22nd December 2018 at 5:14 pm #29950Palace are well organised and can be very hard to break down and then if they score a wonderful goal and are awarded a penalty you’re in trouble that result makes the title race even more interesting .
Chelsea won’t qualify for the CL without they solve the striker connundrum in January Sarri knew that in the Summer and it’s been the same problem since selling Costa no point in beating City and completely dominating games if you don’t have a striker who can score or anyone in midfield who are a goal threat.

22nd December 2018 at 6:08 pm #29953I mentioned the other week on here that I thought Liverpool might embarrass City at the Etihad shortly and today’s performance makes it difficult to change that view. The Palace result is totally unsurprising as City hasn’t really been at it for a little while now. Obviously a long way to go but City seem that bit off the pace and may well struggle to do much damage to Liverpool, certainly in the near term.

22nd December 2018 at 6:31 pm #29955I’ve been highlighting the Chelsea striker problem since before the Summer there is no point having 72% plus possession and having more than twice as many shots and corners as your opponents week in week out if you don’t have a striker you can rely on to regularly score goals who the opposition see as a threat. Chelsea would be comfortably qualifying for the CL imo if Conte hadn’t fallen out with Costa and got rid of him.
It’s not rocket science and Sarri identified it as a problem before he even got through the door and if it’s not solved in January which won’t be easy to do then Chelsea will struggle to qualify for the CL via the PL and would have to rely on winning the EL which won’t be an easy task either particular without a reliable striker.
Hopefully the powers that be at the Bridge are now tuned in to that and will try and do something about it and back Sarri.

22nd December 2018 at 6:45 pm #29958City will get back on track when they get their top players back no Fernandino, Mendy, Silva, Aguero or KDB either not available through injury or not starting is a massive miss it’s 50% of their outfield team and any team would struggle to fire on all cylinders under those conditions.
It’s a reverse situation now imo instead of Liverpool needing to hang on to City’s coat tails to stay in the race it’s the other way around now with City needing to hang on to Liverpool’s coat tails and City will need to win their next couple of games and then beat Liverpool at the Etihad to get it back to just one point.
Personally I don’t think City will have any sort of mentality problems as all of their players have been in the thick of title races previously some more than once and are used to the pressure but today has certainly made the title race even more interesting and haven”t done any harm to Liverpool’s belief either. Some times it is written in the stars.?

22nd December 2018 at 7:11 pm #29959And as predictable as the rising of the sun, Man Utd suddenly start performing again with Jose now gone. The same players who werenβt delivering are suddenly heroes again. Imagine a job in any other walk of life where you didnβt perform because you didnβt like your manager. Youβd be toast. But now the players call the shots. Whatever happened to professionalism?

22nd December 2018 at 7:13 pm #29960Good to see OGS off to a good start. Here’s hoping he and the lads can keep it up.
Nice to see City lose. If it’s going to be a two horse race for the title between City and Liverpool, then I truly hope Liverpool wins it. Unfortunately City’s squad is so deep, and LFC can’t afford any silly mistakes._____________________________

22nd December 2018 at 7:37 pm #29962Nine nine nine – yes City should get better with more to choose from but I’m not sure It will keep pace with Liverpool which is improving significantly in the league this year.
Srd79 – not convinced on City’s depth of squad either – who will it look to to improve its defence? Pep’s certainly going to earn his money now…._____________________________

22nd December 2018 at 7:58 pm #29963SB, defence might be their achilles heel, but all things considered, they have more to choose from than LFC, I think.
And it would probably be the first time in his managerial career Guardiola had to really earn his money! πIf United can’t win the League, I’d rather see LFC win it than City. But IMO City remain favourites.

22nd December 2018 at 8:25 pm #29965srd79…our “deep squad” did nothing for us to day. OK, maybe an “off day” but if we want to win the title we have to win matches, particularly at home. I do not know if other teams will learn something from this but we are a different team with Fernandinho, Silva and KDB plus Augerro up front. Leicester will now be a test of character and application to get the job done, we had wingers on the pitch to day but did not serve them. That was down to Delph,Walker and Stones, who is not a holding midfied player in my opinion. No excuses though, Palace had the measure of us and credit there manager Roy Hodgson for that.Walker had a nightmare game Gungdogan and Bernardo snuffed out

22nd December 2018 at 8:30 pm #29966SB, bit more than just “more to choose from” mate imo arguably those 5 are City’s best players and any team would miss players of their stature.
If City can hang on to Liverpool and get them all back playing regularly sooner rather than later I still think they might win it but City need to get back to winning ways ahead of the game at the Etihad and then they need to win the game v Liverpool.
Interesting days ahead especially for the neutrals.

22nd December 2018 at 8:42 pm #29967Well thats a crap pre- christmas! Utd had it very easy but you can only play whats put in front of you and that was a poor Cardiff side. They will be relegated.
We didnt get the run today, woodwork, off the line several times, a wonder goal by Townsend. Spoilt Christmas. Mind you I hate Christmas anyhow!Difficult question here. Can anybody remember the last time City were at home on Boxing Day. Discussing with somebody today and cant remember. Dont think any of you guys would know.
Lets hope Liverpool get one of these days.

22nd December 2018 at 8:50 pm #29968If Spurs beat Everton tomorrow, theyβll be just 2 points behind City which is a remarkable achievement considering the spends of the two clubs. And it would have to be said that the top 2 are in fact a top 3 as they would all be drifting away from 4th and 5th position.

22nd December 2018 at 9:26 pm #29970Mikus, right now you could say that about City and Spurs but it’s a moment in time mate City have won the PL and the League Cup last season. And they are still favourites for both the PL and the CL. Having said that Spurs are having a very good PL season considering the hiccups with the Stadium no spend and now all the speculation about Pochettino.

22nd December 2018 at 10:29 pm #29971AnonymousDonβt forget that this season we havenβt been able to field a full strength team at any point and had 9 first team players pretty much have no preseason.
Great weekend for Liverpool so far.

22nd December 2018 at 11:38 pm #29972AnonymousGood point Mikus. You’ imagine a team that has lost 4 times would be in a worse off position but they’ve won every other game, no draws makes for a deceptively high points tally. credit is due to them and the manager. Most teams would have gone backwards in their position but if they win tomorrow, they are only 6 points behind us.
To the City lads, I talk about pressure and tests but you saw things change when De bruyne (especially) came on. ye were back to your old self and if you had more time with himself and Aguero on then you’d have won that match. They are just back from injury though. I hope for poor form but I’m expecting City to be back to battering teams by 3 and 4 goals from next game on.
Arsenal outplayed us in the previous match, so there’s a huge challenge for us there before we even meet you. You’re still favourites.

23rd December 2018 at 9:55 am #29975Nothing much to take from the Utd game. Anyone going in would have got that new manager lift. Let’s see in 10 games or so where we are and after we’ve faced tougher competition.
Surprised by City and Chelsea. At least the title race looks more interesting this year.
