Full mid-week schedule, with the NLD being the pick of the bunch.
No idea how to call it, with us Spuds being up and down quicker than Buffy’s knickers on a Friday night, and the Goonies being as predictably boring as possible… don’t even want to guess until I’ve seen the team sheets if I’m honest, but without their main man Saka, we have to be in with a shout.
An in-form Forest against this years Champions is probably next on the list, just glad they’re on differnet nights!
Pool could end up 9 points clear with a game in hand, come Thursday morning (and yet Waspy will still pretend its all to play for!! LOL!!)

13th January 2025 at 11:53 am #217289Surely 3rd vs 1st is pick of the bunch, not Arsenal vs some mid table fodder?
Forest’s form is unreal. 5 wins in a row without concededing if you include the cup game. I wish them all the best in getting top 4 (apart from Tuesday), refreshing to see them do well. If being cynical you could say the PSR breach and ponts deduction was well worth it!

13th January 2025 at 11:59 am #2172907 wins in a row, in all comps, cyber chum, Nuno is in with a shout for Manager of the Season I think! And they have a pretty easy run-in, last 8 games….. I really do fancy their chances for Top4. Always had a soft spot for them, being a big Cloughie fan….

13th January 2025 at 12:46 pm #2172915 without coceeding. There’s a 2-1 in the 7 I think at least.
So what went wrong for Nuno at Spurs? Only 4 months wasn’t it? Maybe it’s just his style is more acceptable at Forset than at Spurs?

13th January 2025 at 12:58 pm #2172933p’s… I think Nuno’s downfall at Spuds was because he was trying to follow the same Maureen plan, i.e. keep it all very tight and compact, and hope Sonny/Harry produced enough magic up top… the problem was it was both dire football and we didn’t have the players at the back to keep the clean sheets… chuck in the same players who were fed-up with Maureen getting very quickly feed-up with Nuno… and there you go… vaguely remember a lot of 0-0’s, and 0-1’s, with the occassional 1-0 chucked in… us fans never took to him and it was an uphill struggle from about game 5 of his tenure… shame, he seemed a likable enough fella… happy it’s working out for him….
Come on Waspy, have a pint of optimism for breakfast for a change… π
I bet you wouldn’t go and watch the bus parade “in case the bus breaks down”…

13th January 2025 at 4:10 pm #217295It does often make me wonder how big a factor environment is for a manager to succeed. Look at Spurs where both Nuno and Conte failed big time. Managers who are now both flying high in both the PL and Serie A. People say the same about the Utd job but none of the post Ferguson managers (who failed at Utd) have gone on to prove the club wrong. You can’t say that about Spurs where both of the above named managers have gone on to prove themselves (again) since leaving. The same applies for Everton where Marco Silva and Ancelotti both didn’t do great at Everton but then went on to prove themselves again afterwards.
What then does it take for a manager to succeed in a broken environment? Is it possible? Does it just require a complete reset?

13th January 2025 at 4:13 pm #217296Thing is Sean, I don’t think a blip is enough because there’s no decent competition chasing you this season. Arsenal are a shadow of the side of recent seasons. City are obviously way off it. That’s not Liverpool’s fault but they’re rightly taking advantage of it.

13th January 2025 at 5:21 pm #217297Ed, re your post above regarding environment and managers – this is why I think managers have to be aware of what theyβre walking into. To just take a job at a big club because itβs a big club is potentially asking for trouble, though the pay off when sacked will help – maybe thatβs a problem in itself. Nuno, a very good manager, was clearly the wrong fit for Spurs. But then so too were Mourinho & Conte. Ange is a lot more the right fit but I think heβs too far at the other end of the spectrum. A manager should be confident he is the right fit for the club in terms of playing style and really should be aware of any financial constraints in terms of spending on players. But then I would imagine a lot of managers just want the work and opportunities so they probably just take some jobs even if they donβt feel 100% about them. I think thereβs a lot of idealistic thinking over some managerial appointments from both the clubβs and managerβs points of view.
Regarding walking into broken environments – thatβs why having charisma is so important so you can lift things and quickly get people on side.

13th January 2025 at 5:38 pm #217299Yeah fair points Mikus. Re Ange, I just think he’s not a very good manager in all honesty. I think he’s way out of his depth in the PL. The level he’s won trophies at is just not in any way comparable to the pressure cooker environment that is the PL.

13th January 2025 at 6:08 pm #217301Getting the right manager is just as big a gamble as getting the right players and there’s no guarantee it’s going to work. As already mentioned above, managers can suck at one club, take over the world at another, just as players go from one club to another…there’s a fair amount of luck involved, even with a ton of due diligence…..
As for Angie, I think even the most Bruce Willis of Spuds fans know deep down we’re never going to when the League with Angie, but I do think with a fit squad we’re capable of a Cup or two (in fact, we’ve more chance of winning the CL than the PL!)…

13th January 2025 at 6:12 pm #217302Chucky, how highly do you prioritise the excitement and unpredictability a manager like Ange brings? I mean, would you rather have a Conte who is more likely to win something long term or a manager like Ange who is more likely to entertain?

14th January 2025 at 9:41 am #217309Good question…. first of all, if either Maureen or Conte were going to “guarantee” success with their brand of football, us Spuds (or at least most of us) would have ripped your arm off and whacked you with the wet bit… I’d take 38 x 1-0’s… but for whatever reason neither gentleman were delivering, or even looked liked possibly delivering “guaranteed” success… so that went the way it went.
Now, considering your question, I’ve been a Spud since the very early 80’s, and I can count the number of occassions we’ve been “challenging” for the title with 2 fingers, back in the early 80’s, and flirting when Poncho was around… as optimistic as a football fan can be, you also have to be a realist too. Most fans of most clubs will tell you whether they think you’ve got a chance for the title or not (I’d be “Not”, before a ball was kicked), so you’re left with the hope of a decent Cup run or two, and maybe qualifying for Europe and hopefully the CL…
This then, basically, leaves you with the hope of least watching your team “have a go” in every game… and that normally means trying to score more than the other.. i.e. entertaining!! It’s certainly more fun watching side try and score a call than trying to defend a lead, that’s for sure!

Ins only other than maybe a few kid loans β¦. But at least heβs injured! Not sure it will matter the way we are playing we will boss the game have 100 shots on goal 2 on target but down the keepers throat while relying on one of our 26 corners to get us a goal only to see your patched up mob do a united and win
