29th April 2019 at 5:19 pm #39239It seems Poncho is pissed with Eddy… π
Poch said: βI need to again repeat after five years the same situation. I would love to win the FA Cup or Carabao Cup like the Champions League or the Premier League or another competition.
βThe problem is to stop manipulating my words, with all my affection to you. If you ask me if to put the club in the next level and behave like Real Madrid and Barcelona I think itβs not about winning one cup but always being in a competition like the Champions League and being a real contender for the Champions League or the Premier League or trying to win the Premier League. That is going to give you the possibility to reach the last stage, where I think Tottenham is going to be one day.
βIf win a Carabao Cup or FA Cup, of course, it is going to be fantastic for everyone but it is only to lift a trophy. It does not lift you to the next level like Manchester United, City, Real Madrid or Barcelona. That is the point. But of course, I am desperate to win a trophy, like the FA Cup or Carabao Cup. We were fighting for that in the last five years, we have come close but unlucky and we will try next time.β

29th April 2019 at 5:29 pm #39240Looks like Poch has been reading Footydebate and wants his name back in the frame for the Utd or Real jobs after both their latest appointments look doomed!

29th April 2019 at 9:23 pm #39242“Kylie-Only Β£300m? Dear God,how much have YooUtd wasted since Fergie? And how many GDP of Greece has Pepe played with @ City??”
Mav today @ 1;56pm.
And there you have it mate, a prime example of, it’s not how much you spend but how well you spend it.
I’m not sure any United player bought since SAF left is now worth more than the purchase price but at City…………………….._____________________________

30th April 2019 at 8:23 am #39243That’s the key gj, spending well in the transfer market and whilst not every transfer will be 100% right succesful dealings in the transfer market and getting the majority right are a trait of Guardiola, Klopp and Pochettino.
It is also no accident that all three of Guardiola, Klopp and Pochettino are the longest serving Managers within the top 10 Clubs in the PL.

30th April 2019 at 8:49 am #39244I have to disagree there Pupstar!! Poncho, as much as I love him, does have a question mark against him with regards to transfers, with more misses than hits I feel. Maybe some of that is done the budget he has had during various transfer windows, and has perhaps maybe been forced to shop in the bargin buckets rather than Harrod’s, but he’s bought more than a few “distinctly average” players at the Spuds.

30th April 2019 at 10:20 am #39246Chucky, I’m not so sure.
Poch has never been able to make a game changing signing like Van Dijk because he hasn’t had the funds but he’s made plenty of decent signings imo albeit there will be the odd poor one in there as there is for every Manager.
Even in the Summer of 2017 when he was last active the signings as they stand now were all decent. Whilst both United and Chelsea have bought poorly in the transfer market over the last few years which I think is primarily down to the managerial revolving door at both Clubs.

30th April 2019 at 12:38 pm #39253Just on a slight side note, although the Liverpool recent big signings have been mentioned in one form of discussion or another, I am one of the living proof either in this forum or another in expressing my dissatisfaction towards our Owners.
This has been a long rebuilding journey above all since we were rescued from Hicks and Gillette back in 2010 and out of that, Jurgen Klopp has been our 3rd Manager.
We have cried for years in wanting a centre-back like Van Dijk; the time Man United had Vidic and Ferdinand at their peak.
I don’t at all think one second, we’re able to splash on players, the same way Man City or Man United can. Those funds have to come from somewhere and they can take years of relatively healthy Balance Sheets to allow that.
I’m thankful and our most vital job I would say is to preserve what we have and elevate ourselves from that.

30th April 2019 at 1:24 pm #39255I think you make a good point Nil about the importance of Clubs having the right owners to achieve success but the problem is no matter how good the owners there are no instant fixes.
Personally I would say that Fenway have been one of the best owners we’ve seen in football they have a sports ownership history as well as a history of winning too.
They’ve reduced the Club debt, improved the Stadium and are in the process of building a new state of the art Training Ground have appointed a brilliant Manager who they’ve backed in the transfer market as far as they possibly could and haven’t yet taken a penny out of the Club as far as I’m aware.
The net result of all that is that Liverpool are challenging for the major owners again I’m not sure owners come much better than Fenway.

I give you:
Kevin Wimmer
Clinton N’Jie
Benamin Stambouli
Vincent Janssen (bless ’em, doesn’t lack for effort!)
Federico Fazio
De Andre Yedlin
George Nkoudou
Pau Lopez
Serge AurierThat’s 9 from 23 that were utterly “misses”, I won’t bother with the “maybes” or “decent” signings…

30th April 2019 at 2:26 pm #39264Chucky, I wouldn’t completely write Aurier off although he can be a head case at times.
But Alderwield and Dele AlIi etc etc far outweigh the failures imo and of course how many of the signings in Poch’s tenure both good and bad were actually his and not the Scouting departments the younger unknown ones were probably the Scouting Department including probably Dele Alli.
Spurs have had a smart strategy somewhat driven by neccesity of signing young players with potential Dele Alli, Trippier, Ben Davies etc overall I would say under Poch given Spurs financial limitations they’ve done well under Poch.
The key here for Spurs imo is patience with Poch and longevity and not the managerial revolving door strategy we’ve seen at Chelsea and United.
Blimey I’m beginning to sound like a Spuds fan.?
