Ed, having watched Wolves against Liverpool and I think Chelsea, I find that they are not a bad side. Cnor Coady is a fantastic player and besides his positional awareness being top notch, he seems to fire the others up a bit.
Im almost disappointed for Utd, in some kinda small sense as I think Rangnick is the first good appointment that they’ve made since Fergie. The football lover in me is disappointed, the Liverpool fan side of me is another story… however, with ourselves, chelsea and yourself falling away… the whole thing is a disappointment.

3rd January 2022 at 8:05 pm #192861Well deserved win for Wolves, better all over the pitch. Game management at the end was excellent.
I’m not sure if RR realises the magnitude of the job required at United but one thing is for sure, he won’t have worked with players with such glaring technical deficiencies as McT, AWB, Phil Jones, McGuire or Shaw (and maybe one or two others) – hell of a long way back for United._____________________________

3rd January 2022 at 8:38 pm #192863Harsh on Shaw that gjblues π. He was the best LB in the league last season. Like a lot of that side, badly out of form. McTominay was brilliant at the weekend too. Maguire is an easy target because of his form since the summer and his fee but people forget how badly Pep wanted him. Conte has spoken very glowingly of him in the past, too. There’s a very good defender in there.
I said when he came in that anyone thinking this was a quick fix was kidding themselves. You don’t go from a counter attacking side to an intense pressing side who control games overnight. He doesn’t have the players to do it.

The way that he mocked Keane when he pulled up with an obviously very serious injury… I have zero sympathy for him.
As an Irishman, Keane is a strange one for me. There are times where I back him and love his passion and there are times where I just think he’s overplaying the whole thing. When it comes to this though, as hard a tackle as it was etc etc, Haaland had it coming and I just have no sympathy for him. He needlessly messed with the lion and the lion bit him.
If Gerrard had done the same thing, I know for sure that I’d have supported it. It’s a controversial opinion perhaps but ya, I dont care. I guess I believe in consequence. I still wait for the day that someone halves Ramos. I dont like to see violence in the game at all and the lads in Ice Hockey had a system where they would put out an “enforcer” to make sure that if anyone hurt their star players, they’d be dealt with. Wayne Gretzky (sp?) usually didnt get an overly rough treatment thanks to this understanding.
Haaland essentially laughed right into the face of a person who had just torn a knee ligament, or something like that. it’s meant to be the most painful football related injury out there… so fuck him. Im glad that Keane wrecked him.

3rd January 2022 at 8:53 pm #192869No idea Adlab. Hasn’t looked the same player for 18 months. It’s like his decline on the field has directly coincided with his growth off it.
Just can’t get my head around how we’ve been playing under Rangnick though. We were excellent for his first 45mins. Pressing all over and high intensity. Since then, we’ve been truly dreadful. Like going back to Van Gaal days.
People will point to individuals not being good enough and there’s a degree of truth in that. But this is a good (not great) squad. Easily good enough to walk to 4th in the league. I suspect we just won’t find the right formula under Rangnick until it’s too late, if indeed we do at all. I fear the Rangnick project is a 2-3yr job which will require more upheaval than the board will be willing to accept.

3rd January 2022 at 8:58 pm #192870Based on current performances Ed Rangnick isn’t getting much more out of these players than Ole was and without there’s a significant turn around I can’t see Rangnick going past this season.
Poch back on the menu? Was he ever off it?π

3rd January 2022 at 9:00 pm #192871Special mention today, I have to say, for Phil Jones. He’s so often a target of mockery amongst rival fans. Memes/gifs galore. Struggled a lot with his mental health. Despite all that he comes in after almost 2 years out and puts in a solid display.

