16th July 2019 at 2:13 pm #43478Sky reporting Leicester have yet to receive an acceptable bid for Maguire and if they were to sell Maguire they are unlikely to try and buy a replacement?

17th July 2019 at 1:44 am #43483AnonymousWhat do you lads make of Coutinho’s agents remarks? Sounds like he’s trying or in the process of setting up any kind of path back to Liverpool. When he was asked about a return to the PL, he said that it would be very difficult for him to play for a top side besides Liverpool, because of his affinity to the club. He’s not just ruling out Man Utd there. I mean, ya sure he’s not a typical City player, Chelsea have a ban , Spurs can’t afford him (or won’t spend it)… Ya..
Either way, I guess he’s not keen on PSG but it sounds like it’s his only option if we don’t at least take him on loan. Barca are spending their cash and want Neymar back. Perhaps we’ve got an opportunity to get one over them in the market?
Now, we’ve heard a lot of the good discussion regards Coutinho. it’s definitely not cut and dry, even after you consider a potential “bargain” in the offing. Our midfield is better since he is no longer in it. Now, we didn’t have Fabinho back then. He isn’t known as one yet but he is a world class DM. Before we had Fab, each player had to work their ass off defensively. In this day and age, you can’t have passengers in that regard but it’s definitely a lot easier when you have a top DM like Fab.
Now that’s just a bit of a thought there. Of course there is also the fact that Coutinho could play in place of Mane/Salah. It would be reassuring to know that we’ve got someone of his quality there if needed and then we could cover the midfield slot he’d be vacating, NP.
So, that aside, what deal would make you lads happy? I think 2 year loan to buy for Β£60m. I say 60 cause I know we wont get 50 but no higher. If they don’t like it then good luck to him at PSG.

17th July 2019 at 6:16 am #43484Mak, now don’t get me wrong I think Fabinho is an excellent midfielder but it’s the synergy and cohesion between all 3 midfielders, in combination with their relationship with the full backs that makes the system work. Put Coutinho in there and something would have to give, be it the full backs hold back more, play a deeper line or we just except that we will concede more chances/goals.
I put this on TT that I think some people reflect back on Coutinho’s time at Anfield focusing only on the positives. In the front 3 he was good, but not brilliant like Mane is, so to me that’s a non-starter for a discussion. In the middle 3 he was pretty poor to be honest, certainly no what a Klopp midfielder is expected to do. I think most people remember him picking the ball up on the left, taking it past a player onto his right and curling it into the corner. But they forget the times he hit it into the crowd, ran into defenders, held onto the ball too long, didn’t track back and most common and unforgivable take a stupidly difficult shot on when others were far better placed.
I’ve not even mentioned the moral issues of having him back after how he behaved, to me the footballing ones are strong enough not to have him.
He’s a good player, but certainly not elite, and he would still command an elite fee, salary and playing status. Most importantly he would compromise our style. Let him go to PSG, he’ll fit in well there.

17th July 2019 at 8:11 am #43487Little bit worried about that one myself..
Young Walker hasn’t quite kicked on, Weirdy Beardy, the name says it all, and the jury is still out on Juan The Forth as a RB… either Eric is going back to RB, or we’ve got somebody lined up…
Of course, Eric at RCB in a back 3 (still think Poncho is seriously considering a 3-4-3!) with Disco and Moose II would make us pretty hard to break down…

17th July 2019 at 10:11 am #43490Sounding like Utd and Leicester still some way apart in their valuation of Maguire. Interesting to see how this one develops. As far as Leicester are concerned, nobody has met their valuation yet, confirmed by Rodgers last night.

17th July 2019 at 10:36 am #43491Don Waspy… Weirdy Beardy is just scary, can look good in patches (about 3 minutes a patch) and I’ve yet to see him play a full 90 without at least one brain fart, not good for stress levels at all. Probably make a brilliant right-winger to be honest! But no idea about a new RB… I’m thinking we can expect Jaun the Forth to be appearing there a lot more… not my ideal cup of tea…
Danny-boy, scorer of the greatest debut goal in the history of football, is another strange one. During the last third of last season, he was probably our best player (not saying much!). I would like to see him stay to be honest, he had a very dodgy 18 months or so but still a quality player and I can’t see how we would improve in that position. Lots of talk about the Fulham lad, but too raw and too much of gamble to buy him and chuck him in right now. Still buy him but keep Rose for another season too would be my plan!

17th July 2019 at 10:41 am #43492Ed, I suspect Man Utd went down the βadd-onsβ route to spread the cost. Apparently Β£60m + add-ons has failed. Leicester basically saying that wonβt wash with us, we want more upfront now. Expect something more like Β£70m + add-ons will get it done.

17th July 2019 at 11:40 am #43497AnonymousThreeps an excellent post. With a lot of that you’re speaking the the choir (regards remembering only the good). While I have made very similar remarks on TT and been shot down, previously, I still think it’s at least worth discussion. Us Liverpool fans don’t have much to talk about this summer.
The midfield is not all about one man, it’s complicated… I think he’s the keystone. Before Fabinho, we talked endlessly about having a samey samey midfield but he’s come in and allowed them to express themselves a bit more offensively. We can’t just go giving away credit for their play to another player but we can say that he helps afford them more defined roles, or such. One of the first things I noticed about him was how he could track, close down, dispossess AND switch the ball into an offensive play. That was when I realised we had a future world class player.
I’m in no hurry to have someone else lose their place. Gini and Milner are 2 favourites of mine also and Hendo has been the most noticeable improvement from the changes since Fabinho locked down a place.
I look back on Coutinho remembering the good and the bad, of course there will always be sentimentality but as you said, the manner in which he left kinda cuts through that, which helps with gaining objectivity, I feel. In a comparison to Mane, nobody is gonna come out favourably, so do not think I would dream of having him replace him… never gonna happen but quality cover is nice but as I said, he would primarily be in AMC.
For me, the manner of how he left is cancelled out (mostly) by the manner of how he returns. His time at Barca has been a nightmare and a serious wake-up call for him. I never saw him as a Klopp player while he was here but Liverpool has changed a lot in those 18 or so months. Is he now? Who knows but a loan to buy is risk free, as long as we don’t do one of those obligated to buy loan deals.. that would be pointless.
Worst case scenario he doesn’t quite work out and we send him back, so I still would.
