Steve, if you honestly believe that Utd would spend what they spend on scouting and then resort to “City want Fred according to the Daily Express, so let’s go for him” then I’ve lost what little faith I had left in football fans’logic! ?.

The same was said of Jorginho’s live to Chelsea but it’s just a ridiculous theory to suggest these players were signed simply because someone else was linked to them. Why have a scouting budget at all? Just scour the BBC gossip page on deadline day and you’re sorted right?!

Ed how can you talk about united and scouting with a straight face?!!! what the hell have any scouts for any manager done for a very long time? what gems have been unearthed? what established pros have been brought in and fired?

from what i hear form most united fans your so called scouting is a joke so in all honesty it wouldnt surprise me!

they want him? then he is good enough for us to, lets nip in and stop them strengthening and be better opurselves with no real plan

of course i am most likely wrong and it is fan logic but i do think it does happen with certina players and especially youth/loan players where the potential cost and loss is less….especially for clubs that make £700m profit a y ear when they are tosh!! ;P

Firstly on Fred if the United scouting network is rubbish so is City’s because they both wanted him at the time.

£50m players don’t get signed to prevent someone else signing them every Club has Scouts watching every player of any repute Fred chose United for whatever reason and it hasn’t worked out that happens at all Clubs including your own and City had a lucky escape.

Lukaku’s signing had absolutely nothing to do with Mourinho he was signed on the recommendation of Abramovich’s personal scout Piet de Visser in 2011 when Mourinho had been left by then 4 years and AVB the recently appointed Manager at the time was moved to say at the time of the signing “it’s got nothing to do with me”.

Any blame for Chelsea’s current transfer ban probably lays with Michael Emenalo who was Sporting Director and that might explain his sudden departure from Chelsea.

Ironically despite Chelsea being as active as they have been in recruiting young talent from around the world it’s the local lads that have been at the Club from the age of 6/8 that are coming to the fore.

….in respect of Jorginho City wanted him and he was all set to sign until Sarri was appointed Chelsea Manager it was Sarri who wanted Jorginho to build his intended team around him and Sarri convinced Jorginho to come to Chelsea.

Last season it looked like City had had another lucky escape not so much this season though.

im not saying they bought a £50m player JUST to stop city, im saying htere were no united rumours until the city ones started, same for sanchez and then they just stumped up more to get them, im sure someone thought they would work out but i still think NEITHER are what united wanted or needed at the time they were bought, considering Fred has barely played and played tosh when he has might back it up ;P

anyway its a “perspective” that opposing fans can and do have with a few clubs and various times and i stand by my thoughts and am happy to be rinsed for them 🙂

Steve, no our scouting have been crap. But as Nine says, so have City’s seeing as they too wanted Sanchez, Fred etc. That you think Utd have got enough money to buy a player to stop another club signing them is just not logical, considering how badly we need players. The logic behind this argument is seemingly that people honestly think that only 1 or 2 clubs are watching players at the same time and fans seemingly think that if the gossip column says a club is watching him, nobody else will be. Scouting networks across Europe will all have dossiers on the same players and will be watching the players at the same time.

Is it possible that Utd and City were both watching Fred. Definitely. Along with a ton of others (the fact he’s turned out crap is beside the point). Is it also possible that Utd got wind of other teams upping their interest and it pushes them into action? Of course. But, to suggest Utd buy a player to stop another club getting him or just because another club want him is, frankly, laughable.

i jest and i know its right what you say but the perception of a few transfers can certainly be looked at in such a way….especially the loan systme hoovering up as much young talent as possible with no intention of every playing them or trying….

besides i didnt say JUST to stop them, it was a “we need a player, they want them, 2 birds one stone” kinda thing….

anyway im quite rightly on a hiding to nothing so lets swiftly move on 🙂

Fair enough Steve! Don’t get me wrong, though. It’s a valid point. In many ways, I’d want my club to be pushed into action if they’re watching a player and they get wind a rival club is in for him. I mean, let’s say Utd were watching Mbappe and they got wind of City starting to up their interest. It’d be wise then to try to close the deal to ensure they don’t regret it. Similarly, even if Utd hadn’t been watching Mbappe as they didn’t think he was available, then they got wind City/Liberools were watching him and thus he’s more available then they’d probably realised, I’d bloody hope they’d spring into action. This is simply good business sense (again the players here turned out to be crap but kind of beside the point).

It’s this notion of buying players to spite other teams that I just don’t buy.
