18th January 2019 at 3:44 pm #31546AnonymousIt’s clearly about both for FSG. You can tell the people who are ONLY in something from the money and it often goes hand in hand with failure.

18th January 2019 at 6:06 pm #31559Just think what Liverpool might be worth to FSG once they finally start winning some trophies.?

18th January 2019 at 6:55 pm #31564What is a big club? Of course it depends on your point of view. I believe it depends on:
– history
– trophys won in recent seasons
– genuine local and international support
– finance and wealth of ownership
– attractivness of football
– where top players want to play
– club infrastructure
– depth of squad
– academy players
– international player representation
– ease of sponsorshipTo me,in England
1 Utd
2 Liverpool
Both due to a glittering history
Then come Arsenal, City and ChelseaI dont think Spurs are there yet.

18th January 2019 at 7:38 pm #31565Adlab,
mate, you’ve put together some sort of a ‘check list’, but without even sifting though that off the top of my head I’d say Leeds United, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest would be considered as a Big Club.
Tottenham too are a Big Club.
It just seems to me on the evidence of this and another topic I picked up on, by perception through recent fan experience, Comparison to European Clubs is factored in as some sort of a Barometer and I see Champions League involvement and how many times in winning it.

18th January 2019 at 7:45 pm #31566Are City and Chelsea big clubs? Absolutely…
Pity they’ll always have that asterisk next to their names about how they got to be a big club, not that their fans would care (and neither would I if I was in their shoes to be honest!)

18th January 2019 at 8:15 pm #31570West Ham United are a Big Club.
Teams experiencing recent height of success and are underpinned by an Investor I have to say doesn’t place them on any higher Pedestal.
That ‘theory’ might be pulled off with Leyton Orient and Brisbane Road, and the now AFC Wimbledon and the then Plough Lane, if that was to ever be dug up and revamped completely! 😀

18th January 2019 at 8:17 pm #31571Does anybody really care about big club, little club? Just go and watch a game of football with your team and enjoy it and stop putting tags on things

18th January 2019 at 8:18 pm #31572Newbalance.
I thought about Leeds, Forest etc but I feel that one significant component is how the club performs in the modern era which means the EPL. Forest have a history. The last time they won the league was 77/78. 41 years ago. Newcastle very limited trophies. Leeds of course better but most success in the 60s and70s. But yes they were and will be a big club.
In the context of generalities there are only two really big clubs Utd and Liverpool. Others like City and Chelsea are closing in but a long way to go. A good team is transitory and doesnt on its own make a big club. For example City imo will need to keep this up for at least five more years to really be a big club even if they are one of the top half dozen teams in Europe.I think one could debate this forever and never agree. Just like Brexit!

I’m honestly finding Adlab’s Viewpoint of interest and to some extent, in agreement.

18th January 2019 at 8:36 pm #31575Adlab, in essence, summed up well mate.
For what it’s worth, without all your wealth and recent success, I regard Manchester City as a Big Club.
My Bug Bear is changing Grounds/Locations as Maine Road I felt was always your Identity.
I get though mate, to get somewhere in reality in life, you have to adapt and move with the times.
Pleasure mate as always.

18th January 2019 at 8:44 pm #31576Brian, @ 8:17, that’s all I want in essence.
6 years though without any Silverware whilst competitors around us winning in proceedings has been difficult to muster for a long time. Rival teams too to add to the Wedge.
I’m the kind of Football Supporter that will Welcome any trophy and will NEVER look down my nose. We as Liverpool are trying to overcome recent setbacks of being losing Finalists.
Here’s Hoping.

18th January 2019 at 9:01 pm #31577If you are going to measure how big a club is for me it has to primarily be based on the size of their global fan base. A very crude measure/guide one might say but current Twitter followers of the top 6:
Man Utd: 18.7 million
Arsenal: 14 million
Chelsea: 12.4 million
Liverpool: 10.9 million
Man City: 6.6 million
Spurs: 3.2 millionFacebook likes:
Man Utd: 73 million
Chelsea: 47 million
Arsenal: 37 million
Man City: 36 million
Liverpool: 32 million
Spurs: 10 million_____________________________

18th January 2019 at 10:22 pm #31581I’m pretty sure the Sentiment was in humour rather that My Dad is Bigger Than Your Dad.
What does it matter though throughout?
For me in supporting my club: Glory on the Pitch and Happiness.

18th January 2019 at 10:24 pm #31582Nine, from a skysports article (survey published by sporting intelligence) of global shirt sales a few years ago:
Man Utd: 1.75 million
Chelsea: 899,000
Liverpool: 852,000
Arsenal: 835,000
Man City: 342,000
Spurs: 268,000So, it pretty much mirrors the social media following.
