Sean, I wasn’t praising City mate I was just stating that City had dramatically cut their spend back this season and that was probably down to FFP.
Liverpool spent over £120m net this season they are one of the biggest spenders in the PL now and I expect that to continue and for them to become stronger.

8th February 2019 at 1:59 pm #33166YAY!!! A “My Bank Account Is Bigger Than Your Bank Account” debate…
For what it’s worth, which isn’t much granted, in my world anything and everything City and Chelsea ever win has an asterix next to it, based on how they got to where they are now, but in my eyes Liverpool are getting close to that with their recent spending. Whether they have enough in the bank to get to the City/Chelsea level of contempt in my house is another thing entirely, but they have spent enormously over the last couple of years.
Of course, I’ll say it before somebody else does, I wouldn’t sulk if Poncho went out and spent a couple of hundred million this summer either… 🙂

8th February 2019 at 2:01 pm #33167Positive Nil but the Coutinho fee played a big part in that as did the run to the CL Final which won’t happen every year but you should be in a good position to buy a player or two in the Summer.

8th February 2019 at 2:03 pm #33169Mak, I agree Coutinho was a massive loss and he’s a very difficult player to replace.
We’ll never know but it would be interesting to have seen where Liverpool might have been with the purchases they made with Coutinho still in the team.

8th February 2019 at 2:11 pm #33170If there is a comparison on City, sure, we can’t spend like for like, but we have shown in very most recent times that we are able to shell-out when it’s needed.
I’m not sure whether FFP is imposed in strictness or whether it’s more relaxed, but boundaries should have zero tolerance on any of our players to be on 200-300k a week. That can’t be on and we’re not that type of a Business Model irrespective of our history from the 1980s which in itself was a completely different scale factor.
The difference between Pep and Klopp in circumstance is that City almost over a 10 year period have not had to deal with an overhaul.
Liverpool on the other had with the frequent change in management have changed in their personnel of players. There are not many individuals in our squad that were the same names under Brendan Rodgers.
Klopp’s been there 3 years or there thereabouts, and he’s needed transfer windows to get build the squad the way he wants it.
Although we’re not there at the very optimum level, we have shown we’re able to compete and match the Elite on the pitch.
A fine line in being Finalists, but on the wrong end (very unfortunate). Heads can graciously be held high though, I would say.

8th February 2019 at 2:12 pm #33171Nine, @ 2:01, yeah you’re right mate – pleased that we had that ‘buffer’ in Coutinho’s transfer that enabled us to spend in the way we needed to.
Cheers

8th February 2019 at 2:16 pm #33172Mak @ 2:42,
just read your reply mate and all good. I know the season you were referring to and things got quite heavy in that place. That January reminded me a bit when we had this January, but we had a ‘full house’ for the first time as far as December went so it’s probably the reason why we held Top Spot for quite a number of weeks.
We’re in a better stead this time round I feel than 2016/17.
Cheers

8th February 2019 at 2:22 pm #3317427-Without United,Chelsea,& Arse going on massive rebuilding jobs, they wont be going anywhere near challenging, let alone winning the title.Thats without the risk of losing their best players every year. The way things stand right now,the 3 mentioned teams will be fighting for the 4th!

8th February 2019 at 2:24 pm #33177AnonymousI’m with Sean in his thoughts regards City. They don’t deserve any praise for their recent net spend, it isn’t at all as impressive as the figures suggest, for the reasons Sean stated.
Nine, my point regards Coutinho is one that many won’t agree with but I don’t miss him. You have to consider all aspects of what a player brought to the team. It’s easy to see that we’ve lost his wizardry and long range threat but our midfield controls games better without him. they defend the back 4 much better without him. I’m of course talking about Coutinho as a CM (be more specific if you like).
my own personal opinion is that when we went after Van Dijk, FSG knew Coutinho was going to be sold for big money somewhere along the line. If I’m wrong and they are totally ok spending £75m on a CB completely without any of that money coming in in the future then all you do is move on down the line to other players and besides Keita, we’ve got a group of players who have come in and are improving the side. Fabinho is in this list for me, as I think he’ll be a fantastic player for us. He’s already had a positive contribution, even if it isn’t on the same level as Van Dijk or Alisson etc but he’s carrying his weight and he helps make the 4231 work, alongside Wijnaldum.
yes, there are games where I miss Coutinho but I was getting used to a very solid Liverpool and i honestly really liked it. So Coutinho can stay where he is, we’ve moved on and improved as a result of him going to Barca.

8th February 2019 at 2:28 pm #33179Mav, I think you’re right although I think City’s spending will now be more restricted with UEFA’s eyes on them and that United can spend big without making too much impact on FFP.

8th February 2019 at 2:31 pm #33180Mak, nobody is praising City on reducing their spending all of my posts confirm that the massive reduction in City’s spending is almost certainly a function of FFP and the scrutiny City are under.

8th February 2019 at 2:33 pm #33181Anonymous“We’ll never know but it would be interesting to have seen where Liverpool might have been with the purchases they made with Coutinho still in the team.”
This is what I was getting at initially. You can’t have one without the other because Coutinho leaving facilitated, in part, the arrival of the players who’ve moved us forward. Some Liverpool fans (not pointing at anyone on here) want to have their cake and eat it too.
I’m really happy with how things have worked out. Obviously I’d prefer that the front 3 started putting the fear into teams again and not just Mane. Also, it’s hard to see a blossoming CB partnership getting ruined by injuries.
All in all though, I’ve managed to put the silly points losses behind me, for now. I can’t wait for the game tomorrow. I can’t say it loud enough, the team have got to respond.
Klopp used to talk about anger and hunger etc etc well, we need this again. The lads have got to put their foot down and take the 3 points. give Bournemouth no chance and tell City that it’s not going to be a ****ing easy. I’m not offended by what Walker said, inf act I’m delighted that he said it but we need to grit our teeth and say “who does this guy think he is? getting a little cocky isn’t it!? Well what are we going to do about it!?”.
Shake ourselves off and beat the shit out of Bournemouth. That’s what I want. A devastating performance with all the front 3 showing why they were so lauded last season.

8th February 2019 at 2:37 pm #33183AnonymousFFP has probably had the largest say alright Nine. City amassing a phenomenal squad has been a big factor too though … but what does it matter anyway. I don’t think either of us have a major interest to defend here.
