And for those bashing Trippier, during the qualifiers and World Cup 2018, and the qualifiers and Euro 2020 so far, the only player who has created more chances is KDB for Belguim…

29th June 2021 at 7:54 pm #181073Ed, I think the call for chilwell to play our maybe a small bit of club bias 😝 no in all seriousness, shaw was the best left back in the league last season. Going forward and defending. He was exceptional and showed again tonight how dangerous he is going forward
Chilwell was nothing special under frank. Under tuchel it took him a while to cement his place with Alonso being rotated a bit until he made the position his own. Chilwell was excellent in the cl final but shaw had a much better season then him.

29th June 2021 at 8:06 pm #181074Stones and Maguire excellent
Shaw played his best game.
Sterling overall Englands best player over the four games.
Grealish with some creativity makes a difference
Walker very important in a back threeCouldnt be more pleasec!

29th June 2021 at 8:10 pm #181075Sean, Chilwell is a quality LB, too. I’d not complain at all if he played over Shaw. I only ever took issue with the comments that the reason for picking Chilwell were because Shaw didn’t offer enough going forwards which, anyone who’s watched Shaw all season, will know is just so inaccurate.
I was completely wrong about Sterling though. I thought he was lucky to be starting the first game but he’s been excellent.

29th June 2021 at 8:15 pm #181076Adlab…you forgot Stones, a quiet but very effective game which allowed Maguire to move up. I thought Maguire was MotM actually with Sterling close. Kane did nothing, apart from nod in the second, he looks far from being fit and missed a lot of intercepts which a lively forward would have got to. I still think Grealish and Foden should have started, they would have run the Germans ragged. However, it was a good win so I am pleased for the team who put in a good shift to day

29th June 2021 at 8:48 pm #181077I think the criticism of Kane is a tad unfair from pundits/media etc as there’s no service. England don’t create much. They created about 4 chances today and two were goals. He doesn’t drop deep either like he does at spurs so he’s not really involved.
Not sure he got many chances created for him in the previous 3 games. He’s clearly not 100% fit either

29th June 2021 at 9:01 pm #181078🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️🍬Great to be through.
I felt in majority we looked comfortable but tired legs inevitably showed though we delivered when it mattered.
Tried our best to watch at work with minimal ‘disturbance’ 😺😼😇
We have a Date this Saturday Night😎⚽️

29th June 2021 at 9:41 pm #181081Ed, I think Shaw has justified his selection every time and been fantastic for you. Great for England to know that should Shaw pick up injury or get suspended in later rounds they have chilwell to come in. It’s a very strong squad when you look at mate.
To be fair Ed I never given Southgate much respect but he has been so bold and calculated and is carrying himself ever so well. Like he said the change today would have killed him if they lost but his only concern was how to maximise the probability of England beating Germany, he believed the change was needed and was spot on.
Notably mourinho was amongst pundits who argued for the change ahead of the game and he also said earlier in the tournament that he thinks England are tactically very strong, that was crystal clear to everyone else today. As much as the narrative is Sterling proving people wrong it should be Southgate too.

29th June 2021 at 10:28 pm #181083He’s such a class act as well, Southgate. He’s not the most charismatic, expansive coach but I get the feeling the players are very much enjoying playing for him.

29th June 2021 at 11:08 pm #181086I think the team is much less infected by the fierce club rivalries that have affected previous teams. And I think Southgate is very good at keeping the players grounded. Key question is if we can go up many more notches.

29th June 2021 at 11:46 pm #181087For fear of sounding negative, I’m really not getting excited. Germany have played one decent game this entire finals so far and were poor (they are below Denmark in the FIFA rankings). Both sides were set up to nullify each other and really it was always going to be fine margins that wins it. Muller slots that easy chance and it’s a whole other game.
We are not playing well and we are certainly not using the talent we have. Basically, we have been reliant on one single player all comp for our attack, Sterling! Southgate is so conservative it is boring to watch. He has survived this far simply because he keeps getting incredibly flukey draws._____________________________

30th June 2021 at 6:41 am #181088Great result for England and a half decent performance but I’m not getting carried away it’s one game at a time and let’s see where that takes us.

30th June 2021 at 8:03 am #181089I really don’t understand the “On another day Muller puts that away” comments. It wasnt another day, he missed. On another day we might have won 7 nil. Has as much relevance.

30th June 2021 at 1:22 pm #181090Don’t fear it Foxy, you definitely sound negative 😂
In fear of sounding positive, I’d be amazed if fans of other countries put their team and manager down as much as England fans do. Southgate and his relatively young and inexperienced squad have, in the last 3 tournaments, gotten to the World Cup semi-final (eventually finishing 4th) doing as well as any England team ever has apart from 66; came 3rd in the inaugural Nations League (yes I know it’s a bobbins competition) and have now booked an eminently winnable quarter final against Ukraine in the European Championships; if we were, somehow, to win that it’d be only the second time ever England had gotten this far in the tournament – even the 66 squad only got to the semi’s in 68.
Southgate and his team are gaining experience, learning how to defend solidly and be bloody difficult to beat, something very few England sides could boast of in the past; together they are burying past ghosts (the Germany curse for one) and they are getting better and more confident with every game. I agree they are not flamboyant and exciting in attack…yet…but they are learning, they are succeeding and they are developing. For a country with 1 trophy to its name in 100 years of competition I would think there’d be a bit more praise. And for anyone saying ‘look who we’ve played’ or ‘England had an easy route’ remember there are no easy games at international level – just look at the results in this tournament so far…or ask France 😂

30th June 2021 at 2:06 pm #181093Mancunian Mike – It’s a complete myth we’ve had an easy run this time around. The Czechs and Croats are no mugs, never have been, especially at international tournaments. Couple that with a fierce domestic rival and it’s a pretty challenging group. Then our first knockout game is against Germany, who we haven’t beaten in a tournament since 66.
