2nd October 2019 at 10:05 pm #49115Fabinho is certainly the kind of player we’ve been missing and has undoubtedly helped. But I just don’t think he’s *that* good I’m afraid. He, like the rest of the midfield, just gives the ball away too easily for me and gets too easily bypassed. Milner certainly steadied the ship when he came on. I think we’re crying out for a player like Kante – someone with the speed that can cope with our speed of play, i.e. both create and defend – being that insurance policy.

2nd October 2019 at 10:10 pm #49120Disagree about fabhino Mikus. He’s literally nearly on his own covering the ground as our full backs are pushed so high up and left and right midfielders pushed in
He’s make tackle after tackle. Very good on the ball aswell. Great player.
Do you think we are more attacking this season? Have we reverted back to two seasons ago? Last year it more conservative at times and when 3-0 up we just settled for that.

2nd October 2019 at 10:10 pm #49121Nine, I would have preferred if Barca v Inter was yesterday so I could have watched it. Was really hoping Conte could get a result and when I saw it was 1-0 I really fancied Inter to get a point at least. Havent seen the game but no doubt Inter would have made things extremely difficult for Barca and it is a very good turn around for them.

2nd October 2019 at 10:13 pm #49122He’s a good player Sean, but I just think we’re better suited to having more pacey box to box players in there with the way we play.

2nd October 2019 at 10:20 pm #49125Hey Nine, re the zonal marking. I think you can make an argument to switch to man to man easily based on the sheer number of set piece goals we are conceding. I mean what is the risk switching for a game or two?
Man to man may be just as problematic for us though. Beyond the centre backs and Alonso we are not the biggest of teams. For me its just as much about the players taking responsibility and learning from these mistakes. Zouma and Tomori who in general were excellent today need to be relied on to own the box at set pieces, Joe Cole was just talking about VVD in this way when discussing Chelsea’s zonal marking.
Maybe Lamps should give JT a call and ask him for advice on defensive set pieces 🙂 Like I said though I do think its decision making of the players on the field more than the set up either way imo

2nd October 2019 at 10:20 pm #49126Whenever we have or nearly have a bad result everyone jumps on the “we need new players” bandwagon. That midfield did bloody brilliant last season and has won every premiership game thus far. Let’s put things into perspective eh?
Nil I’m guessing your remark is aimed towards me as I’ve told you before you cant just buy a top class player and expect him to be happy on the bench. It’s nothing to do with upsetting the players already here, they wont come in the first place. Do feel I’m banging my head against a brick wall with this one mind…

2nd October 2019 at 10:25 pm #49127European Teams to my feeling hate us, and so they’re going to be extra -up-for-it.
Personally, I could not care one less about any of them, Barca, Real, PSG, the lot of them. No spark for me what-so-ever. I see it as an Elite comp with a scope to win a trophy.
It’s a shed load better though than the Europa. Couldn’t believe the hostile vibe and whistles coming from Anfield.

2nd October 2019 at 10:26 pm #49128God bless Glenn Hoddle btw, I am so glad he is looking well and still with us on European nights. He is always so supportive of all the English teams and is still very insightful.

2nd October 2019 at 10:28 pm #491293p’s, it’s not actually aimed at you at all mate. I’m being realistic and thoughtful to players like Van Dijk and Fabinho especially. Jordan Henderson in his life a lot of the time will be a passenger.
We can’t change him. So we need Keita fit, and a more inform and switched on Gomez.
I refer to the point of squad depth which gives us strength, freshness and endurance.
We can stay on the opposite sides of this all day long.

2nd October 2019 at 10:31 pm #49131Agreed Lucky and lots of positive comments from Glen Hoddle and Rio on Chelsea and Glens now another one who is predicting that Chelsea will be a top top team in a couple of years.
Here’s hoping.

2nd October 2019 at 10:33 pm #49132Threeps, for the record I’ve been concerned about the midfield for some time. It’s what prevented us beating City last season, and is what will prevent us beating them again this season if we don’t improve. Guardiola & City have raised the bar, we have to deal with that.

2nd October 2019 at 10:37 pm #49133Anonymous“Mak, that’s what I’m alluding too when I mention the point of buying 2 New Players.”
I get you I guess. I didn’t entirely agree as Hendo had been on the up and Wijnaldum , well, I’ve no major complaints about him but I’m not dishing out the credit that I used to. He was playing to such a high standard before and although he’s pulling his own weight generally, he can do better. It’s Henderson who I think we’ve got to improve upon now. I see his value to a point but I think there is some misguided sentimentality from the majority of fans. As a Liverpool fan. you can’t criticize Hendo without being shouted down by the mob. I think on here we are way ahead of the curve in terms of emotional detachment but even on here, I know I’ve to be careful when i say this kinda thing but… you guys know me by now, I’ll voice unpopular opinions.
If we’re to move forward as a club, we’ve got to sign a top quality replacement for Hendo, or others whoa re also vying for that place. There are a few and I am not even ruling out Wijnaldum’s place from this also. At least 1 top transfer though. Sentiment will lose you trophies.
As for Gomez being terrible tonight. He’s had almost no game time this season. He’s also unhappy at the club as a result. Matip has been one of our best players so far but Gomez has the potential to be just as good and was last season at the same stages. Let’s not forget that.

I’ve watched every minute we’ve played this season, so what perspective do you think I’m putting this in exactly?

2nd October 2019 at 10:43 pm #49135Mikus maybe it was that midfield that kept us fighting for the title and winning the Champions League?
Mak, dont really get your point. You watched every minute? Good for you. Doesn’t mean you are immune to over-reacting.

2nd October 2019 at 10:45 pm #49136It’s all about led and steam for the course of 60 games and our involvement in 4+ competitions.
Maybe or likely, we could be out of the FA Cup and League Cup. The CL and PL aside of the fringe occasions like the World Club Tournament is an instruction given by John Henry FSG to emphasize on and try and win (or grow as further).
From their point of view, they see Pound Signs. For that to be achieve, you have to have a well-rounded squad depth.
Like a few on here have pointed out, that’s ultimately what got Manchester City over the line despite Liverpool pushing them all the way with a shortage of just 1 point.
