John Barnes – The Voice Of Reason
Something made out of nothing on Bernardo Silva’s Tweet on Mendy being compared to a Cartoon character.
It was a bit of light-hearted fun.

26th September 2019 at 11:30 am #48516I think it is just an example of the problem with organisations like Kick It Out. They are necessary social organisations that are founded on very sound intentions, but as soon as the money and funding comes in there is an incentive to find as many examples of racism as possible as a way to justify its continued existence and need for funding.
I would hope Kick It Out can recognise this because if they continue to take stances like this over silly incidents they are going to ruin their own reputation, and that would be a very bad thing imo as in principle the organisation is a positive force.

26th September 2019 at 3:14 pm #48565Kick it out need a sense of reality, going after incidents like this will not do there cause any good at all. What is the next step all white players to have white shoe laces and others have black ones??? It is all nonsense Bernado Silva is a wonderful character at City, from what I have observed always polite and his best friend is Mendy….who teases him all the time

2nd October 2019 at 5:58 pm #49063Absolute rubbish this is in my opinion. Would there be this uproar if Silva said stones looked like mickey mouse?
Of course not. Now pep under investigation and Silva could get 6 Game ban?
Just ridiculous. Itβs so silly

2nd October 2019 at 6:34 pm #49065Sean, I do think because of the history of black stereotyping in culture and its use in marketing like the conguitos mascot, that we should refrain from using images like Silva did. I believe there was no malice or racism intended from Silva, but totally understand how many people are offended by it.
For me where society, and organisations like Kick it out fail here, is in our reaction. We are too quick to label people as racist and attaching intentions to things people say on a whim or in jest without really thinking. All Silva needs is a little historical information about that image and an explanation as to why it is offensive, he doesnt deserve to be demonised as a racist or banned from playing any games, neither does Pep deserve any reprimand for standing up for the character of a player and a human being he knows very well.

2nd October 2019 at 7:45 pm #49070AnonymousKick it out is actually a racist organization themselves. They need to be kicked out.

2nd October 2019 at 8:19 pm #49074So this is potentially a 6 game ban yet when a crowd makes nasty racist chants nothing is done or at best a tiny fine. Ridiculous.

2nd October 2019 at 8:53 pm #49090This is ridiculously overthought and analysed. Mentally painful.
Who gets offended? Those with sad lives and so much time on their hands.
Man this has been lived without twitter with nobody batting an eye and Red Tops used to wrap up Fish and Chips.
Maybe All Pros should leave Twitter and Master ‘Nice’.
I’m sure the World will be a much more of a Fun and a ‘Better’ Place!

3rd October 2019 at 1:45 am #49156AnonymousGuys, I haven’t read the article and I’m only here to give my opinion on the matter in general. To be clear, I’m staunchly against racial discrimination but I’m honestly disillusioned with how society has attained this convoluted idea of what racism actually is.
There are too many situations now where I will say an issue of racial sensitivity than actual racism and this is one such situation.
We need to take a step back from the fear and judgmental side of society and get back on track with regards to cutting out actual racism.
As a generally liberal person politically, I’m so fed up of idiots ruining my beliefs for me, if that makes sense to you lads…

4th October 2019 at 10:23 pm #49309Came across today out of the Daily Star, Lineker and something he mention about the Haka and ‘you know it’, the Race Card.
It’s getting ridiculously funny and at the same time absurd.
Why is never a White Person ever protected given that it’s them in the minority now in this country? In any walk of life, “John Smith” is more guilty than somebody needing to be defended.
This isn’t the 80s or 90s at all, It’s all pathetic nonsense, online, and people use this as a vehicle and a Hot Water Bottle to be ‘offended’ at any given opportunity.

5th October 2019 at 1:57 am #49310AnonymousThis isn’t the first time that John Barnes has stood up for people in this situation but the fact remains… do we need to hear a black man say the words “thats not racist” before we make up our minds?
There is racism and then there is counter-racism. There are masculine views and there are feminist views. There are always extreme opinions and counter opinions but what we really have to take on board, instead of filling our heads with constant balancing acts is that BIAS is the fundamental problem. You can’t beat bias, with bias.
we need to understand that we can not be without bias, no matter how hard we try. Bias represents purpose and to go against it is to push in another direction, creating new bias. We just need to ease off a bit and accept. I know that if/when I get old, I’ll be a little bit sad about this because in my time on this planet, I know that as we’ve developed technologically, we’ve not developed socially. I say this as someone who is kinda obsessed with tech. There must be so many horrified people out there.

5th October 2019 at 11:17 am #49314Another example of PC gone mad. It wonβt be long before wishing someone Good Morning will be considered racist. Itβs only a matter of time before some idiot takes offence at βWhite Christmasβ

5th October 2019 at 1:06 pm #49319AnonymousYa, I was kinda drunk when I wrote that so I got a bit lost haha but I still meant what I said about bias. What I didnt flesh out more was that we shouldn’t need a black person to stand up and say “hang on lads, thats actually not racism” before we re-adjust or position on it.
We’ve got to think critically about things instead of condemning people in an emotional response.
Oracle, you’re right. This PC crap is nuts. I say this as a generally liberal person politically… but these oversensitive virtue signalling tossers are harmful to society. They think they are the cure but they are clueless, whinny babies.

5th October 2019 at 1:29 pm #49331Mak, it made sense though mate and it’s true.
I think I was a bit lost with mine lol π
That thing about Christmas is true as I actually called in on a BBC Phone In as people are now offended about Christmas Deco and the words “Happy Christmas” as some that don’t celebrate don’t feel as though they are integrated.
It’s crazy, but I remember ringing in that on and being live on air and actually losing my rag!

5th October 2019 at 5:33 pm #49444Sean, Makaveli. This virtual signalling can only do the cause they claim to support damage. We all know there are genuine issues regarding racism but PC and faux outrages does not help. Prince Harry Hewitt suing every newspaper going because his 3rd rate actress wife tells him to can only end in tears.

8th October 2019 at 4:55 pm #49789AnonymousWhat an absolute shambles. I feel for Silva here. It was banter amongst 2 friends and Mendy obviously was not offended. It just comes across like people are offended for the sake of it and people are offended on things that do not even concern them. What a society we live in, this is why I avoid social media. It is toxic as they come.