3rd January 2022 at 9:01 pm #192872AnonymousEd, it’s come to the point where you’ve had so many managers that it’s time to point at the players.
It’s recently been shown that the players are maybe bickering and there is some in-fighting. We only have 1 match to look at here but maybe things arent good on the training ground.
Im surprised that Rangnick isnt doing well TBH, so I really am now looking only at the players and he might not be around for very long, so he can’t fix that but if i were a Utd fan, I’d be screaming out for a player who shook them all up and demanded more. It cant all be on the manager. Of course he can get such a player in… fernandez was definitely a step int he right direction in terms of his determination but he isn’t quite there when it comes to transmitting this to the rest and that is what Utd need.
Utd have a really decent, maybe a lob-sided team but they need a Gerrard or a Keane, who wont accept anything but 100% on the pitch. Someone who will lead by example, the manager is just a voice on the sidelines.
If they cant find such a unicorn then they must fill their squad with naturally determined players. Before Fernandez, they had other priorities but Edwards is a total clown.

3rd January 2022 at 9:02 pm #192873Nine, Rangnick was never intended to go past this season anyway. But yeah, looking unlikely he’ll get an extension!

3rd January 2022 at 9:02 pm #192874AnonymousNine, I dont think he ever was going to go past this season. He kinda burns out. I think what this tells us though is that even with a proper manager, this team has something seriously wrong with it.
That is very valuable information, if the people at Utd are competent enough to absorb it.

3rd January 2022 at 9:02 pm #192875“He doesnβt have the players to do it.”
Ed, and therein lies the point I was making.
McT is Championship standard at best – He had a half decent game against Burnley (Burnley, ffs) but I’m sure you’ve heard the saying ‘one swallow doesn’t make a summer’.
Shaw is overweight and gives away too many fouls because of it…..end of.
McGuire – would be three times the payer he is now, under Pep.United have massive issues both on and off the pitch – in that respect, you are correct in stating “….anyone thinking this was a quick fix was kidding themselves”

3rd January 2022 at 9:05 pm #192876Anonymousim not writing off Rangnick getting things going at some stage though. In fact, I’d be inclined to bet on it, when he figures out his best team of motivated players.
Im surprised that he hasnt been starting Greenwood. as i said, I dont watch utd but when I do, he looks decent.

3rd January 2022 at 9:07 pm #192877Mak, but a Gerrard or a Keane? Does that player even exist any more? I look around the whole league and I’m struggling to see anyone like them. I think the likes of Lingard, Martial, Pogba still being around won’t help things when it’s clear to everyone they’re off in the summer.
We’re badly short in the middle of the park. Matic doesn’t have the legs. McFred can run all day and you can’t fault their attitudes but they lack quality on the ball. I said at the beginning of the season that would be our downfall and why there’s no way we’d challenge.

3rd January 2022 at 9:10 pm #192878AnonymousGJBllues, i know it’s a bit of a theme and I probably am wrong here but I think McTominay is a good player. He is perhaps being utilized wrong. I’ve heard so much negative press for him though and I dont watch Utd very often, so I really am going off of far fewer views of him than others.
Shaw, I have never rated him. He is over-weight and it’s not a new thing. i know some rate him but I’ve always thought he was rubbish.
The real question though has to go on Ronaldo. Is he going to be a benefit to the team going forward or not? I want him in the PL but thing are going really poorly. I might annoy people with this but I know he’s really old for a footballer.. but he deserves better than this shit. He should be playing in a better team and I think he likely regrets going back to Utd.

3rd January 2022 at 9:56 pm #192880Hi Mak. Yep, you’re so right about Ronaldo – he definitely deserves better at this stage in his career, bearing in mind he’s one of the four best players to have ever played the game.
The problem RR has is that he’s obliged to play him in, pretty much, every game and in this country that’s near impossible, even for players in their prime.
I’m sure if he were at City, Liverpool or Chelsea his game time would be managed more sensibly._____________________________

3rd January 2022 at 10:05 pm #192881Both Solskjaer and Carrick started games with Ronaldo on the bench so that’s just not true Gjblues. The reason he’s not benched more is because we’ve no decent alternative, nothing else. Martial is gone. Rashford is badly off form. Greenwood has shown he’s not accomplished enough as a 9 yet. Cavani has been injured until recently. Rangnick is “obliged to play him” π. Where do some of you get your football info from?
