13th November 2019 at 11:29 am #52757I was away when this happened but it sounds like handbags…apart from a minute scratch?
If something like this had happened at school BOTH would be in detention!
I am sure this sort of thing happens all the time.
My concern is why did it get to the press. Somebody must have spouted. To me thats worse in this sort of situation._____________________________

If it was a throat grab then there is no excuse. Discipline is everything. But we werent there.
I wouldnt go for Gomez. Hes a big chap.
If as you say it was all Sterling then right. I would have sent him home for both games.
Im sure worse goes on though. There must be loads of similar incidents. If the manager doesnt maintain discipline he is lost.
Do you think it warrants so much coverage?
Silly boy Sterling. Next time he should think first.I wonder if he would have left him out if it was a key match?

13th November 2019 at 2:56 pm #52777Adlab…by all accounts, including Southgate’s, Gomez was the innocent party here. As for keeping it in house, the chances of things like this being kept in house nowadays with social media etc are minimal. I reckon Southgate was just trying to take control of the situation, in case it came out at a later date. As I said in an earlier post though, I do think it’s a little harsh.
And an interesting point, if we’d needed to win to qualify, I bet Sterling would have played!

13th November 2019 at 5:34 pm #52792AnonymousIt was an entirely one sided affair. Sterling assaulted Gomez and there’s no other way about it.

13th November 2019 at 6:29 pm #52799I think Southgate has handled the situation really well, heβs not tried to cover it up, heβs punished the aggressor, heβs managed any conflict, resolved the incident, kept them together out of the public and pressβ grasp so no resentment builds up, and hopefully theyβll go back to their parent clubs as if nothing happened, for me thatβs good management…..Pagan

13th November 2019 at 6:32 pm #52800More has emerged from this from what the BBC have reported on the back of Southgate leaving him out. Generally, the camp have moved on. From a Manager point of view, Southgate made the right decision.
As a side, if anyone remembers when Rodgers was first at the helm at Liverpool, they showed a series some years back on TV called Being Liverpool in which one clip is shown Rodgers warned a very young Sterling for answering him back during training.
The right message needs to be sent from the start that no player is going to be bigger than the Team, especially one that’s representing the nation.

13th November 2019 at 7:00 pm #52803I agree with you on this. Discipline is vital. Look at the most successful manager, SAF. He insisted on total discipline. Break that, whoever you are, even Roy Keane, Japp Stam and out you go.
I understand from those I know, Pep demands absolute discipline. I guess so does Klopp. Its the same in any successful workplace.
Ive no arguements with this given what Ive read.

13th November 2019 at 7:24 pm #52804Adlab, Perfect on the point of Discipline and I suspect this the is precedent wanting to be set by The Manager.
From a Workplace POV, club rivalries have to be left at home and the focus has to be on England.
From a Cultural POV, I think we live a different time to say 1990 where the Guys whichever Club they played would just easily blend well together over a few Beers at the Bar or a Restaurant Wine and Dine.

13th November 2019 at 8:29 pm #52814I hear the major powers are having a summit conference about this incident. Russia has deployed a task force in the North sea. The USA have three carriers at sea and special forces ready, we, of course will have Captain Mannering and the Home Guard on full alert. It should have been kept “in house” end of story. I do not know what is worse the media frenzy or people trying to escalate the incident into something it is not. Sterling was wrong, Sterling apologised, Sterling given punishment …what else is there to say??
