Previous England Managers –
Sven Goran Eriksson – Poor football, no desire, big name.
Steve Mclaren – Tories lost this data in an IT Glitch.
Fabio Capello – Poor Football, no desire, big name.
Roy Hodgson – Poor football, no desire.
Gareth Southgate – Ok Football, fair bit of passion, maybe a bit generic?Honestly baffles me the criticism Southgate gets. Please try and remember the last 20 years fellas, watching England since losing the passion of youth has not been enjoyable. GS imo is the best manager i’ve seen for England. Can anyone honestly say we’ve had a better one in the last 20 or 30 years?

14th June 2021 at 2:13 pm #180425Harry, I agree that the team seems more spirited and passionate in recent years and I have no personal animosity against Southgate, but I see him more as an overseer of things than a manager. And yes, we just aren’t producing many good managers so there aren’t many alternatives. It’s where we are. So a step in the right direction after the debacle over the last few decades? Yes. But the culture remains a problem and we really do need to rein in the ridiculous hype and expectation as well as needing to stop inflating egos. The problem with all the broadcasters is that they feel they have to be super positive about everything and all the pundits then have to follow that narrative so everyone has the blinkers on. Perhaps if we start being more grounded and realistic we might start seeing the wood for the trees so we can more clearly see what else we need to do. But what also remains a problem I think is the premier league vs England. I think the league is still where most of the fan interest is, and that England in tournaments is just a bit of fun that we get carried away with but quickly forget.

14th June 2021 at 2:23 pm #180426Agree with my old pal Harry. Southgate wouldn’t have been my choice as Manager but under the current FA requirements of they must be English I can’t think of a better English Manager.
He took England to the World Cup Semi Finals for the first time since 1990. I doubt England will win the Euros but they’ll get out of the Group and then you just never know as we’ve seen already in European Club competitions this season.
Everyone will have their favourites as to who should be playing but if we had all voted for the team to play Croatia I doubt there would be much more than two or three changes to the side Southgate chose. Similarly with the selected squad I doubt there would be more than 4 or 5 changes.
Before the game I would have gone for Grealish over Sterling but Sterling played well and I would have gone for either recognised left back over Trippier but I get why Southgate went with Trippier.
Very difficult job being the England Manager as you get criticised when you win and criticised when you lose and the expectations of the country are often greater than the strength of the team. Personally I think we’re very close to being a pretty good team.

14th June 2021 at 2:39 pm #180427Fair point Mikus, re culture change. I think there is far more team spirit in the national team than ever before, and we’re seeing fruition of that on the pitch. A lack of club egos clashing is a step in the right direction, with the only real ego in the squad being that of Kane, given his status probably not a bad thing.
I won’t ever say it’s coming home again, until it’s in the bloody bag and on the contents insurance, but I do have a good feeling about this team.
Lampard is my pick for next man in charge 9. Though I think his heart is in club management.

14th June 2021 at 2:48 pm #180428Harry, I think Frank needs a bit more Club managerial experience before that happens but he’s definitely a potential candidate going forwards. Cheers 9’s

14th June 2021 at 3:19 pm #180430In previous years it was the pl culture
Seen an interesting interview with Rio and that generation and he said the club rivalry when competing at the top inhibited the team
They all seem a lot more pally these days_____________________________

14th June 2021 at 3:53 pm #180433I’d be fine with someone like Lampard at U21 or younger but he shouldn’t even be in the conversation for the senior job.

14th June 2021 at 4:03 pm #180435Expectations of Scotland were enormous it’s hard to deal with that but Scotland made chances.
Makes Fridays game more difficult for England as Scotland will know that it’s almost certainly over if they lose.
Thought Robertson was fantastic today especially in the first half.
Hoddle still talks a lot of sense as a pundit, he went a bit weird towards the end of his tenure though Sean. I agree though Hoddle and Venables were the best two English Managers we’ve had in the last 25 years.

14th June 2021 at 4:10 pm #180437sean – El Tel is a prat, and is only remembered fondly because he had Gazza. Hoddle was unlucky with Becks’ red card but also didn’t do anything with England. What measure are you using to say they were better than Southgate?
Re Lampard, if there is a superior English Manager who should be next in line, I’m all ears fellas. I don’t seem to hold the job in the same esteem the rest of you do. The best managers in world football don’t want to manage national teams. Name one country that has what you would call one of the world’s best managers in charge.

14th June 2021 at 4:25 pm #180438Nine, I watched this because I wanted to see what Englands next two teams offer. Scotland, a lot of “huff and puff”. cannot fault the effort but Cheq had “guile and patience”and that is what Scotland short of. I am sure they will be doubly up for the England game where Cheq will be much of the same.

14th June 2021 at 5:29 pm #180441I canβt be bothered to be honest Harry. If you think southgate is a better manager then Glenn hoddle or Terry v then fine by me mate. Itβs not even a debate but thatβs your opinion chum

14th June 2021 at 6:16 pm #180442A thought from yesterday, is Henderson now backup for England? I can’t see how, even when fit, he replaces anyone in the midfield.

14th June 2021 at 6:19 pm #180443Really not getting the Lampard for Engerland calls at all, Gerrard perhaps, but Lampard?? Never in a month of Sunday’s is he ready for Engerland. Might as well put Nil or Buffy in charge, at least they’ll have the rest of us in the backroom staff.
