Man Utd still spending big each season. Gross spending since Fergie left:
13/14: £70 million
14/15: £174 million
15/16: £140 million
16/17: £166 million
17/18: £179 million
18/19: £75 million
19/20: £145 million (so far)I’d argue Man Utd’s big resources as as much of a weakness as they are a strength. Just because you have the money doesn’t mean you need to always spend it. Yet Man Utd keep spending big because they constantly feel they need to “do something”. As Adlab has said above, City, the current back to back champions who also need a CB again decided to let a target pass them by to their local rivals. Man Utd need to be less hasty. They constantly seem to be planning for just one season ahead.

2nd August 2019 at 8:29 pm #44279Oh agree Mikus. Utd wasted tons recently. Sorry to say but our spending reminds me very much of Liverpool’s during Fergie’s reign. Lots of money on poorly thought out players. On this occasion, Utd couldn’t afford to not get him though. There was nobody else around who was available and proven in the PL.
Utd have spent tons of money but are very rarely the biggest spenders for the season. Once over the last 10 years and I think only 4 times since the league began

2nd August 2019 at 8:55 pm #44280We’ve offered and or have renewed contracts, which in the long run is a plus, healthy to ‘retain’ good colleagues.
However, that naturally comes with a Price. FSG are FSG in spite of whatever ‘facet’ is projected. We have to factor in project expenditure for these ‘renewed’ or ‘re-furbished’ Contracts.
We need to remember, Rodgers himself was risked with shed loads at the time, and Klopp’s have to bear the brunt of that Timeline.
Comparing to other clubs has no relevance at all, albeit that concept of Liverpool not standing still and avoiding that horrible ‘regress’ historically after a ‘NEAR MISS’ once again to the League Championship.

2nd August 2019 at 9:53 pm #44281Are sky really referring to maguire as world class?
That’s silly. Give the lad a chance. He had a very good World Cup but didn’t exactly come againest top top countries or centre forwards
He’s never play in the champions league
Solid defender. Much better on the ball then people give him credit. Brilliant in the air but all the fuss is because he’s English. I don’t get the hype but maybe I’m wrong

2nd August 2019 at 10:14 pm #44284I think he’s the best we could have got Sean but I’d stop short of using the term world class, which is very much over used these days anyway. It means different things to different people I guess. I wouldn’t label him as such.
I heard someone say he’s the only dead-cert pick in the England defence right now and I completely agree with that. Stones has gone backwards. Walker, TAA and Wan Bissaka fighting it out for RB. LB probably belongs to Chilwell but not a dead cert. So considering we supposedly wanted the best of British, we’ve done as good as we could have hoped.

2nd August 2019 at 11:25 pm #44286United needed a Centre Back Leicester were reluctant sellers hence the silly price. Who else was there available for United to buy?

3rd August 2019 at 6:43 am #44289I don’t know why United have gone for Maguire when they could have gotten a better younger and cheaper centre half, not English maybe but still would make more sense. Maguire himself is a decent acquisition but never for that kind of money.

3rd August 2019 at 8:39 am #44293Still expecting Seseeseesseneennggoingg and De La Soul to show up at the Lane, fully expecting both Toby and Danny-boy to stay, and 50/50 on the Wee Erik out/Nandos apples for apples deal, both linked to each other I think (although three different clubs involved).
Do you remember those nights when you wake up and remember buying something really stupid online the night before because you had a few drinks and thought it was a good idea at the time? I wonder if Wee Ole feels like that this morning when he remembers paying 85 million for Slaphead!!

3rd August 2019 at 8:52 am #44294Nine, that’s the million dollar question that nobody seems to have an answer to. The football hipsters will name some young centre back playing for Rayo Vallecano or someone like that but we’ve been burnt so many times from supposed future superstars from lesser leagues. We passed on Hazard due to the price and opted for Kagawa, the cheaper option. Look what a mistake that was.
I can guarantee if Pep bought him, it would be hailed as “the final piece of the jigsaw”, “a masterstroke” etc.

3rd August 2019 at 9:39 am #44298Ed, I thought the post below from hatters on the United site summed it up nicely.
“If the reports are true then we’ve properly got our pants pulled down for Maguire. The desperation for us to get a CB is clear as day and unfortunately, Premier League clubs just don’t need to sell players anymore.
That being said, it’s a great addition to a position which I see as priority number one at the minute. Finally it appears we actually know what we are doing. Maguire is a massive upgrade on our centre back options and will complement Lindelof perfectly.”

3rd August 2019 at 11:23 am #44301Well I think it is nine. He’s the most expensive defender in world football and the English media tend to go overboard with their own.
It’s a ridiculous amount to pay for someone with no cl football experience. A good World Cup and suddenly now he’s world class. Been build up to be a top top class defender by the media and sky when he’s clearly not at that level yet

3rd August 2019 at 11:37 am #44302I read a comment somewhere that Maguire is not worth £80 millon but that to Man Utd he is worth £80 million. I think that’s about right, but it does epitomise the somewhat increasing desperation of Man Utd in recent seasons to try to solve all of their problems all at once as opposed to planning for the long term, which is the main point I’ve sought to make in all this. The real question here is whether, in 3 years time, Man Utd will be close to a title or as far away to it as they are now.

3rd August 2019 at 11:45 am #44303Sean, I haven’t seen anyone claim Maguire is World Class in the media or on the forums and certainly not on here.
Maguire is not world class, United have obviously paid too much for him but Leicester didn’t want to sell him,United have now got the player they needed to fill a problem position for them especially with Bailly out for 5 months.
But I hope he has a mare v Chelsea next week!?
