Mikus, whilst that sounds great in hindsight, players like Ronaldo aren’t signing 1 year contracts, let’s face it. Signing him wasn’t the problem IMO. Not finding a way to move him on this summer was and that supposedly comes down to Joel Glazer’s reluctance to lose his commercial superstar. It’s made life for Ten Hag much harder than it needed to be when it’s clear he doesn’t fit a Ten Hag team. Ten Hag has handled the situation impeccably though, from deciding when to play him, to dropping him and publicly calling him out for refusing to play, to giving him the captaincy last week, ensuring it appears that Ten Hag has done what he can to keep Ronaldo happy while retaining his authority in the dressing room.

14th November 2022 at 7:41 am #200979Bored already, when’s this tainted World Cup going to be over? (You watch, Engerland will go and win it now!)

14th November 2022 at 8:37 am #200980That interview was Ronaldo’s “I’m a Celebrity get me out of here” moment. π

Well, if that’s at the root of why Ronaldo was signed, there’s your problem right there.

14th November 2022 at 1:44 pm #200992Presumably, this is all extracted from his ron de vous with Piers Morgan right?
Whilst somebody is employed with ‘the business’, it’s just bad practice (and I make light saying that) to criticize and essentially express negativity.
I never liked the way Raheem Sterling went on the BBC to try and engineer his transfer to Man City. He really thought he was Bertie Big Balls. I would never re-sign him for that very reason.
Grievances can be tricky to try and formulate into a discussion of mediation. Which is what is required so a solution and a plan is the ultimate outcome suited to all parties.
There is no way Ronnie will kick a ball for United again. He was naive or otherwise point-blank in denial to think the facet of the Manchester United set up on return would resemble to anything like the way he left more than a decade ago.

14th November 2022 at 2:59 pm #200994Sky reporting United are looking to take legal advice before responding to Ronaldo suggests they may be looking to cancel his contract?

14th November 2022 at 3:19 pm #200995Mikus, so the conclusion we’ve arrived at is that the Glazers are a problem. Who would have known?!

14th November 2022 at 3:49 pm #200996I think we dodged a very expensive bullet.
Thank you so much SAF. We had to get Haaland and Alvarez instead.

14th November 2022 at 4:21 pm #200998Oh the only thing worse than us having signed him would have been to see him go to City and win the CL with them. I’m convinced they’d have won it had he gone there. His legacy at Utd was destined to be tarnished whichever Manchester club he went to. Much, much rather the outcome that happened rather than seeing him lift a trophy with the blue side. I don’t think City lose that semi to Real with Ronaldo in the side.

14th November 2022 at 4:22 pm #200999Besides, had he gone to City, there’s no way City don’t also sign Haaland and Alvarez. Wherever he ended up, he was always a short term signing at his age.

15th November 2022 at 6:47 am #201001My own take on it based on reading well-placed sources as well as some speculation on my part. I suggested last season that Ronaldo would be off if we didn’t get CL and I think many felt the same. That goals record to him is everything and Messi is closing in on it. Individual accolades have always been more important than any club to Ronaldo.
We know Ronaldo wanted out in the summer and it appears Utd were happy/prepared to let him go despite there being mixed feelings amongst the decision makers. However, when nobody appeared to want to pay his wages, I think Ronaldo’s team would have gone to Utd and asked to be paid off and part ways. This would have meant Utd not only paying Ronaldo but also needing to pay for a replacement which is a cost they hadn’t accounted for, leaving Ronaldo with no choice but to stay. This interview, IMO, is a second attempt at having his contract either paid up or torn up. Utd are forced to act now. Back Ronaldo and undermine Ten Hag or back Ten Hag and find an exit for Ronaldo. They’re the choices. Either way Ronaldo gets what he wants.

15th November 2022 at 7:45 am #201002Itβs a pity the way itβs ended Ed as his legacy is tarnished a bit now. The lift it gave the club last season and it was like when fowler went back to us. Also, he scored 18 pl goals which is a brilliant return.
He was the only signing who delivered. His problem is he thinks he should be starting every single game. Heβs 38 in feb but he wonβt take being 2nd choice. He canβt play for utd again after this.
Also he went to piers Morgan and the rag of a paper! Terrible from him all round but I totally agree ten hagg has really handled this well. Great stance from him and no one is bigger then the club

Ed, this is Ronaldo’s nuclear attempt to force his way out there’s no way back for Ronaldo at United and it’s beyond Ten Hag’s remit now.
United will undoubtedly want to sack him with no financial responsibility on them that depends on their lawyers advice or they will need to come to the best agreement they can with Ronaldo’s lawyers re paying him off something they will understandably won’t want to do because they won’t want to see him financially rewarded in any way.
