Banjo, who do you think will finish above pool this season? I say only city are odds on to do so and its tough to call between arsenal and pool for second. My respect for the experience of pool gives them the edge imo.

4th September 2023 at 9:47 am #209312Very open for 2nd place despite their bad game this weekend don’t throw Newcastle away, Spurs can also do it but like Chelsea and United dont have proper strikers. City could drop points or go on a bad run should they get injuries which is always possible. However Arsenal are favourites for 2nd place.

4th September 2023 at 9:52 am #209314Yeah it’s early days. It’s surprising how easily two of our signings have bedding in. They seem happy and enjoying their football. The worst part of the summer period re the transfer window is behind us. We probably have saved the 100 mil to put into better use.
I can’t take for granted any fixture; even Luton Town!

4th September 2023 at 10:00 am #209316I think United should stick with Rashford up the top and then nominate one regular starter as a link up player. There are plenty of candidates like Garnacho, Anthony, Sancho.
What I am not seeing though is a settled 11. Have the same players been selected for more than one game? Anthony does try hard as with Garnacho. Maybe some help needed in formulating a system and being placed with more experienced and established players.

4th September 2023 at 10:08 am #209317The draw at Chelsea was a good result but poor performance, we were exposed many times. Didn’t see the Bournemouth game so cannot comment. Newcastle was odd as we looked to be caught again like the Chelsea game until we had a man sent off and actually looked more solid. Klopp started that game with the wrong tactics but changed them and introduced the right subs at the right time. Yesterday we were very good, as Sean says first time for a while. Szoboszlai looks a great addition.
Utd look a bit all over the place, as do Chelsea but I think we could have all predicted that with all their signings. If they click they should be good. Arsenal look OK but I don’t get Havertz as a signing, he just looks slow and no fight. Spurs have started well with a new manager but as we know they will spurs it all up sooner or later, they are no threat for 2nd.
Newcastle have been poor, 3 losses already before the demands of the CL stretches their squad. Could the pressure start to build already for Howe?

4th September 2023 at 10:19 am #209319Definitely won’t be like how it was back in 2003 haha. There were characters back then like Ray Parlour and Martin Keown. Lot of history between these two including points docked some years back. The good thing back then was that people didn’t take it too far and there was no social media.

4th September 2023 at 10:23 am #209320The first 20 mins v Bournemouth is the worst Iโve seen us play for a longtime.
Itโs such early days. 4 games in. Really difficult to judge anyone yet only city who will walk this league

4th September 2023 at 11:20 am #209322As Sean says, it’s still so early. Aside from City, nobody has been great consistently. Spurs are very much in a honeymoon period which will wear off. The rest are so inconsistent. I doubt anyone will challenge City so it’s already their title to lose.

4th September 2023 at 11:50 am #209323As I say, I just look at the attacking credentials of the teams. A good attack will not win you a trophy on its own but it will get you bloody close. When we signed Torres it got us to the closest in years and we got even closer with Suarez and Sturridge. And the front 3 of Salah, Firmino & Mane finally got us there (of course helped with the defensive acquisitions).
City’s attack is there for all to see but Liverpool now have more attacking midfielders so I think we’ll be a lot more robust. It’s the defence that’s the concern, but if we keep attacking well that will still alleviate some of the pressure on the defence.
Spurs may have some hiccups, but the attacking way they play will still serve them well. Arteta seems to overcomplicating things at Arsenal for me but they still lack a wow factor up top I think. Chelsea still don’t have enough up top to threat for me, its to be seen how much Hรธjlund can do at Utd but even if he does well still not sure they’ve got enough to seriously threat. Newcastle have had a difficult start with their opening fixtures and the CL will obviously congest things but again, just don’t think they still have enough up top to threat.
As to why there seems a dearth of attacking talent at some clubs, I just do wonder if this modern fashion of trying to bring in young prospects is actually putting a lot of pressure on them or do some just not get enough game time? I mean how much game time is Palmer going to get at Chelsea? Jude Bellingham couldn’t have made a better move going to Dortmund because it was still a big club in Germany and he was always going to get game time which was perfect for his development.

4th September 2023 at 12:14 pm #209324Nil, I hope Utd start Hojlund going forward, looked sharp up top, pace and a physicality to him. Gave Gabriel a tough time and should have had a penalty when Gabriel took him out in the box. Promising cameo at the end. Rashford needs to stick on the left to be effective.

4th September 2023 at 1:12 pm #209325Young Dane looks a player from his brief cameo but he will be judged on goals. Huge potential there to be a top player
Really in two minds about utd keeper. Unbelievable with the ball at his feet but he just doesnโt fill me with confidence
Early days for him and interesting to see how he gets on

4th September 2023 at 2:01 pm #209326I wish we didn’t have to rely on Hojlund so soon Alfie but there’s no other choice. Rashford can’t really play there and Martial is just not someone who can be relied upon.
Onana will make mistakes Sean, but I think there are more pros than cons. He’ll get caught off his line and get caught trying to dribble past attackers and the vultures will be after him. From what I’ve seen though, he’s an incredibly confident guy who will not be phased by it when it happens. We simply had to move on from De Gea.

4th September 2023 at 5:15 pm #209327I donโt think he makes many mistakes on the ball Ed, heโs like a young Glenn hoddle, just other parts of his game. Still relatively young for a keeper aswell.

4th September 2023 at 5:56 pm #209329Onana should play right back when we need a goal!
I agree Ed, Iโd rather not have to rely on Hรธjlund, but he is part of the squad and (on a 25 minute showing, looks far more of a threat than Martial, so he needs to start.
The ironic thing is, if we play him like we did Sancho in his first season the press would destroy him. Might as well play and get used to the PL.
