well elsewhere but we need options whilst Salah’s away. I’m thinking 4-2-4 already.
Once we get a number 6 and Matip’s replacement, we’ll be where we need to be.
Looking forward to Tonight 🙂

1st January 2024 at 5:10 pm #211623Totally agree with your example re Asda workers Mak; There area I used to work in which is a small town, all retailers from Boots to Superdrug, to Iceland were regularly hit. The Sainsburys there was losing into hundreds of £s worth of Spirits.
Our workplace a couple of weeks ago donated to a Food Bank and the retailer I work for regularly do. I do feel sad for those having to use food banks. I wish that we focused on homeless people.
There are so many problems our country and society is experiencing, it gets me depressed thinking about them. Maybe 2024 will be a definitive year for change, who knows…..

1st January 2024 at 5:25 pm #211625Since Cameron, we have had a bunch of assholes in charge who threw each other under the bus and didn’t have any cohesion to help the country.
Problem is, that dickhead in charge of labour is no better, so there isn’t many decent alternatives.
Brexit would have been done well, if people actually stuck together. It became party politics within all the political parties for years, which resulted in a big mess and no direction which helped the general public.

1st January 2024 at 6:17 pm #211628Losing all that trade is never going to be easy to deal with.
Ya, stop voting in people who are only looking after the 1%. They quite literally killed people by pushing them off of Disability Allowance/Benefit (I don’t know what it’s called there).
These people don’t give a shit about the poor and they will make your life hell just to make a tiny bit more money for themselves. There have to be alternatives. There have to be reasonable people who are capable of government.
More and more, the options just seem to be total nutbags._____________________________

1st January 2024 at 7:26 pm #211633Things got a bit political while I wasn’t watching… here’s my comments for what they’re worth. I’ve had the privilage to live in 5 different countries over the years (anything more than 2 years!) and 3 of those countries were what you would call “2 party” systems (and that would include the UK) and 2 countries have what I would call Scandi-models (or what you pommies would call “hung-parliments”)… and the evidence I lived in would suggest that countries that have the Scandi-models are considerably better countries to live in.
The weather sucks during winter (it’s minus 21 at the moment) but Finland is without a doubt got its head screwed on politically with the Scandi-model and other things here that don’t happen in the UK. Just to give you some of the highlights… the tax system is structured in such a way it is very, very hard for both companies and people to cheat, they all pay their fair share and everybody (both corporate and personal) have their taxes “free” to the public (name ’em and shame ’em policy). That’s the first thing that the UK doesn’t have.
Now you have a country where everybody is paying their fare share, and a permamnent “hung-parliment”… this means no singular party ever has enough control to promote their very own “mandate”, so in order to keep a seat at the main table, all parties have to agree on things that the vast majority of Finnish residents agree on… this would include one of the best “NHS” systems in the world, a free education upto and including university system which is regulary ranked in the Top3 in the world, an infrastucture that is modern and works, a well-funded police force (which takes no shit from anybody) and very, very low crime rates… basically things which benifit everybody regardless of race/color/religious et….
Not saying it’s perfect, but comparing the 5 countries I’ve lived in (UK, US, Australia, Denmark & Finland) it’s easily top of that list (and Denmark, another “Scandi-model”, is 2nd)…

1st January 2024 at 7:53 pm #211635Let me tell you about my little monkeys school for another example…
I’ve never seen her in classroom with more than 20 kids in it, and up until grade 6, there was always two teachers in every class (1 teacher and 1 “trainee” teacher to be fair). Every year she gets a whole new set of scool books (which she keeps) and when she started grade 6, the school issued her a laptop… and this is for every kid!!!
The school building itself is less than 10 years old, and has all the “things” you would expect a modern school to have, I think the only thing it is missing is a swimming pool, and that’s very probably because it’s about 200 yards from the towns swimming pool anyway…
And I’ll tell you this about the “attitude” the Finnish education system has, and this is a true story. I was talking to techers asssitant called Ian (from Wales but was a West Ham fan for unknown reasons), basically half-complaining/half-wondering why my monkey literaly has 5 differnet start times and 5 different finishing times each week (start times can be anywhere between 8:15 and 9:45 & finishing times 1:15 & 2:45). This is not quite word for word, but the simple version was the start times are staggered, as are lunch times, so it’s easier and safer to get the kids in and out the school, and lunch times were staggered because it’s easier to serve the kids in batchs of 30/40/50 rather than the whole school at once (which does make sense if you think about it), and they have to stagger the start times so everybody gets early/lates otherwise parents complain if they got all lates etc… so everybody gets good/bads ones…
When I mentioned this was all a bit of a pain in the Arsenal for parents and work etc… he laughed, looked me straight in the eye and said “we’re not here to make your life easer, we’re here to give your kids the best education possible!”
