Some teams may win titles without bringing kids through but it makes their success less sustainable and short term because you neee to keep throwing money at new players to keep things as fresh as possible though that even isn’t always enough in the age of the powerful players. Fergie was the master here let’s be honest. Bet his net spend each season wasn’t very much. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if Man Utd have spent more money since Fergie left than they did during his reign. But in the furore in the boardroom to try and make something happen any rationale or wisdom gets chucked out the window.

3rd January 2019 at 11:46 am #30726I’d argue that Chelsea, in particular, have found a way to make success long term and sustainable via an alternative route. They invest in some of the best young talent around and watch their value grow while out on loan and then sell for a profit. Profit which helps them buy more established, ready-made players. I don’t blame them one bit for it either. It works a treat for them and has kept their net spend at a reasonable level for a few years now. The added bonus is that any absolutely outstanding talent will show while on loan that he is indeed good enough to play. With the exception of maybe KDB, I don’t think they’ve made too many costly errors either

3rd January 2019 at 12:15 pm #30728The last CL spot is between Chelsea, Arsenal and United but without Chelsea solve their scoring problems in January I think it will be tough for them. Arsenal can’t defend and leak goals so they will struggle too imo, United currently look good but they are profiting from new Manager bounce and the fixtures have been kind to them plus they have a shaky defence too. All of which makes 4th place very difficult to call.

3rd January 2019 at 12:15 pm #30729Don’t disagree Ed, and I mentioned a few days ago Chelsea have adapted best to FFP in recent years. But even so, it’s still not what it could be when you compare Fergie’s record. It’s interesting that a team hasn’t won two straight championships on the run for a few years now in the absence of academy players. In fact, Man Utd were the last team to do it under Fergie winning 3 straight championships from 2006-2009. So it’s not been done for 10 years now which I think says a lot.

3rd January 2019 at 12:29 pm #30730Agree with Mikus, Chelsea have adapted really well to fffp. They sell squad players for massive money. Ake being an example.
In fairness they have had some top players to sell to bring in money but they are very savy in transfer market these days

3rd January 2019 at 1:34 pm #30731AnonymousNine, if things are that bad for you up top then you don’t even have to make the right signing, you could go out and buy your 2nd choice striker. Get the big signing in the summer then. It is only Sarri’s first season and it’s hard to be too critical of him but it will be a huge shame if Utd pass you out for the top 4 and it’s looking like that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

3rd January 2019 at 2:46 pm #30732Mak, I could have written your post above myself.?
If we can’t buy a striker we should bring Tammy Abraham back he’s far from the finished article yet and scoring goals in the Championship is very different to scoring goals in the PL but he’s something different and would add to what we’ve got imo.

3rd January 2019 at 2:51 pm #30734Mav, Baba has had a variety of injuries suggestions he might return to Chelsea this January but that might precede another loan Bakayoko has struggled to find his feet at Milan but is reportedly playing better now I’m hoping we sell him in the Summer.?
