How curious so many want to finish 2nd or third to get an “easy team” in the next round abs not want to face a top team… with 7 points we would surely be a match for any team? It’s like people want another World Cup run of easy fodder so we can get “a bit further” before we inevitably go out to a genuine top team 🤔
Which will of course keep Gareth’s stock high 😁😁😁Nancy shame on Finland so close I thought the might be the new Iceland 😉

22nd June 2021 at 9:00 am #180693Sorry Ed, I meant finish 2nd to avoid France’s group. If we come 2nd we play whoever finishes 2nd in group E (which looks easier on paper than playing France, Germany or Portugal).
Steveo, if the aim of this tournament for England is to keep progressing, developing the system so it works better, and gaining more experience of international tournament football for our younger players, there is little point in aiming to face the favourites in the first knock out game and potentially going home. Do you remember who France beat in the first knock out round on their way to winning the 1998 World Cup…neither do I…but I remember they lost the opening game to Senegal; few remember the path you take, just that you got there 😉

22nd June 2021 at 9:10 am #180695I know we should get behind our guys and place more faith, but when you see the quality of other teams as we have done so far, it can make you think deep down that we’ll be founded out.
Where’s the Leadership coming from and the Grit? We have a young squad, but there’s a lack of experience and maturity. A fully fit Henderson definitely missed.
We need to implement something different in our style – too one dimensional with Kane. Let’s take off the shackles and play with freedom and courage and see where we are. We really need a confidence booster tonight.

22nd June 2021 at 9:29 am #180696We’ve looked pretty good at the back but only offered sporadic attacks up-front. We’ve got plenty of gifted individual players but we’re still developing a team so it’s a little understandable. Maybe Southgate should be further on, maybe not, but it’s been hard to get game time for any of them through Covid, and several were missing in the warm up games due to participating in European finals, so I give him the benefit of the doubt. The best teams I’ve seen so far have largely been together for over a decade (Belgium and Italy) so they look slick, whilst many of the others are in the same position as England and trying to work out how best to get their teams to play successfully.

22nd June 2021 at 9:39 am #180697Italy look Brilliant Mike from what I’ve seen so far. The Dutch too were a joy to watch the way they’re cutting open the opposition.
Unfortunately at the moment, we haven’t been in reality exciting to watch.

22nd June 2021 at 9:47 am #180698Ah so we should now want to play easy teams as we are not ready for the tournament and developing? I thought we were or should be ready by now you’re meant to peak at the finals unless in some kind of transition phase
But we have a squad of players we’re the cheapest is about £40m up £150 m yet to afraid to play a decent team
Surely you can’t have it both ways we are either good enough or not
No point saying we got to the semis if we only play smaller nations and barely scrape by those 😁For all my doom and gloom seems we are all not so far apart after all 😁

22nd June 2021 at 9:50 am #180699I honestly don’t think others are tho Mike
I think the Dutch Italians Germans and French and Portuguese and indeed many of the smaller nations by virtue of being small have settled squads and know there style of play well
I don’t think we do personally it’s neither one nor the other
We don’t concede many and that’s to be commended but then we rarely look like we are really actually trying to win
The only time we do if ever is when it’s all on the line abs by then it’s to late_____________________________

22nd June 2021 at 10:27 am #180700Stevo, as an Arsenal fan you wouldn’t want to draw City at the Etihad in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup would you?😊
If we turn up both France and Germany are beatable imo.

22nd June 2021 at 11:49 am #180701To be momentarily more positive about England, being good defensively is actually not a bad thing, particularly in tournaments because being more defensive can make the team more resolute and firmly concentrated on the job in hand – this is important in cup/tournament games where every game is important and so you’re can’t afford to make many mistakes. If you look at many of our exits over the years, they’re usually very narrowly beaten exits and indeed many have been lost on penalties. So if we could just get even marginally better up top, it would make such a huge difference. That’s where a big focus needs to be in coming years – getting better and more fluid up top. Hard to see that under someone like Southgate – but at the same time you obviously don’t want to sacrifice our more solid defence under him. It would almost be tempting to bring in an assistant ‘attacking’ coach but I think that would just cause more confusion.

22nd June 2021 at 12:01 pm #180704999 I wouldn’t want to but then Arsenal aren’t anywhere near city as a team or squad and we would likely get beat by the first good team we play unless we get a couple of fluky wins like we did against city and Chelsea the last time we won
We won I’m happy but no one could say we deserve it or played well we played like small team abs defended with our lives and took our few chancesEngland could do that of course but the point is people on here are saying England are much better national than Arsenal are domestically
I’m na saying they should be but are not
Apples and orangesIt’s not the winning or losing tho winning is preferable it’s the being able to win and looking like we could or should win rather than what we currently get

22nd June 2021 at 1:10 pm #180705Wrong World Cup Mike. France lost to Senegal in 2002 not 1998.

22nd June 2021 at 1:27 pm #180706Stevo, it is Apples and Oranges but nobody remembers the best team on the day only who progressed.
I don’t think anyone on here has got carried away with England’s chances of winning the Euros and the majority on here seem to have been realistic of England’s chances from the start.
Of course England fans would love England to win the Euros but we have to be realistic and say there will be a lot of good teams left in the competition after the Group stages,, it’s not impossible but an awful lot would have to go for us.

22nd June 2021 at 2:14 pm #180708I’m probably muddying the waters 999
I just think my pessimistic view is actually more a realistic view but the most frustrating thing is we shouldn’tWe should as fans with this team and squad at least feel confident as any other top nation does not to say they will win but very much could by being a good team and showing it on the pitch
That’s my only beef with Southgate as I think he is holding back our potential during a time we have a decent squad to step up a bit

22nd June 2021 at 2:53 pm #180709I. have never considered us as the short odds as stated, but you play what is in front of you, that is the challenge, not which team you play. Lots of good teams all capable of winning and loosing in the competition. I just watch the odd game but it appeared to me that many of the players who play in the EPL look cream crackered to me, what they will be like when our season starts I do not like thinking about.

22nd June 2021 at 2:59 pm #180711ED…I have changed my mind about Kane. I think Pep now wants him to fill the gap when Delap moves up from the Academy and Kane will have a guaranteed place with the Academy, after changing his age , of course.

22nd June 2021 at 3:27 pm #180712England’s problem is so obvious it stares anybody who watches football in the face. It is the lack of midfield creativity. Ok we dont have KDB but why oh why doo we play two holding midfielders? The front three are not getting any service and are having to come back for the ball. That takes an attacker away from the final third leaving the oppo defense only having to look after two. I feel this is Southgate’s defensive instinct.
Mount cant play so for me the midfield would be Rice, Grealish and Foden …..At least there is some creativity. Please no Henderson or anybody else who wants to pass sideways. We have already qualified do lets play with freedom and attack. I also think Walker is better at RB but thats marginal._____________________________

22nd June 2021 at 3:38 pm #180713Kane for £100m is bonkers but then football finances are.
Levy not agreeing when Spurs have so much debt is stupid. I think he believes his own hype as a tough negotiator. If he was that good why are Spurs so bad? Also ask the question why have average managers turned the Spurs job down?_____________________________
