I don’t think Southgate bottled it, I think mistakes may have been made but that’s different. Southgate has a semi final and final as England manager, only sir alf can top that. So while mistakes may have been made what’s clear is Southgate is a man who is learning how to be a top international manager and coming on leaps and bounds like his team.
Well done Gareth and England, learn from this and apply it at the world Cup which will be here very soon.

Experienced pros let a 19yo take the final pen of a major international tournament. Southgate also shares the blame in that. Everyone that had a hand in Saka taking that final penalty is a complete prat. You highlighted that Sterling and grealish don’t take pens for their clubs, I said who cares because Maguire, who doesn’t either, buried his. That miss might mentally cripple Saka, one of the more seasoned pros could probably deal with it a little better. I fail to see how I’m spouting some sort of Pro English narrative.
You quite often say “I can’t be bothered, or I’ll leave you to your stupidity” when someone challenges you Sean. Forums should be for debate, not arrogant finger waving.

I think Italy deserve tremendous credit. They were shook by the early goal and couldn’t lay a glove on England for the first half. The way chiellini started getting high in left channel in second half made all the difference. While a more experienced and confident England would have seen that as an opportunity, this side were too scared of letting Italy play through middle to counter it and just got forced deeper and deeper. The movement of the Italians off the ball in possession was a class above to be fair.

Agree with all of that Cityboy54. Shaw has been immense. He should have been a Penalty-taker. Small Margins that make the difference and what I do see is a common denominator in those who missed were inexperienced, not confident enough or lacked game time (in wheels being oiled).
What I also noticed was our defense was rabbit in headlights in the second half and Italy were all over us. I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually succumbed to an equalizer. Henderson would have tried and ease some of that pressure off.
Kick in the teeth to some degree because we really could have ended a 55 year wait.

Lucky, I think the team is a little saturated with in experienced players who perhaps are still short of confidence. It lacks of a player for the big occasion.
And let’s be honest, we don’t have that flamboyance. We’re too nice too and I’ve mentioned on this thread before that Cellini is dirty and will do a number on us.
He should have been sent off in my eyes denying Saka a potential goal-scoring opportunity but the Ref turned a blind eye.

Ed, @ 9:24, completely agree and you’ve hit the nail on the head.
That would be my one and only criticism on Southgate. There’s no emotion coming from him. It’s almost as if he’s already accepted defeat. You have to be the spearhead and be able to pass down an aura of confidence and self-belief. You have to galvanize your players, but I didn’t see that.
I don’t know perhaps in the more distant future whether somebody like the Brighton Manager will be given an opportunity. Somebody too maybe with a little bit about them and be positively infectious on the players.

Nil, chiellini is an absolute legend and his performance last night was unbelievable. He got a deserved yellow for that foul.
He wasn’t just amazing defensively, he was almost in final 3rd during italys build up at times always there as a pivot for the players ahead who were moving around like prime barca.

Lucky, in a way he reminded me of Rudiger in the Champions League Final.
Luke Shaw has it in him, but I think a trick was missed in not bringing on and keeping with Jordan Henderson. England need a robust Box-to-Box midfielder or a midfielder that will protect the back 4 and be a diamond in the rough ala Cellini.

We don’t have an International Match now till September. I have wholeheartedly enjoyed our journey. We came Super Close to ending 55 years of hurt.
I’ll try not to moan now when there are International Breaks during the domestic season, because I’ll know these will be important matches for us.
We need to build from this experience and come back Better.

At least i’m venting my anger on here aye Sean. I honestly don’t mean to come across as aggressive. I will rarely post to simply agree with someone though, unless it’s mid conversation. I do mainly post to disagree with someone or to vent. From a personal mental health perspective it works quite well for me, i will try to do better at not negatively impacting others though and feel free to call me out on it in future and remind me of this post.
