9th November 2021 at 1:21 pm #188702Brian, we go through all this wringing of hands and complaining every international break but people need to come to terms with the fact that internationals are an intrinsic part of football and always have been. The World Cup Finals are a bit more than one game though buddie.

9th November 2021 at 4:30 pm #188707AnonymousNine, why do we have to just accept it? I think we should be louder in our protests, or this will forever be the way it is. These useless internationals need to be done away with.

9th November 2021 at 4:37 pm #188708I’m sure the groans are widespread. I don’t particularly like it myself. It disrupts the flow and the momentum of domestic football.
There may well be justification, but people don’t have to necessarily like or accept it and they’re within their rights to express what they think and feel.

9th November 2021 at 4:48 pm #188712Nine…that is my problem….too many games before you get to the final. I know there is little that can be done to change it but the rate it is going it will be domestic football playing second fiddle to Internationals and friendlies and that cannot be right

9th November 2021 at 4:57 pm #188713Yeah I’m with you there Brian and expanding the World Cup after this one with inferior nations coming in is not a good idea imo.
We could also do with reducing the number of international friendlies in a season.
It’s the injuries on international duty that is so frustrating Pulasic for inetance has only played one full game this season the first PL game of the season after getting injured whilst playing for the USA.😡

9th November 2021 at 7:08 pm #188720Would a super league not be a better idea in the international game rather than the domestic leagues? Most of the historic power house nations would automatically qualify meaning no qualifiers are needed and the smaller nations would then play each other to qualify which would actually give them a better chance. And every country would have ranking points and all teams, even the big ones, could in theory get relegated out of the super league if they performed poorly. The idea is sort of starting with the Nations League. Why not formalise it into a super league?

9th November 2021 at 8:41 pm #188722Mikus..not a bad idea but I would schedule it at the end of Domestic seasons only. PLUS, my biggest moan…injured players…..I think FiFA/UEFA should pay for any injuries or loss of service to the club…that may make them think a little more carefully…but then again…we are talking “suits” again…they just do not want anything to upset the gravy train

9th November 2021 at 9:02 pm #188725Seeding teams is not a million miles away from the currently on hold super league, can’t have the lesser teams at the top table.
As for friendlies, whilst the games are unimportant, risk injuries and when all said and done serve little purpose for the players, they also allow kids their first trip to Wembley and in some cases their first taste of live footy, schools and grass roots clubs get the opportunity to purchase blocks of tickets, and for that reason alone I’d hate to see them disappear……..Pagan

9th November 2021 at 9:43 pm #188727The ultimate downside is trying to keep players fit. We’re being too accommodating. Of course before the redesign of the European Cup and The Uefa Cup, there were lesser matches to play. Plus the FA Cup and League Cup slotted well.
There would only be one International played on a Wednesday Night, then back to training Friday ready for Saturday. TV and the commerce that comes with it doesn’t help the Timetable as most matches in the ‘olden days’ would be played in majority on a Saturday.
People know with the obscene money involved, they have to find a way to maintain interest levels as far as playing for your country goes (which itself should be the biggest honour). The 10 + days wait really is a waiting game and some teams don’t get straight back into the groove after International duty.

9th November 2021 at 9:46 pm #188728Nil, interesting you say we’re being too accommodating playing friendlies, of course the real answer is we’re being greedy playing more CL games………..Pagan

9th November 2021 at 10:25 pm #188729Pagan, of course. Depending on how one might perceive it, what supposed to be a redesign of the European Cup into a ‘Champions League’ would consist of more games, therefore opportunity for more revenue out of it. Lots of quarters benefit and that’s unlikely to go back to how it used to be.
A Parallel drawn to when in the very early 90s, certain individuals wanted to rebrand the Top Flight League (they got their wish).
Overtime to some, playing international football has been second fiddle. And let’s be frank, some of us fans have changed our attitudes in the way we view football and what we are prioritizing.

9th November 2021 at 11:59 pm #188731so fucking over these internationals. We barely had a chance to recover from the Euros before they started back up again

10th November 2021 at 6:38 am #188732RatyRatae, the Euros ran a bit late though due to covid. Clubs and fans moan about internationals, however if they were to expand the CL to 6 teams per group earning the clubs many more millions then the clubs would embrace it, bottom line it’s all about the money…………Pagan

10th November 2021 at 6:53 am #188734It’s interesting to hear about some suggestions here, especially as the CL has now got dragged into it.
For me, and the same rule kinda applies to both the WC and CL, is there are still too many “dead-rubbers”… unless it’s my team actaully involved, I find it very hard to get excited over a group/qualifier/mini-league game in any competition. It only gets exciting when the game, either international or Euro comps, when you know it’s going to be over for one team, either failing to get out the group, or being knocked out in the knock-out stages… everything else is just boring.
Anyway you look at it, I think it’s just too much football.
I’m lucky (but no Destiny) that I can watch, if I wanted too, every single Prem game, live, over here in Finland, but I stick to the Spuds, and might watch a “Top6” clash when they open, so I can larff at the losers on here… 🙂
Burnley vs Norwich in the Prem? Spain vs Andorra in a World Cup qualifier? Would rather watch paint dry.

10th November 2021 at 7:55 am #188735I quite like Mikus’s idea of an International Super League. There’s absolutely no point in games like San Marino v England in a World Cup qualifier next Monday anything that knocks out games like that would be beneficial.
