Liverpool recorded almost 8 in expected goals which is insane. A draw would have been very harsh had Newcastle gone on to equalise without the pen. But it’s irrelevant now.
Newcastle must be starting to think about replacing Howe by now. He was always nothing more than a stop gap considering their ambitions. Potter? Conte? Could Zidane be tempted? Would be a big statement, at least in terms of profile.

1st January 2024 at 10:31 pm #211753I don’t think it’s corrupt CM. I just think it’s poor officiating. The VAR team had every chance to ask for it to be looked at. Corruption would require too many people to be in on the fix for it to be feasible imo.

1st January 2024 at 10:31 pm #211754I tell you what lads, if Dermot Gallagher says it wasn’t a penalty then I’ll put my hands up and say that he’s also an idiot! π
Nah I’ll give it.
If he gives some weak af response and suggests it might have been this or that, then all bets are off.

1st January 2024 at 10:32 pm #211755Dive or no dive Jota certainly helped change the game. We actually played some very good stuff and would have been out of sight by HT if we could finish the chances.
Shout out to some of less glamorous players who again did well, Jones, Gomez and Endo.

1st January 2024 at 10:37 pm #211756I think Howe is struggling with injuries in the busy Christmas schedule as well as raising expectations on himself from last season. Personally, I’d keep him for the moment as I think he’s a good manager.

1st January 2024 at 10:40 pm #211757Gomez really did well alright Threeps. We should be in serious trouble with both Robertson and Tsimikas out but we’re grand with him in there. I really love seeing Konate play for us too, as Trent definitely gets more freedom with him. Trent didn’t start so great for me but at times there he was like Gerrard.
I don’t wanna sound like I am hating on Nunez but ya please can we bench him and start Jota? If we’re going to play Nunez then I think it’s got to be on the wing, he’s got no awareness for timing his runs, and he shoots “centre mass” (if you know what I mean) too much, so being int he centre is no good for us and it’s no good for his confidence.
While Salah is gone, if we’re gonna start him then play him on the right instead of Salah and see how he gets on because I tell you that I wouldn’t mind seeing Salah through the middle a bit.

1st January 2024 at 10:45 pm #211758The more I look at it, the less I think it’s a penalty.
I’ll try to get some good footage of it later. I’d really appreciate more angles. The ones they are showing in the highlights are terrible.
It does look like a lot of what I was complaining about (Jota being put off balance) might be him landing a bit shit after avoiding the keeper.as I said though… more angles needed (If I bother)… I think I’d be happy to call him a diving-cheating bastard and move on.

2nd January 2024 at 11:16 am #211762That would be fun!!!
But vaguely seriously, I wonder who’s going to blink first between YooUtd and Bone Saws? You would fancy both of them to want new managers sooner than later with the way both teams are going… and with the exception of Conte, what other “top draw” managers are there? I really can’t see either club going for Potter… or are they going to try and poach somebody’s existing manager? Se Zebri at Brighton perhaps?

2nd January 2024 at 11:32 am #211763Xabi Alonso will be sought after with his record with Bayer Leverkusen but will he move to the premier league yet? Not sure the Liverpool connection would help going to Utd but maybe Newcastle if they continue to stutter.

2nd January 2024 at 11:38 am #211764It was expected, Rooney has won only 40 of his 153 matches as a manager across spells at Derby County, D.C. United and Birmingham, totalling a win percentage of just 26.1%.

2nd January 2024 at 12:07 pm #211766Alonso’s a good shout… but for some reason I think he’ll stay where he is until the Real Madrid gig is open.

2nd January 2024 at 12:21 pm #211767Alonso is doing great, top of a one team league and playing very nice football. He won’t move mid-season he has a chance to become a legend, but I guess he could go in the summer if BM hoover up all his good players.
Coincidently his contract expires the same time as Klopps…

2nd January 2024 at 1:52 pm #211770I dont think howe is getting as much heat as Eth as newcastle actually work hard and can play. Utd cant. They look terrible . Utd really do look a poor team.
Newcastle worked their asses off lsdt bight. You have utd players not even running. Newcastle massively over achieved last season.
Both teams have had terrible injuries. Even with all theirs, Newcastle still played the same way.utd just dont look like a team. I cant believe how bad they were v forest and west ham.also newcastle played the same 11 for weeks and its taken its toll.
Id give both managers more time. Get player’s back etc.

2nd January 2024 at 2:15 pm #211772Alonso is still very early on at Leverkusen. I can’t see anything convincing him to leave before the season is done and Newcastle might want someone a bit sooner. They have loads of money but I can’t see them being able to get whoever they want. I mean who’s actually available that they could get?
I dunno like, Howe is one of those kinda outside chances that he turns into a top manager and Newcastle were very impressive for a while. Perhaps stick with him, or they are left with taking chances on someone else.
A manager who popped into my head yesterday has kinda drifted into obscurity, Andre Villas-Boas. I don’t know if he’ll ever come good but I think that’s the type of manager that they could get. If I were them I’d probably stick with Howe til the summer and hope he turns things around, or that someone of a higher standard becomes available between then and now.

2nd January 2024 at 2:18 pm #211773As for Alonso, maybe he is one for the future but I don’t want to look past Klopp and Pep. My thoughts are that hopefully, they’ll continue to feel passionate in fighting for this project. I don’t want to look at who might be next and I don’t want the press to be asking it, putting those thoughts into Klopp’s head. Until Klopp says he’s leaving, I’m happy to see Alonso carry on wherever.
It is very interesting to see him doing well and long may it continue. I wouldn’t expect him to not take certain jobs just so he could hope to land the LFC job, but he is a more suitable candidate than Gerrard and I’m not even slightly surprised.
Bests of luck to him.
Klopp to stay for many more years though please._____________________________

2nd January 2024 at 2:22 pm #211774Sean, I know I saw an angle during the live stream that showed Jota was fouled. The angles afterward just weren’t good at all. I would go back and try to find it but I’m happy enough with us just winning it and we deserved the win. Newcastle weren’t robbed etc.
It is refreshing to hear the keeper saying that it was a penalty though. That’s a bit like the ASrsenal player last time saying that it was a penalty. Fair dues to them.
