Adlab, the we pay comment is a strange one, we’ve always paid, today probably more in real terms in out actual outlay, but directly vastly less to what it actually costs to run your chosen club.

Pre shirt advertising, the vast majority of the money came from gate money, some came from pitch side and programme advertising, very little from merchandise, nowadays although we pay a lot directly, it is only a small proportion of the actual costs, now we pay through the nose not only on match days but on direct merchandise, TV and indirectly on anything made by sportswear companies.

The reason is purely down to player greed….Pagan

Yep because we pay so much through TV etc there is masses of money for the top clubs.
Therefore big contracts, therefore big pay offs.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if free broad band were to be rolled out, as the cost of footy would no longer be subsidised by that revenue stream and would then be just in the subscription to the TV channels, personally I think that would more than double the cost, and some may balk at that, which may cause a bit of an implosion….Pagan

Agreed Adlab – we the consumer are ultimately feeding the beast that is modern football because fans will still follow their clubs no matter what and are therefore there to be milked by the broadcasters as Murdoch realised years ago in the advent of Sky. And then in came BT. And now in comes Amazon. And fans will keep paying. And as I said last week with regards to Silva and it meaning Everton will have spent £20 million on failed management fees in just one year, fans just accept it because they’ll do anything to try and be successful. And that then influences the club boards. So for me it comes from the bottom, not the top. And if we take Silva at Everton – did they pay a lot to get Silva out of Watford because they’d done a lot of due diligence and research on him or did they get him because they feared somebody else would? People act out of fear in many decisions and it isn’t always rational. That’s the root cause. Everybody else employed in football be it managers, broadcasters, players, etc are merely opportunists.
