Because, are we otherwise in danger of implying “it’s wrong to racially abuse someone at football, but more so if you’re a fan”.

10th December 2018 at 11:32 am #29244Ed, depends on whether it’s in a club’s interest to prosecute. If it’s a player or owner abusing players, they have immunity because of the power they hold over the club. If it’s just a few fans, they have little power so will get prosecuted. It’s ultimately a question of who holds more power/money. It shouldn’t be, but this is the way the world works I’m afraid. Which is why the US recently didn’t go after Saudi Arabia after the murder of the journalist because it wasn’t in their interests to do so. But had it been a less powerful country, they would have done. As the old saying goes, nations don’t have friends, only interests. The same is pretty much true of clubs.

10th December 2018 at 11:40 am #29245I don’t disagree with a word of that Mikus. It makes me wonder though if racism will ever truly be stamped out while ever power dictates the level to which we tolerate/punish racism. I don’t have a solution and I’m not sure there is one, without every single football club agreeeing to not employ players charged with racism, which would never, ever happen.

10th December 2018 at 12:21 pm #29246People also have short memories Ed. I’d say Suarez has made a full “recovery” at Barcelona, most people now think of his goals and skills rather than biting and the Evra incident. And clubs know this because that’s what clubs are ultimately about – goals, skills and entertaining people. Also remember Cantona? – not racism but still very bad behaviour. But people quickly forget because they want to forget. So human behaviour or rather mob behaviour also plays a part here. Entertainment trumps morality.

10th December 2018 at 12:25 pm #29248Some interesting thoughts here guys…
There is also the “option” (can’t think of another word, perhaps “excuse”) that “scumbags” could use would be the “heat of the moment” angle, the same as the players have used, giving it larger with the “don’t do this on the street” level of pathetic excuse..

10th December 2018 at 12:40 pm #29249Again Mikus, hard to disagree with any of that and I think players have rightly been given the chance to “reform” so to speak. Maybe education is the way to go with these scumbag fans then, who maybe should deserve the same courtesy the multi million pound players are afforded in being thrown a lifeline, a chance to redeem themselves. Send them off on a racism awareness training and make them publicly apologise on the tannoy at the abused player’s home ground to get the ban lifted!

10th December 2018 at 1:26 pm #29250AnonymousAgree with the Ed, they’ll be two level of punishments. Fan will get a life ban, whereas players in the past have got a few weeks.
Weird that so many people take so much hatred with them to a football match.

10th December 2018 at 1:31 pm #29251I think a lot of it is simply down to the imbecilic mindset of “monkey see, monkey do”…

10th December 2018 at 1:32 pm #29252That’s a bad phrase… down to the imbecilic mindset of “follow the leader”…

10th December 2018 at 1:46 pm #29253Agree with Alfie it’s “Weird that so many people take so much hatred with them to a football match.” And it regularly happens at many of the the big games.
Interesting thoughts re punishments of players v so called fans for racism I guess it comes down to it being a players career and a lifetime ban would be preventing a player to earn a living.
Paxton I agree “Manc c” if that was really the insult isn’t nearly as bad as “black c” but it’s still bad enough for a ban imo.

10th December 2018 at 1:53 pm #29254Never had a season ticket, but don’t they have some sort of “behavior” clause in them, hence the bans in the first place?

10th December 2018 at 2:43 pm #29256From today’s Standard.
“Chelsea are continuing to collect and sift through evidence, including audio and video footage, while lip-readers are being employed to determine exactly what was said. However, the club have been able to name the individual in question and his details have been passed on to the police.
A police spokesperson said: “We are aware of a video circulating online in which it is claimed racial abuse was allegedly directed at a player. We continue to review the footage and CCTV to determine whether any offences have been committed. There have been no arrests and our enquiries continue.”
Should the supporter be found guilty, he will be handed a ban from Stamford Bridge.
A Premier League spokesman added: “The club and the police are rightly investigating this serious matter. The Premier League and the clubs are opposed to all forms of discrimination in football and if anyone is found to have racially abused a Premier League player they deserve to be punished. We will support any action taken by the club or the authorities.”

10th December 2018 at 6:07 pm #29270I think big jim or Adlab highlighted media bias againest Sterling and I didn’t agree but they were right
The lad gets some crazy stick very undeserved at times
His statement was spot on
It’s not just Chelsea. These fans are everywhere but as Alfie highlighted, some anger from grown men. Ludicrous

10th December 2018 at 8:35 pm #29276AnonymousSterling started getting undeserved stick when he left Liverpool imo.
Some of the stuff regarding his performances is fair, imo, as he is poor for England. However a lot of the stuff about him personally is way over the top.
The way he highlighted the way that the two youth players at City were treated by the press for doing the same thing may point to a wider issue – though it could be a coincidence.
That is also part of the issue, most of this racial stuff is covert so it’s easily deniable. Even when it is plain as day we get excuses over what was said ‘was is manc?’ Even though you would never dream of calling Willian a cockney.
Chelsea have suspended four fans over the sterling abuse – so that’s a start but it does highlight how quickly and decisively clubs will act when it’s a fan and not a player.

10th December 2018 at 10:11 pm #29286Alfie…Sterling frustrates the hell out of me, however, he misses more goals than he scores goals but one thing is undeniable, he is a team player and puts in a shift plus and that is never an issue from Pep or Southgate Lets hope it gets resolved quickly

12th December 2018 at 5:11 pm #29380You will never resolve this. Combine inbuilt racism with jealousy and you have a time bomb.
The media dont help either. The newspaper articles written about Sterling have racist overtones. Sterling gets huge stick for the gun tatoo. Pickford(I think) and others nothing for knife tatoos.
Racism is alive and well and living in the UK. That is undeniable. Why the surprise its in football._____________________________
