“they might as well just put it in the cabinet at Etihad”
We brought the race down to the last day, missing it by a point. To say that we have absolutely no chance is a ridiculous statement. You might as well stop following the club man.
ADDITIONAL : I say the above only because this is your general stance with us, European Champions. You’re giving the club no credit at all by offhandedly writing them off when they’ve nearly done it just a few months ago. I’ve added this text cause I realise that this might come across harsher than meant.
So while it’s not necessarily shots fired. between first Nil and his “poor me and my failure of a club over the last few decades” routine and this, it just seems like people aren’t giving the current phase much or any credit at all.
You can not as a fan watch your team get 97 points the previous season and then just say fuck it, 0% chance of them winning it next year. Well, you can but that’s where I would tell them that maybe they need to step away from the sport for a while. I just don’t get the down and out stuff man. I think it must come down to something else because I like you personally and your previous input. As you stated a few times last season, your enjoyment of the game hasn’t been what it once was, well perhaps you need to consider this because after the season just gone, if you can’t enjoy that then you’ll not enjoy this one either (which will likely be less so).

26th August 2019 at 7:54 am #46354Only saw the highlights of the Utd game but have to say that first goal was shocking defending, looked like school kid stuff! Why was there such a big gap between centre backs?
Liverpool played well. Have to give a big shout out to Matip who was superb. A year ago I really did not trust him as I thought he was slow to react and not aggressive enough but he has really improved and made me change my opinion. Even scored a superb header! I still think Gomez will be the long term partner for VvD but at the moment I have no issues seeing Matip in the starting 11.

26th August 2019 at 8:27 am #46355Meanwhile in Germany…
https://www1.wdr.de/sport/fussball/erste-bundesliga/fc-dom-andacht-100.html
4500 fans squeeze in Cologne Cathedral to have a sing song prior and pray for a good season prior to their first home match. Not sure if they were looking for divine intervention, and if they were it didn’t work as Köln FC lost 3-1 against BvB.

26th August 2019 at 9:45 am #46358Dunno Adders, answers on a postcard to Poncho, House of Pain (one why or the other), N17… 🙂
I’m guessing Poncho thinks Wee Erik isn’t 100% committed to the cause and is “pretending” he isn’t really there so he get’s used to the idea, trying different formations… I’m more worried about why he isn’t starting Jan the Man (probably the same reason!) as both goals in the Villa/Castle games you could question Dirty Sanchez’z positioning. Both games we let in a sloppy early goal, both games the oppo’s got the lead and shut-up shop, but yesterday it didn’t work, despite 80% possession… and at least one clear cut peno that VAR didn’t/wouldn’t/couldn’t award after the man in the middle bottled it and sent it upstairs.
(And odd’s are Erik is leaving I reckon!).

26th August 2019 at 10:50 am #46360I reserve full judgement on Lampard’s Chelsea until Christmas as we need to see how Lampard deals with the inevitable after honeymoon period that Chelsea will experience at some point. However, Chelsea do currently look a more cohesive side than I thought they would and even as a non Chelsea fan, it is wonderful and refreshing to see two academy players who have been at the club since they were kids now doing the business up top for the club. Even if they have poor games, you know these two will never stop fighting, and that’s what clubs should be about and should be founded upon. The goals at the weekend were very impressive. If Lampard can prove himself tactically, can grind out wins and be a figure that commands authority from the players point of view, Chelsea could well have a good season. Long way to go, but so far so good.

26th August 2019 at 11:01 am #46362AnonymousAdlab & Chucky, Anything but 100% buy in to Poch’s ethos and you don’t figure for him. I sort of get it but still find it hard to watch lesser players start when you have Jan and Christian on the bench .
It will be weeks before Spurs bring back Dele and Sess and find the best positions for Ndombele and Lo Celso and by that time City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and United will be long gone, it’s going to be a tough season at WHL_____________________________

26th August 2019 at 11:04 am #46363I think the majority of Chelsea fans were delighted with the Lampard appointment especially given all of the circumstances and he shares a special relationship with the match going fans which was evident again at Norwich and he will be supported no matter what by them because of the enormous credit he has in the bank with them but Chelsea fans are also liking what they’re seeing.
I don’t think Lampard can be truly judged until he’s had a chance to mould the team as he wants it to be and plug any gaps that he identifies and he needs next Summer’s transfer window to do that.
The results haven’t been great but the football has been very promising and there is still 4 or 5 players to come back from injury. I think there’s every chance of us being in and around the top 6 and if any of the more likely too 4 Clubs mess up who knows.
Mount in particular has seized his chance with both hands and imo looks like a player and not just for Chelsea.
But as you rightly say Mikus a long way to go but so far so good.

