Heard on the Radio today that the League Cup Final will be the first Cup Final to utilise VAR let’s hope for no hiccups. Overall I’m sure VAR is the right way to go.

23rd February 2018 at 2:34 pm #16376Have to Echo Nine and PPTs sentiments with regards to VAR but can understand others concerns. I didn’t know that it was used on the continent Alfie, is it being used in the WC then this summer?

23rd February 2018 at 4:22 pm #16384AnonymousBBC article saying 47 percent of footballers in Germany are against VAR in its present capacity as it simply hasn’t been worked out enough. IE: when and when it isn’t used.
Where the tech is used in Tennis and Cricket, the number of variables is greatly reduced hence why hawk eye works more often than not, it is also used for simple fact establishing. Like did the ball cross the line or not.
In football, it will never be 100 percent accurate because too many variables. Which kills the idea of it for me. If they can make 100 percent fool proof then cool… until then, let the ref be called a wanker.

23rd February 2018 at 5:52 pm #16391Everything is in place as far as Tech goes, but it needs to be delivered accurately. The processes need to be clear and co-ordinated.
Once you see a consistent pattern that is able to shoe-horn into the game smoothly, then I’m sure we’ll be seeing the benefits.

23rd February 2018 at 6:07 pm #16394Jim, as I understand it FIFA intend to use VAR on all the games in the World Cup Finals.

23rd February 2018 at 6:16 pm #16396If they insist on using VAR in the PL, I canβt see why they canβt have an area or room in the ground where they can use both the Sky and there own camera feeds. It will be farcical if they make decisions from their feed, when Skyβs show otherwise….Pagan

23rd February 2018 at 8:05 pm #16413AnonymousJim – VAR is used in the leagues in Portugal, Italy and Germany. Poland too I think. Australia and USA also have it.
Itβs being used differently in various countries, but it seems the most successful is when the ref reviews the footage themselves (which I donβt think anyone in England has done yet).

23rd February 2018 at 8:08 pm #16414AnonymousPagan – they do have the same feed.
They only have the pure feed though, no commentary, no sky director deciding which of the camera feeds they are shown (they get all camera feeds), no sky director deciding what replays are shown and no punditry.

23rd February 2018 at 8:16 pm #16415Alfie, I was under the impression that they had their own cameras, thatβs why I said they should have the additional Sky feed as well. Still canβt get my head round why they canβt have portable studios or rooms at the grounds. Something in the tunnel, with no access except for the ref would be even better, I think thereβs more integrity in the ref changing his mind with VAR, than someone remotely telling him heβs wrong without giving him the opportunity to review it himself….Pagan

23rd February 2018 at 9:06 pm #16419AnonymousPagan, itβs the same feed, they cannot get double the cameras in the grounds, and what would be the point when the best camera positions are already taken?
They do have a facility for the ref to review the footage already, but I cannot recall any English based ref doing so.

24th February 2018 at 7:52 am #16429Wow had no idea it was being so widely used Alfie. If the Ref is best to review decisions do you know if he does it on the big screen or a monitor. Personally I would have thought it’s easier for the fourth official to do it. Or another ref in a tv room or somethings His eyes would be accustomed to the screen.

24th February 2018 at 8:06 am #16431AnonymousI believe they use a monitor at the side of the pitch. Might differ from country to country though.

24th February 2018 at 10:51 am #16443Alfie – in the Liverpool-West Brom Cup tie a few weeks ago, the referee went to the side of the pitch to review the Salah penalty incident. I still maintain that for the matchgoing fan the VAR system is a joke at the moment

24th February 2018 at 11:09 am #16445AnonymousIt may take a few years before we have a VAR system in place that we’re happy with. I still hope they bring it in to the PL next season though. Yes it will be rough around the edges but over time they can work the kinks out and it’ll all be worth it in the end. We’ll have a less contentious, divisive spectacle.

24th February 2018 at 11:46 am #16452But, Mak, isn’t one of the beauties about football is that it IS so contentious, controversial and about subjective opinion, be it from the referees or indeed the fans. I just don’t understand why people want to sanitise the game.

28th February 2018 at 8:00 pm #16819It seems to me they both had a hold on each others shirt, but the Rochdale player pulled an Ali and fell over far better than Llorente who stayed on his feet…. possibly the smallest possible ever infringement… π
