Mikus I really value a trophy too but we both know money talks and the champs league is the holy grail.

27th March 2023 at 6:31 pm #205676Alas, that’s the problem for me. The top 4 has become a “trophy” which creates excitement but obviously lacks the tangible feeling of winning something which instils something in players.

27th March 2023 at 7:27 pm #205677Being vaguey serious…
For me, the holy grail is winning the Prem. It’s the toughest league in the world, and whoever finishes top of it after 38 games is absolutley the best team in the country that season (unless it’s the Goonies of course, then everybody else was in tranisition!)… but with the competition to win it, you need to be able to attract the top players and, other than huge bags of cash, CL footy is a huge help to attract the sort of players you need to win the Prem…
As far as I’m concerned, you need regular CL footy to enable you to build a squad that will win the Prem. That’s why Top4 is vital.
Cups are nice, and I certainly wouldn’t sulk if we ever win one, but I don’t think anybody takes them seriously until it’s the semi’s…

27th March 2023 at 7:43 pm #205678People just change their stance when it suits them. Every trophy should be treated with the respect it deserves. Naturally, the League is the hardest competition, then your next venture is conquering Europe.
Part of me always feels the old European Cup Competition format held it’s prestige with only Top 2. Top 4 is definitely no trophy and it’s not some kind of a buzz as you have to go through the palaver of playing each team twice and quccessalify to get to the next stage. The actual excitement is when it’s around the quarters and semis, otherwise to me, it’s mundane and designed for the sake of commerce.
Success ultimately has to be measured from what’s delivered on the pitch from building and developing a team, to making it a successful one and to try and emulate that year after year, being a dominant force; not necessarily how rich your are and your global status.

27th March 2023 at 8:33 pm #205679Completely accept Banjo top 4 opens up access to the best players. So there’s no problem with top 4 being a stepping stone. But we all know it can fast become a target every season of aiming to just stay in the top 4 which may provide excitement in the CL but you can end up going no where really. You have to use the revenues and add to your squad whilst you’re in it. Arsenal under Wenger towards the end never seemed to do that. And neither did Spurs under Poch, though was it the case both teams used the funds to help fund the stadium?

27th March 2023 at 8:36 pm #205680That said if Arsenal win the Premier league this season they will have done it without being in the CL.

27th March 2023 at 8:51 pm #205681Exactly Mikus, and there in lies the problem with the thinking of some fans. They’ll always find a way to cheapen an achievement made fair and square.
