35 year old Silva one of the 3 best in the world? Not a patch on Varane IMO. I don’t see anywhere near enough Serie A to rate Koulibaly but he seems popular amongst the twitter folk. Been a bit underwhelmed in a couple of the CL games I’ve seen him in though. He was good against Liverpool to be fair.
Well I’m happy to have him Sean anyway! Definitely think City would be much closer to Liverpool had Pep got Maguire though.

24th November 2019 at 9:38 pm #54125Lol it’s funny in Pep making X amount signings in the summer to strengthen in attempt of a 3rd League Title in Succession. He’s flapped at any given adversity. Yet people LAUD HIM. He dresses rough to begin with; Combats and a Hooded Top. He’s no class Manager at all.

24th November 2019 at 9:45 pm #54129Ed, that sounds patronising for no apparent reason – very belittling if anything.

24th November 2019 at 9:46 pm #54130Fair enough. I watched Koulibaly quite closely in the CL last season as I knew we were closely linked to him. Was quite underwhelmed tbh. Did you see him at the Emirates in the spring? Maybe that game was just a one off but he looked like a pub player in that game. But as I said, I don’t watch Serie A at all so no idea how consistent he is

24th November 2019 at 9:48 pm #54131Pep Guardiola is NOT βBestβ Manager in the World.
A Ready-Made so and so
Some people I donβt think truly have depth of life experience and knowledge of Football
“For no apparent reason”. There’s your reason above Nil. Just no need for you to start on one of those rants at all. They usually don’t end well so just a word of warning that’s all

24th November 2019 at 9:48 pm #54132Since when has a difference of an opinion been tagged as ‘nonsense’ or ‘rubbish’?
I don’t rate Pep.

24th November 2019 at 10:07 pm #54138Has anybody even claimed on here tonight that Pep is the best Manager in the world? I haven’t seen it if they have not even one of the City lads.
If I take my Chelsea goggles off I can see that Pep and Klopp are currently two of the best Managers in the world if not the two best Managers in the world.
With of course Frank running them close in third place.
Just joshing!?

25th November 2019 at 2:04 am #54152AnonymousTo Ed and Sean. Not to be boring but the value of the player differs on how badly they need them. Utd were desperate, the market didn’t offer too many options (seemingly) and Utd desperately needed someone of quality. Would Maguire be worth 80m or even 40m to Liverpool? Not a chance in hell. Admittedly Gomez appears to be struggling to come back to fitness and form and Matip is currently injured but they’ll be back, so we’re all good for top quality CBs.
Utd couldn’t afford to go into this season without a very good CB and they got one. Things are not going their way now even with him but they’d be worse off again without… although maybe that would have been the final straw for the owners to sack Woodward and Ole. Ok Sean, I’m with you man, he’s not worth a penny to Utd! π

25th November 2019 at 6:02 am #54154Chelsea should have gone for the jugular and sold Luiz for more than 8 million. Can’t work that one out. Maybe that just wanted rid of so offered unders.

25th November 2019 at 6:08 am #54155Just going to wade in here with my opinion of Maguire and other CBs if that’s ok, but it’s just my humble opinion.
Maguire is an ok centre back, better than what Utd had before although that isn’t saying much. He is excellent at getting that rather large head of his on the end of high balls into the box. His actual straight line speed is reasonable but has the acceleration and turning circle of the QE2. His reading of the game and positioning of the game is pretty poor and only looks good in a low block team. Are or should Utd be a low block team? I would say no, they are a or should be a top team and therefor be more attack minded. If Utd played with a high line against quality opposition (not seen them do this thus far) his positioning would be found out and he hasn’t got the acceleration to redeem it.
Varane was a quality CB but I believe has had injuries recently and isn’t at the same level. He has one thing a good high block centre back needs, pace. He also seemed very elegant on the ball and composed.
Koulibaly, a mountain of a CB. He throws himself into every challenge and seems to relish being the a single man wall that no one shall pass. But throwing yourself around usually indicates that the player wasn’t actually in the right position in the first place although most fans don’t see this and think it’s a sign of a good player.
The guy from Leicester that no one can spell his name, was impressed by him against Liverpool but not seen enough really to comment.
De Ligt, think people are seduced by hype a little too much with this guy. Seen him a few times and he’s not impressed. I believe he has admitted himself that he has struggled since his move to Juve.
VvD, got it all. He didn’t just come in to the Liverpool side and have a few good performances, he transformed the entire defence. And this is no mean feat, it changed very quickly from a very susceptible one to one of the best in the world. That’s what an elite CB should do, and if you pay an elite CB price that what you should expect.

25th November 2019 at 7:31 am #54159In Ole’s post match interview he seemed to be searching for positives when his team had been totally outplayed by Sheffield United for over 70 minutes and only a wonder goal from full back Brandon Williams changed the course of the game for them.
I feel sorry for Ole he’s a United legend as a player but he looks completely out of his depth currently and the pressure on him is telling and is even greater now given the availability of Pochettino.

25th November 2019 at 7:35 am #54160I think we all agree that United paid well over the odds for Maguire and that Virgil Van Dyke is the best Centre Back in the world currently.

25th November 2019 at 7:57 am #54165Iβve not seen much of de Ligt to be honest.
Only really in cl and for Holland and heβs made a few mistakes
Kuilbaily can play football aswell. Good right and left foot. If he was younger then he be a must buy for one of the big teams
Chelsea were chasing him 3/4 years ago
If anyone has watched Thiago Silva now then you can see why he is so highly rated. Top class defender.