26th August 2019 at 11:17 am #46364Dunno Bricky, kind of agree with your first part, but I don’t now about the 2nd. I think it was more of a bad day at the office rather than any long-term problem. We’ve had issues with so-called lesser teams turning up and playing 5-5-0 with long diagonal balls over the top for about 18 months now. Nothing new there. Short of a certain Mr Messi to run at them, not a lot else you can do other than try a million crosses and quick neat 1-2’s around the box. Perhaps a few more pot-shots at the goalie, didn’t see to many of them in the 2nd half (missed the first, thankfully!).
I think the bigger issue is not having a big-lump to come off the bench to help with route one when panic stations sets in. Harry get’s double teamed and, the likes of Lucas, Lamala, Song, Dele, or even Wee Erik, aren’t going to win many headers for the rest to feed of the 2nd balls… that’s the bigger problem I feel… need a Fernando or even a Carrol… hell bells, give Parrot some bloody game time, see if his elbows work!!

26th August 2019 at 12:30 pm #46366Mak, who said I didn’t enjoy winning the C/L? I said many times last season the cups were our best chance of winning a title. As I continually say mate it’s quality in depth why no one will top city again. They strengthened we didn’t & they finished above us last season. They have got around 100 pts for a few consecutive seasons we got 97 once whilst playing the best we possibly could. Do you think we will get around that again? Do you think we will only lose once again? I certainly don’t, I think we might get late 80’s maybe early 90’s & city will once again get around 100 again. I’m not making this up, yes it’s my opinion & you might not agree but We will wait & see how it pans out.
As for taking a break, I don’t post much as I’m not overly invested any more with football so I just have a read & post once in a while. I hope your right mate but time will tell.
Talk soon bud, take care._____________________________

26th August 2019 at 1:21 pm #46367I sincerely hope you don’t take a break Oz as I really enjoy reading your posts.
I think there’s a world of difference between no chance of winning the title and City being the likely title winners due to the strength of their squad. Long way to go and lots can happen.
Anyway I’ve got a sneaky feeling myself for Chelsea.??? Cheers 9’s

26th August 2019 at 1:24 pm #46368AnonymousMikus… said before the pre season got underway our defence would be problematic. Should notes that palace go to old Trafford and Cahill plays – they sneak a win.
I do like Christiansen… looks very cultured and has very good reading of the game. Just dawdles sometimes and switches off.
Zouma is more an action man defender in the jt mould and I wince every time he jumps and lands. He needs to learn to fall properly. Jury still out for me on him.
Rudiger will add more pace – never seen a defender take on an opposing team like rudiger does when he applies the afterburners…
Just think we’re too expansive. We’ve lost two champions league and Europa cup defenders in Cahill and Luiz and Emerson is bedding into the side. Far better than Alonso who offers a very good attacking outlet, defensively not great.
Dave is one of the best full backs in the game and once he’s back into right back mode will be solid as a rock. He’s reworking his angles out playing in a position he originally came to the club as all those moons ago.
Add the French Titan Kante in there and things will tighten up. But for now, at least we’re startig to score goals. Fully expect mount and Abraham to have dips in form and for Batshuayi and giroud to step in and deliver when they do.
Lots of positive signs, lots of love for Lampard. Fingers crossed when the dip in form happens we find a way through it. Will be happy with a top 8 finish and I’m less gloomy about the season.
Looking at the first two matchdays and bar Liverpool and city, everyone else is fighting to establish form. International break coming up so form will pick up after that I guess for the top 8 clubs.

26th August 2019 at 1:31 pm #46369Chucky, I don’t think you can put it down to a bad day at the office Spurs were poor v Villa, poor yesterday and we’re very very very fortunate to escape from the Etihad with a point.
There’s a bit wrong at Spurs at the moment imo and it probably needs the transfer window in Europe to come to a conclusion and getting Eriksen and Vertongen back in the team again to start sorting it out.
Currently Spurs seems short of ideas and creativity and the lack of challenges from the Spurs players for the whole build up to the Newcastle goal was criminal.
Having said all of that I would be surprised if Spurs don’t put in a performance next weekend v Arsenal.

26th August 2019 at 1:33 pm #46370Bloody international breaks…
My boys never seem to get going until a proper run of games so I always viewed the opening 3 games (or 4 this year for some reason) as a bit of a crap-shoot. Had myself mentally prepared and hopeful for 6 from 12 from those 4 games, considering away to City and the Goonies. Starting to think okay, maybe 7 points before yesterday’s kick-off… obviously still a chance for 7 points but those dropped against Castle was a real kick in the goolies…
More worrying is the complete lack of a plan B now, as I mentioned earlier, changing players almost like for like, so we’ve got fresh-legs to run at the defensive brick wall in front of us seems a bit of a waste of time in my book…
Just want the bloody window to close!!!

26th August 2019 at 1:39 pm #46371Puppy, performances like yesterday are a dime a dozen over the last 18 months or so against the lesser teams. We’ve gotten away with it more often than not with a little bit of “magic” from somebody (except for the last third of last season perhaps!).
Lucas, as much as I love him, is not a starter, a brilliant impact sub. Same with Lamela, shouldn’t be near the starting 11 when we have a fully fit squad and only on the bench to help hand out water bottles.
It seemed to me, the only way we were likely to get a point yesterday, let alone 3, was long crosses into the box yet we only really had Harry there to aim for and he was double teamed.
I would have thought Poncho would have learned by now, but when playing teams outside the Top 6, especially at home, needs 2 out and out strikers up top!
