Mikus, here’s the 2016/2017 shirt sales by Club. Which is the latest one I can find.
Figures for the top 10 best selling football shirts in terms of clubs have been revealed and the study shows that Manchester United are the top dogs when it comes to shirt sales.
La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are still near the top, while there’s more Premier League presence from Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.
As per figures seen in a number of tabloids, here are the top 10 worldwide best selling football shirts in full:
10. AC Milan
At the very bottom of the top 10 is AC Milan, who can very much be considered a fallen giant following their slump over the past few years. In the past three seasons they have finished in 8th, 10th and 7th in Serie A and the fact their squad is no longer packed with global superstars has had a huge detriment on the amount of shirts they are selling. It currently stands at 650,000.9. Paris Saint-Germain
Next up is PSG. Since the influx of money from Qatar Sports Investments and the arrival of several big-name players, PSG have been on an upwards spiral and they have won Ligue One four times on the trot. In terms of their number of shorts sold, they have flogged 685,000.8. Liverpool
They haven’t been recognised in football’s elite for a number of years now but Liverpool are still in the top 10 as far as shirts are concerned. They are believed to have sold 705,000 worldwide. Their star man Philippe Coutinho is in the top eight for worldwide shirt sales.7. Juventus
Juventus have been the dominant force in Italy for the past five seasons – a period in which they have won the Serie A title every year. Unsurprisingly, they are the leading club in Italy for shirt sales with 850,000.6. Arsenal
Arsenal’s 2016/17 shirt sales numbers are past the one million park, currently standing at 1.225 million – which is also the same number of views Arsenal Fan TV get on meltdown videos after another dismal defeat. In Mesut Ozil, Arsenal have the player with the fifth highest shirt sales worldwide.5. Bayern Munich
The German giants have sold 1.5 million shirts this season in total, cementing their place as the biggest club in Germany.4. Chelsea
Premier League leaders Chelsea are fourth in the football shirt worldwide sales rankings, with 1.65 million shirts sold. Roman Abramovich will like those numbers a lot.3. FC Barcelona
Just short of 2 million shirt sales, Barcelona’s figures currently stand on 1.98m. Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez = goals and shirt sales. Lionel Messi is the top footballer in the world for shirt sales, with his compatriot Neymar five places behind in sixth.2. Real Madrid
Real Madrid absolutely love shirt sales. The base the majority of their signings on how many shirts they will sell, with the majority of their ‘Galactico’ signings orientated around how marketable the player was. Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and co. are doing well in the shirt sales department, with the Champions League and Club World Cup winners selling 2.29m worldwide.1. Manchester United
Manchester United’s summer business is proving fruitful in terms of shirt sales as the Red Devils are at the cream of the crop. They sold 2,850,000 in the last year and clearly the big-money signing of Paul Pogba and the shrewd capture of Zlatan Ibrahimovic is paying dividends off the pitch, even if the duo have yet to propel United to the top four as of yet. Pogba is in third in the shirt selling department, while Ibrahimovic slightly behind him in fourth._____________________________

19th January 2019 at 10:23 am #31593What’s happened is Chelsea started to win leagues so got more fans globally. You see a lot of people now in Ireland with city and Chelsea shirts while 15 years ago it was either Liverpool or utd over here.
Liverpool need to start winning trophies again and I’m not suprised were we are in the list but we have a massive fan base around the world as our visits to Australia, Thailand , states in recent years shows

19th January 2019 at 12:34 pm #31597Sean, was just thinking the same thing, it just shows, commercially speaking, how vital league titles are to Liverpool. Whilst it’s a very difficult thing to do to measure the total global fan base of each club, the figures above at least indicate the present and future trends and thus we are struggling to add to our fan base from the younger audiences. This is why Man Utd are so big because they were successful for such a long period they both held on to their base and constantly added to it with the younger audiences and probably peaked and reached their maximum attainable fan base. One estimate is that their global fan base is 700 million which would be a tenth of the world population which is incredible if true.

19th January 2019 at 1:08 pm #31600Brian, would I right in saying it’s a relatively new thing to make money from shirt sales? In decades gone by was there even such a thing as the club shop??

