Foxy, Southgate has had to rebuild the England set-up from the shambles it was in. If you recall back when he was given the job, prior to the last World Cup, he was scouting at almost every EPL game because England had few quality players to choose from. He has selected youth out of necessity but those players need time in competitive matches to knit together and learn what it means to play in international games, including experiencing the pressure. Over the last 2 years, due to Covid, Southgate has had no opportunity to test, or bed in, any of the recently emerging talent (Grealish, Foden, Saka, Bellingham, Sancho, Philips, James, etc.); and so now he is having to do it on the fly, and he is (I think wisely) choosing to make the team difficult to beat first, to make sure we play more games and gain more experience, before committing more and more players to the attack. He is technically further behind in the rebuilding of the national team than Germany, Netherlands or even Spain are, and yet he is achieving better results with England, in less time and with less experience, than their managers and teams are. It will come but is not an overnight fix, be patient π

1st July 2021 at 10:55 am #181143Foxy, Good accurate point on tactics. I get the impression, it’s the opposite in implementation. We couldn’t create as many chances until Grealish came on.
Looked like the formation had changed and there was more movement and passing options to get the cross into the danger area, effectively pulling apart Germany’s defense.
I was cautious of us leaving this too late in the match and going into extra time meaning more physical demand.
It’s Cagey and and Cat and Mouse. Some teams are happy just to plod along and try and Capitalize and or press the opposition unexpectedly.
The Players need to be able to believe and trust in themselves with a 1-0 lead to go on to score more goals. A little bit of good fortune for us with the experienced Muller missing the target.
I think above all Southgate will always try and be measured.

1st July 2021 at 11:28 am #181145I think we all accept the conservative approach isnβt a bad thing in one sense regarding knockout games where mistakes need to be minimised. But at some point we obviously have to start taking more risks to actually score and itβs ultimately about finding that balance and this is clearly what Southgate is grappling with in each game. Weβve found a way so far but that has been heavily dependent on Sterling who is a very positive player and can run with the ball into the final third. A high press on occasions can help, but isnβt really sustainable. Itβs a link man we really need in midfield. Not sure Henderson is that man. Thereβs Bellingham but heβs maybe deemed not experienced enough to be starting games. Yes he could come on later, but as Foxy says, this is effectively just playing the percentages and margins to stay in the game for longer then try and start going for it as the clock ticks down and the game starts opening up, but then both teams will potentially be more open. We really need a more thought out attacking plan earlier in the game which at least will lead us to having more chances and shots on target.

1st July 2021 at 12:37 pm #181146Well what an experience that was! Was sat behind the goal near the front and the atmosphere was incredible. Can’t wait to go back to Wembley next week for the Semi-Final, just got to hope we beat the Ukraine first! It’s coming home!

1st July 2021 at 4:40 pm #181160Potential tie against Denmark in the semis could be very tricky. They will have a feeling of its our time again after everything thats happened. Tournament football quite quite often doesnt come down to the best team on paper.

1st July 2021 at 6:51 pm #181161Mikus…agree with what you say but I also think an early goal would benefit the game as well but then you have to drive on for the next not sit back and play around the back line.

1st July 2021 at 6:55 pm #181162Mikus…also agree…we have no “lineman”. henderson is the nearest and he is not a 90 minute player at this level now but he has good experience. I would not mind starting with him but only for 45 minutes, no longer

2nd July 2021 at 1:42 am #181172I personally think that link up midfield player we are looking for is Ward-Prowse, have done for a while but Southgate doesn’t seem to rate him

2nd July 2021 at 7:54 am #181174How can any manager even consider playing anyone that can not last a full game is bordering on madness even if it was Pele or Best, it’s a 90+ minute game and anyone that is selected must be able to last the full game. Theres definitely a need for more creativety especially in the final 3rd, Grealish is really the only one but Southgate needs to find another one, it’s probably the reason why Kane is battling. Anyway we should get past Ukraine although as we have seen they must not be taken lightly.

2nd July 2021 at 8:16 am #181175Harry, I thought Denmark were excellent versus wales. They played some brilliant football. They started slowly then moved christian into midfield and just took over.
Tugay nice one mate. Pity tomorrow is not at Wembley as what an atmosphere. Football is really about the fans. Really makes such a difference
One player who has impressed me in the euros is the Ukraine number 9 yarmchuck is a quality player and their danagervman. Scored some good goals

2nd July 2021 at 10:22 am #181180I mean, if I had to choose a team to knock us out, it would be Denmark. What a story it would be if they could go on and win it. England need to get past Ukraine though first. No such thing as a given in knockout games

2nd July 2021 at 2:12 pm #181185Cβmon Ed, surely Denmark have already had their βunlikely underdog winningβ story; even Greece have had one, isnβt it Englandβs turn π

2nd July 2021 at 2:15 pm #181186Blaze, surely we already have 3 good midfield link players? Grealish, Mount and Foden can, and do, play that role for their clubs (Foden only occasionally though). Iβm hoping g Southgate is just waiting until the team bed in a little more before trying it. I would love to see him try it against Ukraine.

2nd July 2021 at 2:46 pm #181187Mike, don’t get me wrong, I’m behind England all the way. I just mean, given the choice, I’d want Denmark to be the ones to do it in the event we couldn’t. It would make a hell of a montage with the whole Eriksen thing and, who knows, maybe he could even lift the trophy at the end. Would be quite fitting. But forget that, come on England! π
