Nine the problem for everyone else is no one else got the opportunity to build such big squads because this FFP rubbish came in AFTER c$ty & chel$ki had built their squads. I don’t know what happened with your mob but c$ty only have to tweak their squad each year as the squad is already bigger than everyone else, hence they don’t have to spend a fortune every year to stay up top of the table. It’s goong to take a few years until others can catch up, if at all. Liverpool have spent a lot but as we will see it won’t be enough, we are falling apart now & there’s still 12 or 13 games to go.

8th February 2019 at 10:26 am #33141Oz, completely agree with that mate but let’s not pretend Liverpool are doing a Leicester City because they’re not.

8th February 2019 at 11:10 am #33146Hopefully a couple of us will catch up soon mate, otherwise the EPL will become pretty boring with c$ty winning it every other year.
I think we are heading on the right direction under Klopp bit maintaining it is another thing. As I said to Threeps I’d just be happy if we went back to last seasons style, might not have won anything but it was damn good to watch. I’d rather go down swinging than play how we are now._____________________________

8th February 2019 at 11:16 am #33149Oz, if Liverpool don’t win it and I think they still might they are going in the right direction mate. Chelsea have some catching up to do which may take a bit of time.
City I think will be more reserved with their spending given the current FFP investigation. United are the dark horses for next season they are more settled now have a decent squad which would become a very good squad with 2 or 3 of the right additions and they are a cash rich Club not hindered by FFP. Cheers 999

8th February 2019 at 11:23 am #33151You can’t compare at all Adlab
City have a much better squad.
Best squad in the league by far. Compare the two benches in last two games. The only player city really missed is ferdhibo. He’s cities most important player in my view
In aug when Ings fee comes in , klopp will have a net spend of 73m
Pep had a net spend of 400m let’s not try and butter it up that city are now filling the rules

8th February 2019 at 11:30 am #33153Sean, City do have a great squad but they’ve badly missed some big players this season. I don’t think anyone is denying that City spent really big previously but they’ve cut their spend down to almost nothing this season. Whilst Liverpool have invested considerably since January 2018.

8th February 2019 at 12:42 pm #33157I said from the very early days of Klopp, the feeling I got was that if we were ever to win the league under him, it would most probably only be by a margin of a few points. Not because we weren’t a super rich club, but because I sensed a lack of ruthlessness in him. He was on record at Dortmund saying he played first and foremost to entertain rather than to win. Now it may be the case we haven’t quite been as electric this season, but I think that’s more down to circumstances in terms of missing the likes of Coutinho/Ox.
But we’re not out the race, because even earlier on in the season I thought that City were not unbeatable. I thought they lacked leaders, would have struggled to maintain hunger after last year and would get distracted by the CL. And so it seems to be the case.
I note some people like to be more in the moment than hellbent on winning. And I very much sympathise with that position, with one caveat. That so long as the team gives it’s all, I don’t care if it wins, draws or loses. That’s what the true spirit of football is about. How we miss the likes of Gerrard and Carragher. Because no matter how badly we may have been playing, you always believed the game was never over with them on the pitch. No matter what, Gerrard would come up with the goods. He won trophies single-handedley. (Would Benitez have won the CL or FA Cup without the passion of Gerrard? No way). That hunger, that desire, was like having a fan on the pitch (which is what he was). But that’s gone, as it has at most of all the other top clubs (which as I say is why no team has successfully defended their title for a decade). And how worse off we are for it. I sympathise with Klopp that he has never had such people to call upon and it has inevitably led to a managers job being much more difficult (this is the point I was trying to make on the “managers dwindling authority” thread). It means managers now have to be near perfect and invoke a lot of the passion themselves (why is why, generally speaking, Mourinho has typified the modern era – successful by invoking a strong passion – but only temporarily because things get too wound up).
So we are where we are with football. Is it any wonder all the top teams keep stuttering? But in many ways this is what the premier league was designed to do – create a series of teams with temporary interchangeable players and managers and little identity so that it would keep mixing things up year on year. (If anyone has the time – go and watch the film documentary “Once in a Lifetime – The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos” – this story pretty much provided the blue print for the modern day game). The likes of Ferguson delayed that experience for Man Utd, but now they’ve embraced the modern day game…reluctantly one has to think. Some may be happy with it, or see it as an inevitable progression. And it obviously has its good bits. But for me it’s gone too far.

8th February 2019 at 12:48 pm #33158AnonymousNine, granted that Liverpool have spent a lot of money, especially recently but how much of that was sell to buy? I’m not interested in actually working it out but we’ve sold a few stars over the years. Torres, Suarez, Coutinho. The price has obviously gone up over the years but the significance at the time was huge. Each one broke our transfer out record.
I’m not looking to go down that road too much. The topic is well worn.
I will say though that loads of Liverpool fans are looking fondly back at Coutinho wishing we still had him. Some are in complete denial that his leaving was a huge part of how we were able to get players like Van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Keita etc.. Some name can be scratched off the list but even though a few have tried to suggest that we’d have all of these players even if we didn’t sell Coutinho, it’s pretty obvious isn’t it… 😀

8th February 2019 at 12:57 pm #33160Ye but nine pep doesn’t need anymore players only really a midfielder to replace ferindho as he is 33.
We bought big because we sold our so called best player
Cory list two games without ferndhio so they missed him but the rest?
Bernardo Silva came in for kdb and had been one of the best midfielders in the league this season. Kompany hardly starts when fully fit. Maybe mendy aswell but he can’t defend
City deserve absolutely no praise for their net spend this season when they have a net spend off 400 million in 3 years.
