Brian, I think test cricket has moved on significantly since England days of being absolute toss… the game has professionalised beyond recognition, it’s played at a higher tempo and technique and tactics have developed. Test cricket is cricket is and always be the measure of a player. And given the levels of depression of players, having fans packed into the grounds is better than one man and his dog on a boundary.
Think cricket is in a far better place than it was 30 years ago on tele and with empty stadiums.

23rd October 2020 at 4:46 pm #168916442…we have to respectfully disagree on this I think. I have better memories of watching and listening to test matches 30yr plus ago than watching it now, which lacks technique and tactical nous. the game is geared to the one day game now and even variations of that. Grounds were full for most test matches as i recall, maybe not for the full 5 days but depending on how the game was going as well. Great memories of some outstanding players though

23rd October 2020 at 4:56 pm #168918Test matches have always been a big draw for crowds, but 5 day games at county level are the origin of socially distanced fans. ODIs and T20s have saved the game at that level….Pagan

25th October 2020 at 1:19 pm #169105Characters and Personalities were different 30 years ago. Plus individual brilliance and ability. Folk also live a different lifestyle and work un-sociable hours over 7 days, so in some ways, the 20-20 is a more suited format in bringing out quality and entertainment.
You have be engaged but have time to also follow over the course of 5 days and plus a lot of the time, there would be issues with the weather which would disrupt play.
Still miss the great contests that were played over the course of 2/3 decades.

25th October 2020 at 3:17 pm #169124Nike….nothing comes close to a good 5 day test match. I can watch a good standard of cricket with my local cricket team, cannot be bothered with 20/20. That is not cricket in my view.True, social living as changed and characters have changed but again in my view the days of Bradman, Hutton Bedser Statham Truman and more would wallop any of the current teams. They were all gifted but gritty professionals who took the knocks and got on with it It is not a question of enjoying nostalgia but having witnessed the differences in the game..Then again..I could be wrong…..

25th October 2020 at 3:39 pm #169131Brian, not at all. I share those sentiments. Ben Stokes; Jimmy Anderson; Will there be any new Special Cricketers unearthed from future generations?
I’m not filled with confidence. I don’t know from that point of view whether the sport will be as appealing.

25th October 2020 at 4:03 pm #169132Unfortunately cricket needs T20 to survive, back in the good old days players played cricket in the summer and then had to get a proper job in the winter. There’s no money to be made from the 5 day game, so in order to be able to fully employ the players throughout the year then they need to make money.
The spin off has obviously been the T20 franchise’s, where the top players in the world are able to follow the summer round the globe and are handsomely rewarded doing so…Pagan

26th October 2020 at 7:58 pm #169173Pagan…agree with what you say…but it is a sad state of affairs for the game I love and played. The days I refer to have long gone and will not return. I am just pleased to have watched some real cricket played by masters of the bat and ball

26th October 2020 at 8:04 pm #169174Brian, the game has had to evolve for the “right now” generation, and to be honest it can be really entertaining and a good evening out.
Similar things were said about European Football in 1955 when Chelsea were stopped from entering the European Cup as it wouldn’t catch on…..Pagan

27th October 2020 at 10:45 am #169179baseball by another name!!!! Have no interest in this format and all games will not be that entertaining but I accept changes had to be made but it comes with a high expense for me.Just do not like the format for a Professional game
