I raelly enjoyed both games yesterday, the Everton-Wolves game and the Arsenal-Spurs. Exciting as both games were, however, there were an awful lot of errors in both which made for exciting games, but I’d be surprised if either Spurs or Arsenal finish too close to City and Liverpool. Arsenal clearly have a major problem at the back (David Luiz? Please!!), and Spurs should have been able to close that game out after being 2 up.
The real talking point of the weekend for me was Villa’s disallowed goal against Palace. It was an absolute shocker by Kevin Friend, and if you were a Villa fan, player or manager you would feel very hard done to. If VAR is meaant to erase ‘clear and obvious’ refereeing errors, it didn’t do it’s job there. Maybe it was unable to because the ref had already blown his whistle, but if VAR couldn’t award the goal, could it have awarded the penalty for Cahill’s challenge on Grealish. While I accept that error would have happened pre-VAR, shouldn’t this system that is meant to erase mistakes have done something about the biggest one I have seen so far this season?
And finally, Lucky and 442, leave it out lads! Just agree to differ, eh, and leave the bickering to those on ‘the other site’. You both make good and interesting points, they are just different!!

2nd September 2019 at 5:42 pm #46947Yup, nothing wrong with the Villa equaliser.
Let’s hope it’s a one off in error.

2nd September 2019 at 5:47 pm #46948Hightown, thats exactly it mate, Chelsea have been bang average but the games are so exciting because of all the errors being made. Maybe the pace of the game and the amount of high pressure is leading to more mistakes in general and more exciting games. Alan hansen would probably just say players dont know how to defend any more but it makes for better games.
P.s, I have left it there now, my last post was my closing one on that mate.

2nd September 2019 at 5:58 pm #46950Lucky, I only saw the MOTD highlights of your game on Saturday, but my uneducated take on it, and indeed Chelsea so far, is that there is little to be too despondent about. Against United you were the better team for much of the game, well certainly the first half, against Norwich you got the win, and against Sheff Utd on Saturday you just failed to kill them off, a bit like Spurs yesterday, but for 45 minutes you battered them. I forget who your other game was against, I’m afraid, but you were arguably the better team against us in the Super Cup, and Mount and Abraham must have exceeded expectations so far…and you’ve got Hudson-Odoi and RLC, as well as Kante to come back in. As I say, I wouldn’t be worried too much, though obviously you’d like more points! The downsides for you, in my humble opinion, are Zouma and Pulisic. Zouma is nowhere near top quality (why isn’t Christiansen playing?) and Pulisic has shown very little so far, though it is early days.

2nd September 2019 at 6:12 pm #46951We are playing such a high tempo hightown that come second half our players just cant keep it up. I think thats when the inexperience really shows and we lose control of games.
Im not pessimistic about it to be fair, we can finish 4th this year, It is a real possibility, lots of quality to come back in to the side too as you point out.

2nd September 2019 at 6:20 pm #46952So why isn’t Christiansen playing instead of Zouma? And I forgot in my earlier post, Rudiger, of course

2nd September 2019 at 6:47 pm #46954I agree re zouma, but it is possible Lamps thinks even less of Christensen, I was surprised to see him dropped on weekend and tomori given his debut. Rudiger has been injured too.
I think Pulisic is doing alright, his movement, dribbling and running is creating space and opportunities for others. Thought he did ok against pool, and although ruled out, the goal he scored showed a lot of quality. Still, with pedro injured, hudson-odoi out, and willian not match fit, I think Pulisic had to be played. Pulisic doesnt have the experience and quality around him that would ideally be there when bedding him in as he is very raw still, but same can be said for mount, tammy, tomori and all the other youngsters we are relying on this year.
There are far more positives than negatives for me, I am hoping to see some minor adjustments to how we set up in possession so that we are more secure when turned over. We are starting games so well and taking leads, we just need to be smarter and learn to slow the tempo and take control of games when we can.

3rd September 2019 at 1:18 am #46955AnonymousI seem to be the only one who thinks the ref got in right for the Villa disallowed goal. Grealish was, in my opinion throwing himself on the ground before any negligible contact was made. The “contact” was on his left leg , yet its the way he throws out the right.. it’s a Klinsmann job.
I’m sick of players making a mad dash for the penalty box and the second they’ve reached their goal, it’s swan dive. That’s not playing the game as it’s meant to be played.

3rd September 2019 at 1:19 am #46956AnonymousLD, all signs for Pulisic are indeed good. At times Chelsea have looked proper dangerous and others, a bit disorganized. In time this will come good.

3rd September 2019 at 10:37 am #46960mak, I agree but its not as though our good or bad periods are sporadic. There is a pattern to it. We start games with high tempo and intensity we could cause any team problems….for 30 mins that is. After fatigue sets in we lose control and thats when the youth and inexperience in our team really shows.

3rd September 2019 at 11:51 am #46968Mak. .I disagree with you about Grealish. I reckon he was moving at pace, got a little shove in the back which when you’re moving at pace like he was can make you lose your balance, and was then blocked by Cahill. As he was falling he managed to squeeze the ball through to Lansbury. I genuinely didn’t see a dive, but in fact saw 2 fouls ?? in my opinion the very least Villa should have got was a free kick just outside the box.Failing that a penalty for Cahills foul, and failing that a goal!!

3rd September 2019 at 12:01 pm #46970Agree with the 2 fouls leading up to it, but Wee Jack went down like he was at the Olympics… the fact that they scored a goals moments later was more by luck than judgment, because I’m willing to bet if they didn’t score he would have been screaming like a tart for the peno…
We can argue till the cows come home about were the “first offence occurred” and were the ref blew-up to stop the play, but the fact Wee Jack was going for gold in the middle of it all is pretty indisputable in my opinion.

3rd September 2019 at 12:40 pm #46973Grealish made a pass and didn’t claim for a pen. It was an horrendous decision by Friend to blow as he did.
