Love Anna Friel, what a babe! Loved Brookside-2nd best soap after Hollyoaks!
Cant stand Holly oaks….but they used to have some fine looking ladies on there, i have not watched in since the harrowing late night male rape episode!

4th July 2019 at 11:52 am #43004So everyone loves Brookside, thought this was supposed to be the unpopular opinion thread?!
I have one, reading Nil’s comment about the tennis reminded me and with the ongoing women’s World Cup it kinda topical.
Men and women should compete together in sport.
For tennis, this would immediately remove the “why do women get paid less?” question (because they have to play less!).
In football, if you’re good enough it shouldn’t matter what sex you are, let see you on the pitch. And if you’re not good enough, drop down to the right level like everyone else.
Sure there’d be outcry about mixed-sex boxing and MMA mind!

4th July 2019 at 12:07 pm #43006AnonymousI cant stand any of those soaps, there’s enough drama on here. Threeps, Agree and disagree. I mean you’re dead right, women wouldn’t be able to compete. As for this really really silly question of “why do women get paid less”? The market dictates price. Why don’t they ask why some women get paid more than other women? Oh because they can’t label that sexist.
The disagree part is because if women played football, they’d not only be unable to compete, they’d get destroyed. The second a man went in for a tackle, during match 1 of whatever league there was a chick, there would be uproar. It will never happen for this and other reasons. As for MMA hahaha ya… The “Ronda Rousey could beat up men” line that was perpetuated around a few years ago was just incredibly misguided. I’d “love” to have seen it, all 4 seconds of it.
Nil, it has been boring alright man, in sporting terms. I see that the Americans are loving the ladies WC. There are so many of them on reddit saying that the womens is better than the mens… hilarious.. but they say this because their men aren’t able to compete and well, womens football is a lot easier to get good at as it’s from a really small pool of the population, is in the early stages also and ya… well who cares what they think TBH.

4th July 2019 at 12:42 pm #43011Threeps I often pose the question to the feminazis why is there no women playing in the elite rugby league competition in Oz (NRL). Now Iβm not sexist at all, I have a daughter & a wife that I expect to be treated fairly in life but in the real world thereβs just some things women canβt do as well as men. I say put 7 females & 6 males in every 1st grade team in the NRL, as well as local club competitions, & see how it ends up. I guarantee there wouldnβt be many females wanting to play after 1 game. Iβll get put on the sexist for saying it but Iβm just being realistic.

4th July 2019 at 12:49 pm #43013Oz, my point isn’t to stick them in a top level team and see what happens, it’s to stick them in the correct level team and see what happens. If that’s Football Conference, then so be it, they will probably get paid more and play in front of more fans. Serena Williams at her best would probably beat a heck of a lot of top male tennis players and so would a few others.
Just play/watch sport according to the level of the sportsperson, not their sex. If they good enough, then they’re good enough.
I did say I had an unpopular opinion π

the reason the USA are streets ahead of the european teams in fitness and skill is…money
i was surprised myself thinking with all the top EU teams having a ladies side and playing top level (for them) including a champions league that they would be not only superior but years ahead, much like the mens game….
the difference comes in the schools and colleges, they have a huge budget throughout the school years across the board so ladies football has done well with amazing facilities and training from a very early age

4th July 2019 at 2:17 pm #43022Money, investment, development, faith and trust, plus allowance to actually flourish.
I think we’ve been there thereabouts with this tournament to be used ad a springboard.
I don’t think in America though there’s the goldfish bowl effect like our British media and Twitter.
No wonder one of the reasons why we’re behind because we’re too bothered about what other people think.

5th July 2019 at 10:43 pm #43078AnonymousSteve I know man. I didn’t wannas go on too far with that but you’re dead right. The amount of money put into college sports over in America and even their attitude towards it with future stars in high school, is very different to what we are used to. College football is a huge thing over there, not just the NFL. Are we missing a trick there in some sense? Maybe.. but when it comes to something so undeveloped, like women football, their approach/attitude towards it, would of course see significant, relative boosts… but won’t work when going up against something so efficiently saturated, like mens professional football. You have got to have all the ingredients, which they do not and never will have.

6th July 2019 at 6:05 am #43079That’s why although I’m against socialism always have been they do have a lot of merit where everyone can get free higher education. We could never afford that plus so many other people I know that could not either. Every system has pros and cons.

6th July 2019 at 7:18 am #43080Mak, I donβt follow American Football particularly, or their soccer, but you may know, do their teams have academies or do they let the colleges develop the players for them?….. Pagan

6th July 2019 at 7:55 am #43081AnonymousOh, to be clear, I don’t follow American Football either. I’ve only gleamed bits of information from American media. I don’t know if there are also academies but from what I know, they will give out athletic scholarships to students, who will learn in one field but will mostly be focused on their sporting careers.
I think it was my American friend who pointed out to me one time that the team Notre Dame was a college Football side. They are a good example of just how serious this is taken.
That’s their stadium. You could be forgiven for thinking that all these fans were turning up to watch an NFL game.

6th July 2019 at 9:31 am #43086NFL is basically in three stages… but it’s only the top tier that get paid although all three “stages” are basically a cash cow.
You have High School Football (played on Friday nights), which is basically up to 18 years old (generally the older kids it must be said). Players play for free but the coaches of the “better” schools generally are the best paid “teachers” around.
18-21 is college, and as Micky says above, they take it very seriously (except they don’t pay the players “officially”). They basically offer free scholarships to the best high school players, for what is basically professional teams for the ages between 18-21. As Micky showed above, it’s a seriously big business for the colleges. They play on Saturdays.
Then you have the NFL that I’m sure you all are more familiar with (and coming to a nice new shiny stadium in North London π ) They picked players from colleges once a year, with the theory that the worst teams get the best players but, like the players, the draft picks are also “swapped” around like commodities.
Let me know if you need anything else…

6th July 2019 at 5:58 pm #42982Now then fellas, hello to all the old usernames I remember.
Just gonna chuck my two cents in –
Gerrard- Sort of player your club loves to have, every other club wishes they had and hate the fact they don’t. A winner who dragged some mediocre teams over the line.
Beckham- Possibly my favourite England player as a youngster, gave everything, old fashioned wide man who could actually cross, remember crossing?? Achievef all he did with zero pace.
The Beatles – Always suspicious of someone who says they don’t like the Beatles, which version? The boyband of the early sixties or the studio albums of pepper, revolver etc. Their back catalogue is so varied there’s something in it for any music fan.
Mourinho- In terms of style, the man is finished he is relic now. He could still win a trophy or two but the style he plays now is dreadful.
My unpopular opinion- I did enjoy watching Spurs but I think they have peaked now and are heading down a trough. Ericcson, Alderweireld, Kane, Rose and Trippier will move on over the next two summers and I think Pochettino won’t be far behind._____________________________
