Of course Saudi want the World Cup, they also have decided they want to have the “best league” in the World, as that would be one up on the Qatari’s who “only” had the World Cup… for a bunch of homophobic countries, there is hell of a lot of willy-waving going on.
But I very much doubt they’ll be invited into the Champions League… and expanded club world cup, so South America can also join in etc… but not the Champions League.

27th July 2023 at 9:09 pm #207719Lucky, hope all is well mate.
What do you Chelseaβs other buisness will be? I think Chelsea will need to go to close 100m for caideo
I see poch says he needs to let more players go but surely Chelsea are struggling for bodies in midfield. About 10/11 first team players left. Is there still more to go?
Does the squad look weaker to you at the moment or how do you see it?

27th July 2023 at 9:12 pm #207720Why on earth would Uefa let the Saudis join the Champions League? The Champions League is their cash cow. Their USP. Let the Saudis in and there’s no uniqueness to the product that is European football. You say “money talks” but there won’t be much money left if they dilute the Champions League and start letting others get a piece of the pie as there’ll be nothing left for players to stay in Europe for.

28th July 2023 at 8:21 am #207725The Saudi’s won’t joint the uefa CL, they’ll just throw enough money at their own version so all thr top teams join that instead. Voila a new super league is born, but now you look forward to away days in sunny Riyadh too!

28th July 2023 at 8:46 am #207726Has anybody here actually watched an Al-Bundy League game? Or have any intention too?
I just can’t see how it will work in the long run… and even the Saudi’s will get bored throwing money away eventually. It’s just a rinse and repeat version of what China tried to do.

28th July 2023 at 11:40 am #207728I actually think Uefa will respond to this by removing the barrier of multi-club ownership groups competing in the same competitions. That would allow the Saudis (and the rest) to instead just buy ready made established clubs beyond what they’ve done with Newcastle and everyone (bar the “legacy” fans) would be happy. Uefa retain the premium product with the best players, the best competitions and the best fans. The oil states can buy as many toys (clubs) as they want and it will just become a farce. Uefa have already hinted at softening those rules.
If Sportswashing is the end goal, it’s a much slower process to sportswash in their own country which could take years, decades even, to get to a point where the quality is good enough. With that said, the likes of Henderson ditching his morals at the first sign of a big bag of cash, won’t help in terms of slowing that process down.

28th July 2023 at 12:29 pm #207729Well there would normally be no chance that 2 middle east countries get a World Cup within 8 years of each other, 2 in 3 world cups!

28th July 2023 at 1:22 pm #207731Hi Sean, I’m good mate thank you hope you sound too.
It’s all up in the air mate, I could be pessimistic or optimistic but in either case will have no idea how we will be this season. We have definitely lost experience but at the same time I think will be much fitter and more tight knit this season.
We are certainly short in midfield. Wouldn’t stretch to 100m for caicedo but given today’s market and what we spent on Enzo, I understand Brighton holding out for that. If its a no go I wish it was realised early.
I’m always on glass half full side of things anyway and I think with improved team cohesion and with poch having plenty of time to coach due to lack of European football, I think we will be in with good chance of top 4.

28th July 2023 at 3:38 pm #207733Long way to go but I don’t see anybody breaking into last years Top4, Jammy Todgers are a complete mess with their revolving door policy (might finish strongly!), LiVARberoOol have a completely new midfield to incorporate (again, might finish strongly), and my Spuds are just all over the place anyway… none of those three are going to catch Abu Dhabi Sportswashing Campaign or the Goonies, and I would be surprised if any of them could catch YooUtd or Saudi Arabia Sportswashing Campaign…

28th July 2023 at 5:48 pm #207736Ed, be interesting to hear what Henderson has to say. Just admit itβs about money like neves did. Hypocrisy of the highest level. Itβs very controversial. Articles everywhere skating him and rightly so
Still, unbelievable captain for us. Donβt agree with this move at all but he was a proper leader and itβs a huge risk we are taking getting rid of all these midfielders

28th July 2023 at 5:48 pm #207737Banjo, bookies have the top 4 as city, arsenal, Liverpool and utd. Newcastle 5th and Chelsea 6th. I would agree in general with that order of probability.
