I’ve read it on sky and they have called him A world class player nine.
Agree with the rest of what you say but maguire was happening before Bailly got injured and Bailly is a very good player but he’s not performed well at utd and injuries haven’t helped.

3rd August 2019 at 12:23 pm #44305Who called him world class though Sean? They have tons of pundits. One calling him world class can hardly be used as a generic complaint against the English media. A lot don’t think he is, so I’m not really sure what point you’re making.
Mikus, I completely disagree. Desperation and short termism would have been signing 30 year old Toby from Spurs as well as snapping Bale up. The fact we’ve signed a young Welsh winger from Swansea and a CB we’ve pursued for over a year shows much smarter long term thinking than what we’ve been used to at Utd with the likes of Zlatan, Matic, Falcao etc.
I agree though with your first sentence. To Utd, he’s worth 80mil. Allison wasn’t worth what Liverpool paid for him IMO. What keeper is? But to Liverpool he was worth that.

3rd August 2019 at 1:05 pm #44309Actually, I thought Zlatan was one of your better signings in recent years. And he lifted the team as a whole because he still had a lot of top draw quality. And that’s my point. You bring in top quality (even in its twilight) and it lifts everything and draws both fans and players in.

3rd August 2019 at 1:08 pm #44310Sean, never read or heard that mate. I don’t think even the United fans think Maguire is World Class. He’s clearly not. He might be England’s best Centre Back though and playing at United he might improve time will tell.
World Class is to easily bandied about imo there’s less than a handful of players that justify that description in world football.

3rd August 2019 at 1:20 pm #44311But Mikus, in your previous post you mention specifically long term planning and follow that by a post praising the signing of a mid 30s superstar on superstar wages. Out of interest, who do you think would have suited Utd better and falls into your top quality criteria?

3rd August 2019 at 2:27 pm #44312But Zlatan did somewhat put you back on the map and drew people in again which I think did help the long term.
To answer your question, who else is out there with the proven record (assuming the scouts haven’t missed anyone) is that Maguire, in theory, is the right player at the right time for Man Utd but his acquisition and cost is telling of Man Utd’s predicament. And more crucially – will the benefits he brings be counteracted by Man Utd’s deeper mentality problems? This is still largely the same Man Utd side that ended last season so woefully. Maguire is a very good solid defender who will improve you. No question about that. But does he have the presence and mentality to really lift you the way Zlatan briefly did? At that price he has to.

3rd August 2019 at 3:04 pm #44313Fair enough Mikus. It seems most are in agreement that he’s the right player ut that the price is excessive. Again, it’s worth pointing out how everyone reacted when Liverpool were the only side willing to pay the 75mil Southampton wanted for VVD. City balked at that price too, just as with Maguire. Everyone thought Liverpool were mental for paying that at the time.
Maguire and VVD both had a similar standing in the game at the time of their moves. Clearly VVD is the better defender now but at the time of their moves, their status in the game was very similar. VVD had a handful of International caps.

3rd August 2019 at 8:44 pm #44336Mav, good point mate.
I’m sure I must have made a point of this before, but the valuation on Footballers these days mirrors what we see in Property Prices, ha.
At best, the Guy’s probably worth his salt at 750,000 to 1 Million.
My figures are fudged as you can see to the late 80s lol, hahaha 😛

3rd August 2019 at 10:33 pm #44337Mav, Adam Webster is a very good Centre Back one of the best in the Championship last season and Bristol City will miss him but for them £22m is a lot of money.

4th August 2019 at 7:44 am #44343Arsenal seemingly fail with a two year loan bid for Juve’s Rugani. Barca’s loan fee is allegedly £23m for Coutinho plus his wages?