19th January 2019 at 1:33 pm #31602Mikus, 700 million fans worldwide and only 705,000 shirts sold? Blooming tight lot you Liverpool fans.?
Don’t forget these figures don’t include knock off shirts which would be probably be significant in Africa and Asia.

19th January 2019 at 1:38 pm #31603Nine, the 700 million estimate is the global fan base figure for Man Utd, not us, but I take the point about the black market.

19th January 2019 at 2:02 pm #31605Mikus, oops!?
Plenty of Liverpool fans worldwide though mate I’ve bumped into them in Hong Kong and the States. And in Spain there are plenty of hookey Liverpool shirts on sale both in the markets and in the shops.
Of course the big thing now is that fans don’t have to go to the ground to go in the Club shop all the major Club’s have great Club shops on the internet.
Chelsea like everyone else get lots of tourist fans particularly because of our location and at home games many of them literally buy the Club shop and then wear it all into the Stadium.

19th January 2019 at 3:03 pm #31618Ive never bought a club shirt in 60 years of watching.
What is interesting is that whatever figures you believe shirt sales indicate some support. What I found interesting was last summer we cruised the Greek islands and on Mykonos and Santorini I noted with pride and pleasure local kids wearing City shirts. 10 years ago no chance. It takes time, expense and continued success for glory hunters to attach themselves.

19th January 2019 at 5:12 pm #31655Adlab, in my naievity I took a bunch of my key dealers and their wives out there a few years ago and knew nothing about Mykonos.
I realised when we got to the departure lounge to board the plane though. Each to their own no problems for me it’s a lovely Island as is Crete.

19th January 2019 at 6:18 pm #31668Sean good point.
Always felt before their dominance and titles plus additional trophies United were deemed as a Big Club. Though your right, winning trophies in the here and now raises your profile.
The club put themselves in good stead to attract different geographical area of football fans.

20th January 2019 at 10:36 am #31718Anonymous3 x 6 + 9 , I wish I could have seen your face mate, I was a Greek Island hopper for many years and party mad Mykonos was 50% gay and 50% straight all mixing to create an outrageous atmosphere. I didn’t get round to Paradise or Super Paradise beaches though !!!
On the big club issue , Spurs are doing their best to build (honestly) a big club structure with the new WHL and the amazing training ground/facilities as well as top four finishes. At the moment I would give them 7/10 as we never compete for the “Top ” players when they are available something the rest of the top 6 do.
We also need silverware of any kind as we have tons of Brasso in the cleaning cupboard but nothing to polish.
I really fear for Spurs , they have a lot of quality players who richer teams are eyeing .We also have Eriksen and Toby holding out and rightly so for new mega contracts in line with Harry Kane, they are world class and should be paid accordingly. Unless Levy breaks a habit of a lifetime and goes big in the transfer market showing the current players his intent, we may end up losing the nucleus of this team . Spurs have got to get CL football for next season in the new ground, anything less would for their long suffering ,fed up with Wembley supporters be a very bitter pill to swallow.
Levy has this one chance to get it right ………….._____________________________

20th January 2019 at 12:11 pm #31727Being sponsored by beer companies hindered Liverpool shirt sales for years – so hooky ones were more popular in many countries and not just for price. Glad it’s changed.
Back to fans – the palace fans at Anfield yesterday were brilliant and really did push their team onwards like a twelfth man. Drummers as well!!

20th January 2019 at 2:22 pm #31746That drummer did my head in yesterday, Beni, but you’re right, the Palace fans were pretty good. What did you think of Zaha yesterday? I was really impressed, not only with him, but with Palace as a whole. Best side Hodgson has ever managed at Anfield. ..lol!

I don’t think Iv’e seen an injury list like our current one.
A win would be good but it’s going to be a struggle._____________________________

20th January 2019 at 3:54 pm #31752HH, I thought Zaha was typically him. Interested when he has the ball but lazy and strolling when he didn’t. It’s why I think he is only suited to being the best player in an average to good team. The difference in workrate between him and our front three sums up whyhe is just good and not great
