5th July 2021 at 1:51 am #181351@Mancunian_mike. Honestly mate, all I keep hearing are excuses for Southgate. “Oh, he got dealt a shit hand”, “but he’s trying to bring through youth”, “he’s still building a squad”. The bottom line is, he’s been in charge for the best part of five years now with all of those excuses. At what point are we allowed to start expecting results and real pushes to win something? I mean, let’s be honest, that’s the point of all this, isn’t it? If we are happy with Semi finals then we are simply willing to just accept mediocrity. We should want and expect more than that. The dirty finger smeller from Germany did all of the above AND won a World Cup within 6 years.
What’s Southgate’s goal here? Does he even aspire to win a major tournament. If so, which one? What’s the plan? How long do we keep “rebuilding” for? At some point you have to settle on a side and style of play, an identity at least. I’m just not seeing any of this so far hence my frustrations._____________________________

5th July 2021 at 7:34 am #181353Foxy – What on earth are you talking about. We haven’t even conceded a goal. Explain how Glen Hoddle or Terry Venables acheived anything other than Mediocrity with England? Youre vendetta against Southgate is far more apparent than any excuses being made for him. You’re going out of your way to make it seem like we’re not having a good tournament so far. The wheels might come odd against Denmark, feel free to whinge to your hearts content if and when that happens.

5th July 2021 at 8:00 am #181354999 – all the best, mate, for your chemo. Don’t suppose it will be much fun, but just think of the end result. Wishing you all the best, and I hope Southgate and his boys give you a lift over the next week.

5th July 2021 at 8:28 am #181356Foxy, I’m Welsh and haven’t a clue what you are so confused about. What is Southgate’s goal? I am pretty sure it is to win a major competition, 2 semi finals in a row suggests he is doing as good a job as anyone since sir alf.

5th July 2021 at 2:10 pm #181362Well I’m back off down to London tomorrow and will be at the Semi Final on Wednesday. Lets all get behind Southgate instead of whinging and whining at every decision he makes. He’s proving he knows what he is doing and he sure as hell knows more than the likes of us! It’s coming home!

5th July 2021 at 6:48 pm #181365I actually agree with Tugay’s sentiments; we’re at the point of time and the stage of the tournament where we should channel our energy into getting behind the team and manager. So be it.
We’ve had the most challenging of 18 or so months. Let’s give it our all get into the final for Sunday.

5th July 2021 at 7:33 pm #181367Foxey, sorry mate but I just donโt see where youโre coming from. You seem to think that managing at international level is just like managing a club side. It really isnโt. I donโt hear people making excuses for Southgate, I, like others, are trying to point out the difficulties all international managers face as there seem to be a lot of people in the media who, like you, seem to think you just pick the 11 best players and they will win comfortably, they will all immediately gel, and if you want to play more exciting football you just stick more attackers on the pitch; sorry mate but it just doesnโt work like that. International teams have to build team spirit from nothing, have to learn how each other play in very little time, save energy where possible in a congested tournament format and all whilst dealing with the pressure and expectation of an entire nation. These are not excuses, these are facts.

6th July 2021 at 12:51 am #181369Mike, I 100% agree with you. My point is, how do you build that momentum by changing your players all the time? I’d love to see the stats, but I would bet my house on Southgate blooding more new players than any other manager in our history, or at least over such a relatively short period of time. Now blooding new players is really important, don’t get me wrong, but not at the expense of momentum which in turn helps players and teams gel is not. As I mentioned earlier, going into this tournament, bar Kane, we had no idea which other 10 players he was going to select!
Dirty Harry. Maybe I do have something against Gareth. All I can go off is by what I see and that is on the big stage we are made to look really average against poor opposition (Ukraine excepted). Facts are we have achieved the semis twice, sure you can only beat what has been put in front of you but we have been so incredibly lucky with our draws and have looked bang average to boot against those teams. As for your comment about Venables and Hoddle, not sure what that has to do with anything. For what it’s worth, Hoddle was a twat with a huge ego and Venables achieved a great team ethos and wasn’t given the chance to see where he could take that squad.
I do believe that Southgate is out of his depth. I hope to be proven wrong but I really struggle to get excited about beating average sides by one goal and having very little flow in our football.
Maybe I have too high expectations. I’m certainly not the singing “it’s coming home” brigade._____________________________

6th July 2021 at 8:07 am #181370Foxy – You said they were better managers for England. The evidence says they werent. You keep calling international teams bang average, by the same token Leicester should have never won the league. Funny old game football isn’t it.
