11th July 2021 at 10:54 pm #181590Sorry, but bringing on two subs to take penalties in the last few mins who have barely even touched the ball is far from ideal. Have sympathy with Rashford & Sancho.

11th July 2021 at 10:57 pm #181592Totally agree Mikus. Big bo bo. But Tbh Italy were the better team overall and deserved it.

11th July 2021 at 10:59 pm #181593Ah what a pity. The one game were I think southgate got it wrong. Sit back after the 2nd minute abd just park the bus. Bizarre subs at the end.
Really feel for southgate. Italy deserved it on the night. Better side. Sorry guys but terrible performance from England in a final. Just show a bit of fucking balls ffs and have a go after going 1-0 up
Sorry to be having a go after a great tournament but that’s frustrating. Conservative approach will only get you so far.

11th July 2021 at 11:00 pm #181594Said it before, and I’ll say it again, any fuckwit player who does that spastic dipshit retard run-up deserves all the shit they get. Dumb-fuckers.

11th July 2021 at 11:03 pm #181595I’m so sorry lads. It’s hard not to argue that Italy were the better team but at half time I thought England were in control. Italy were different class second half.
It was a lot of pressure to bring rashford and sancho on just for pens, Hardly touched a ball all competition but they will feel personally responsible for the loss and I can’t imagine the pressure they would have felt.

11th July 2021 at 11:04 pm #181596AnonymousI knew it was a mistake to let young players take penalties, real stupid of Southgate but anyway Italy were the better side for virtually the whole game except extra time.

Indeed Sean. Sancho at least should have come on way earlier.

11th July 2021 at 11:09 pm #181598Sorry, England and England fans. I really thought England would run Italy over after Shaw’s goal. Italy were visibly shaken after that start.
Italy fought back and England allowed them to.
It’s always a lottery when it comes to penalties. I feel sorry for the Young English lads especially 19 year old Saka. He should never have to stand with that responsibility and pressure. Why didn’t some of the senior players step up? Sterling? Stones?
And Southgate? Perhaps he was too defensive, and so penalties truly is his fate._____________________________

11th July 2021 at 11:12 pm #181599The World Cup isn’t far away, and England has a pretty young team with lots of potential. Is Walker at 31-32 the oldest?

11th July 2021 at 11:18 pm #181600Bugger! A good final to watch though, lots of ebbs and flows. I think if anything this proved that Southgate’s fine margins tactics are our undoing here. Shows that even the best defence in the comp can concede unlucky goals if you invite continued waves of pressure on yourselves. Credit to Southgate though, he’s achieved what legendary coaches for England couldn’t and so for that he should be praised.
Thought Mount was lucky to start even before a ball was kicked, he did nothing the whole game. Philips yet again a one-man midfield. He is collossal! Regardless of the pens, for which you can’t fault anyone, the occasion got to Saka, he was very poor and thought Sancho should have come on earlier instead._____________________________

11th July 2021 at 11:21 pm #181601I have to disagree with you there Mightymoos. I think we were the better side in the first half, they completely dominated every minute in the second, we took the first half of extra time and then second I think was just playing for pens on both sides

11th July 2021 at 11:29 pm #181602Afraid under pressure southgate bottled it..he brought henderson on then took him off.. ..we needed guys on and he didnt do it until too late..then two players who had hardly kicked a ball took a penalty…shaw should have taken one and grealish….a more of attacking team in the first place would have rattled them

11th July 2021 at 11:33 pm #181603Don’t also understand Southgate choices of penalty takers, TBH I thought after they equalized Italy would go on to win but officially it ended as a draw. I understand you need penalties in the KO phases for teams to go through but I think if a final ends in a draw after extra time both teams should be joint winners of a competition. No need for penalties in a final.

11th July 2021 at 11:36 pm #181605Nah, I think pens plays an important part of what makes our game so great! There is no other sport on earth that has the suspense and drama that football has and pens plays an important role in that. No one wants joint-winners status!

11th July 2021 at 11:37 pm #181606I too was surprised by Hendo going off, I thought he would be a sure fire pen taker

11th July 2021 at 11:39 pm #181607AnonymousFox just look at the stats, they had 65% possession, you can’t get that by being only the better team in one half. I don’t think anyone in England had a great game except for our defence.

12th July 2021 at 12:05 am #181609Yeah you can. You can get it (hypothetically) by having 60-40 in the first half and by only having 20-80 in the second half. I don’t think it was as clear cut as you state it was.
Also, if we go on possession alone, then England should never have got to the final, you could argue. Their entire tactics are not to dominate ball possession (much to my dislike and part of why I am not a fan of Southgate’s)_____________________________

12th July 2021 at 12:10 am #181610But, I do agree with your underlying point. At the end of the day, to truly control a game, you need to control the ball and to control the ball you need to have the ball. Southgate’s tactics from day one he has been in charge is not about that, especially against better teams. He takes the very conservative and pragmatic approach. It’s what has got us to the final but it’s also what’s lost us the final. You live by the sword, you die by it. I would like to see him build from this and start instilling more belief in some quality possession and attacking football. He has progressed, I think since WC2018. He seems to have learned a lot defensively, but in doing so we’ve lost the attacking verve we had in that WC.
