26th March 2023 at 3:06 pm #205585Never realised Nagelsmann is only 35!
Also being reported Nagelsmann’s girlfriend, a reporter at Bild, caused trust issues in the dressing room.

26th March 2023 at 11:01 pm #205586Well that’s the first part done. Surely odds on now that Nagelsmann will take charge in the summer?
Official: Antonio Conte and Tottenham part ways by mutual consent β heβs no longer the coach π¨βͺοΈ #THFC

27th March 2023 at 8:05 am #205589Probably sensible not to rush into an immediate appointment at Spurs it gives whoever takes over the pre season to get their ideas in place.

27th March 2023 at 9:38 am #205590Naglsman is not the right choice. There is no right choice with spurs. They have tried and tested every kind of manager under the sun.
Club is a right mess.

27th March 2023 at 10:13 am #205592Sean, on the nail mate with your last words.
How many managers have they tried and Top Names too. Is every manager the problem or something else?
The club’s a bit of a joke. No Manager I’ve seen lasts there long or stays for something like 5 years. No wonder they don’t win anything.

27th March 2023 at 10:45 am #205595As amusing as the mess at Spurs is, I just don’t buy this “no manager will succeed there” thing. I think Mikus has made some excellent points about managers who have gone there and simply been a bad fit, despite all the manager’s previous achievements. Again, as Mikus has pointed out many times, you can’t go half hearted into a Conte/Mourinho type of appointment. If they’re going to succeed, you simply have to let them do their job and don’t try to change them by expecting them to be more attacking/proactive or expecting them to bring through academy players when it’s not something they’re known for.
The fact they’re going from the vastly different Mourinho/Conte type managers to potentially Nagelsman/Poch suggests they either don’t have a long term vision for the club or they too easily deviate from it because they lose focus on the long term objectives in favour of short term gains.

What qualifies as a success at spurs?
I think it’s top 4 and an occasional cup

27th March 2023 at 11:26 am #205599The argument about investment and success at Spurs was somewhat blown out the water when Leicester beat them to the title some years ago. We know Levy seems to like to run a tight ship and that seems to be the overall project. And when things start to slide a bit again, the manager is changed. They have to change the culture/mentality at the club, as well as the quality of their recruitment strategy. And then add the right manager and patience. It’s actually not that difficult.

27th March 2023 at 11:27 am #205600Yeah I think a club like Spurs should be winning or almost winning cups reasonably regularly Lucky. You wouldn’t expect Spurs to win a league but there’s no reason they can’t be up there challenging from time to time. Conte spent a lot of money at Spurs and, whilst he can’t be expected to “succeed” straight away, there were very few, if any, signs of progress.

27th March 2023 at 11:38 am #205601But what if a club is at its ceiling, is it reasonable to expect marked improvement from any manager?
Poch and Jose delivered cup finals, Jose was sacked week of his final. Poch and conte achieved champs league football (as did good old Harry if I remember right)
I am not saying its impossible to do better but not by much.
City, Liverpool, utd, Chelsea, arsenal – 5 clubs that will ensure top 4 is always odds against for spurs and Newcastle coming in to that. These clubs fighting hard for the same cups too.
My opinion is recruitment will need to be much better and even then when your wage bill is outside top 4 good luck regularly competing with top 4.
It would take a miracle for spurs to win league any time soon so it is appropriate that Leicester have been mentioned.

27th March 2023 at 11:48 am #205602But that would be my point Lucky, even in those rare circumstances of that 2015/16 season, Spurs still couldn’t win the title and were beaten to it by a side previously fighting relegation. It’s more than wage bill setting them back. It’s mentality. Man Utd & Arsenal have been in the doldrums for some time but we can see how things can change – yes money has helped of course, but it’s the mentality that Arteta & Ten Hag have instilled in all aspects of the club that has been the key factor for me. Ditto Klopp at Liverpool.

27th March 2023 at 11:59 am #205604Mikus, utd and arsenal are giants as are pool. The ceiling for these clubs is much higher than spurs.
Would anyone claim spurs are a sleeping giant like pool were? I wouldnt.

27th March 2023 at 12:12 pm #205605I’m not necessarily claiming Spurs are a sleeping giant. I just think there is more to success than wage bill. Even bigger clubs with greater financial clout who have success, can still blow a lot of their money. I mean look at Sancho & Antony at Man Utd for a combined fee of nearly Β£150 million. Have they really driven the club to success or could they have found several better players for less? But they can live with that because of the drive of the manager and mentality of the club.
