22nd June 2023 at 11:24 am #207482Oh Dear, Man City are using that trick again; now they’re looking to bid for Declan Rice.

22nd June 2023 at 8:35 pm #207489And yet our net spend in the past 5 seasons is only the 8th biggest.
If you are able to look with any objectivity our transfer secret is to sell well. I think this window will be similar._____________________________

22nd June 2023 at 10:58 pm #207491Mikus and Sean, it’s pretty much the same as Liverpool in the 70s and 80s and United in the 90s and 00s. Not only do they have the most money, they also have the ‘pull’ of being the best team around, where players want to join a club that has the best chance of winning trophies.
For the record, I’m not sure about Rice but if the best manager in the world wants him, then who am I to argue?_____________________________

22nd June 2023 at 11:33 pm #207492Lads, with the new META seemingly being to defend in back 4 and attack with back 3, players who can play at elite level in a back 4 position as well as holding mid are pretty desirable.
It doesn’t have to be the full back that steps up in to midfield and in terms of transitioning from attack to defense or vice versa I think having the hybrid player move from centre back to holding mid rather than full back to holding mid could be a more comfortable fit. Rice would be perfect imo. Have ake and stones stay back with another centre back and let Rice move in to midfield with rodri. When they lose the ball he drops in to defensive line to make a back 4?
I think that’s how both pep and arteta could be looking at rice

23rd June 2023 at 12:26 am #207493GJ, it’s true that throughout the ages, teams have had periods of domination. But if you look through the historic tables throughout those ages, you still had a constantly changing mix of teams competing for the league, because for me, it was more of a level playing field in terms of the players because I think, whilst we may argue loyalty has always been somewhat of a myth in football, I do think players historically tended to lean more towards entertaining and enjoying the game vs *obsessing* about winning every trophy every season. I just don’t think players were as obsessed with such things back then. But now we very much live in the social media climate where players have become brands in themselves and it very much is all about winning everything every season and making a name for *yourself*. I think we’ve very much lost the ‘community club’ in that sense.
So it’s not so much that I blame City. They’ve executed their plan to almost perfection. I lament the changing culture of the game to one that is increasingly corporate/business like with not just winning, but for me, is effectively about obliterating your opponents. Reading about Klopp’s time at Dortmund, you can’t help but feel the poignancy of the relatively brief period Dortmund had success, only for Bayern to quickly copy the recipe and immediately buy some of Dortmund’s best players for ‘normal service’ to be resumed.
And this is not limited to football, I think it’s effectively in all walks of life. We lose independent shops/services from our towns and they get replaced with faceless corporations who I think are more obsessed with maximising their expansion than they are with serving the public.

23rd June 2023 at 7:43 am #207495Giblues , no I agree mate. City have the biggest pull. They have the best manager and who wouldnβt want to join them.
Itβs just not competitive anymore. City have won the last 4/5 leagues out of 6? How many fa cups and carling cups ? Miracle how Liverpool competed with them. Itβs a one team league now and itβs going to get boring
Interesting take lucky, looks like city have him in anyway

23rd June 2023 at 10:28 am #207496Good replies Mikus and Sean and I agree entirely.
Believe me, the last thing I want is for us to win everything, every season – that would definitely take away the pleasure of watching football. I’ve witnessed, first hand, CL, PL, FAC and LC wins and those memories will last forever, despite the outcome of the FA charges (it’s actually 115 charges, Cocky).
However, we face a huge crossroad when Pep leaves (probably in two years time), the same as United faced when SAF retired and Liverpool when they abandoned the the ‘Boot Room’ recruitment policy in the late 80s.
Only time will tell._____________________________

23rd June 2023 at 4:00 pm #207498City are losing Gundogan and Silva, I don’t think Kovacic and Rice will improve the side even though they have different roles.

24th June 2023 at 8:44 am #207500I don’t believe we will win much next season, it’s extremely difficult to repeat a treble or even a double, the squad is ageing and there is a bit of depth but not much, its virtually impossible to replace players of the calibre of Silva and Gundangon and even Cancello/Walker. The squad will be weaker next season irrespective of who comes in. While all the other big teams will be stronger if you see all new the players they linked too or already there.

24th June 2023 at 11:26 am #207501Man City’s own benchmark of commendable high standards will be put to the test. The reality was that last season it was and they were in danger of surrendering their title. However, there were 2 turning points: 1 of which was Arsenal’s slump. The other was a reinvention of a playing system by Pep. That fundamentally was the catalyst and instrumental to their unique Treble Triumph.
I dont think any team next season will surpass 80 to 83 points as it will be tight. Can City hold on for a 4 in a row?

24th June 2023 at 11:34 am #207502Wishful thinking, Nil, but I like your optimism. Abu Dhabi will win it by at least 10 points, mid-90’s… maybe one of the following pack might reach the mid-80’s point range, but I very much doubt 3rd place will have more than 75…

25th June 2023 at 10:41 am #207504Some mad stuff going on. Utd should walk away from mount. Heβs not even worth 50m with a year left.
Neves to Saudi Arabia is such a waste. Rumours of Bernardo silva aswell. Fine for kante 32 years old and injury prone but not 26,27 year olds
Looks like rice is set for city. Another 100m signing. All quiet elsewhere

25th June 2023 at 10:54 am #207505I don’t know why United want Mount, he has his good runs but with very little creativity and longer bad runs. Imo his not worth more than 40m. When I first heard of him while on loan and all I mistakenly believed he was a special talent.

25th June 2023 at 11:20 am #207506Morning Chucks, hope you’re good. I had an interesting memory triggered and something GJ sort of pointed out on this thread. I came across an article from one of the red tops about Dea Gea being the longest current servant at United.
It made me realize how dominant they were. I don’t think Fergie had it in him to rebuild yet another team, but at the same time, they were dominant and it took if anything more of Man City’s entourage of financial muscle and selection of top managers to really shift aside that dominance. Pep’s Tenure has played a huge part in that.
Maybe it will calm down a little and the Treble for example may not be repeated.
From LFC’s point of view, it’s thank goodness the Red of Manchester are sitting on 20 League Titles and not more.
Gives us guys a glimmer of hope π
